Snap Bridge was telling me I needed to update my firmware and this was very helpful to do it with confidence. Mine was going from C1.12 to 1.13 and LD 2.017 to 2.08 worked just like your video.
My wife bought me a Nikon D3400 for Christmas last year. Your videos have been very helpful. Thank you! I live in Italy currently so there are plenty of photo ops. Thanks again. Ciao
Thanks for the post/feedback and welcome from United States!:) Glad to be of help. Take some photos and post back a link - I suspect you have some great landscapes!:)
Thank you. Will try this since snapbridge doesnt connect to my camera. Pretty straightforward and very good instructions. Your voice is clear and very easy to understand. You should go read the news on tv! :)
Hello. I have said this before, but you make some of the best how to videos on RUclips, Clear and easy to listen to and no annoying music, and well planned. I will check my Nikon D5500 and see if this is some firmware for me!
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) Curious to know if your D5500 is in need of new firmware. I had someone tell me they received a revamped menu on their D3300 (upgrading from old firmware):).
Awesome! With your advice, I decided to buy the D3400 and it came in today. Thank God. I just updated it. From the software section on the page you linked to I downloaded the NEF Codec which now lets me preview the raw files in my Windows photo viewer. Thanks a lot for all your help. Your content is really helpful. I appreciate it all. :)
I bought this camera a few weeks ago and started subscribing to your channel. Your tutorial on the D3400 firmware upgrade was simple to follow and very informative. Thank you
Good evening. I decided not to go with the 3400 but I just bought the 7200. Looking forward for better weather to see your new tutorials as well as what I have learnt this year. Thanks for all your help
I was having problems updating until I viewed your tutorial. You made it clear that the opened BIN files were copied separately onto the SDX card. I did both the C:Ver.1.13 and Ver.2.017 updates easily. Excellent - Thank you.
I updated firmware in the past but in the end it's always good to have a "make sure I don't brick" instructions. I never bricked a device when I seen other people do successful firmware upgrades and I follow along. but I have seen others brick their devices by doing it so... so wrong. A word of warning for all devices, make sure they are either plugged in, or a fully charged and healthy battery is used for the firmware upgrades because this is the number 1 reason why devices are bricked.
Thank you for this video. Just wanted to drop in and say there is a January 2020 update for distortion control for the D3400 v2.018. **MUST REMOVE LENS** before updating distortion control per Nikon's d/l site.
BRILLIANT! I got this camera when it first came out and it's like an extension of my arm so when it stoped syncing with my phone I could've sworn I'd updated it once but definitely not!! Thank you so much!!
Your videos have been very helpful with my understanding of the functions and abilities of my new D3400 and have given me the confidence to put it to work. Thanks so much.
Big thumbs up from me. You answered all my questions on how to do a firmware upgrade. Nikon should be paying you for this, or at least giving you some free stuff. Many thanks.
. I followed instructions for BACK FOCUS, Now the camera focuses when I push the AEL button, BUT, when I push the shutter button half way down the red focus button still lights up, AND the green focus circle appears as it now does when I push the AEL button.... why does this happen?....I thought that focus button would no longer work because it works now when I push the AEL button....What did I do wrong?????? ALSO I checked the firmware and it is updated but there is no LF 1:00 listed, why?....I am using a sigma 18-35mm f1.8 lens...
Great video. Note that it is vital to fully charge the camera battery before updating the firmware- the camera could be ruined if it lost piwer halfway through the update.
please! say some thing me. I followed your tutorial carefully. but, when I update my camera D3400 firmware, some one switched the power. already the software is damaged. what shall I do? Please show me the method!
unfortunately, if the power is lost for any reason while the firmware is updating, the camera might need to be sent back to the manufacturer for additional help.
Hi I have a d3500 I tried to see if I could update my firmware but there's only an option for software on the website? Is there no update for the firmware for this camera yet?
Wow another great video, I had problems with Snapbridge and its connection to phone via Bluetooth. After this update, issue is now resolved. Thanks! Looking forward to your next video....
Thank goodness I didn't agree to take pic at my brothers wedding coming up Sept 2022~ Took out nikon and took a pic in back yard....when I went to view....there was this black box covering the pic w/ photo info....WELL that took me a while to find the answer in my notes....NOW my question is....after taking the pic....it just hangs there, how do I shorten the length of time to view once you've taken a photo.....I thot this was an easy fix BUT I can not find it and I remembered I got the D3400 based on your liking it.....soooooooo what do I go to in the menu? please help....thanks
Hi, I've recently bought a Nikon D3400 and I was wondering if the SD card has to be empty first or we can keep the photos in? Kinda feel like its a stupid question but I'm really looking forward for an answer that would be really appreciated
Good question:). The card does not have to be empty ... the camera will create a directory on the card to store taken images and leave all other files untouched:).
SnapBridge is finicky but the new firmware helps to some extent. Not certain if you caught my video on SnapBridge but you may want to reconnect to device ( ruclips.net/video/jVRnKhZYFPE/видео.html ).
I have to try multiple times during my SnapBridge video and suspect you may need to do the same:). Unfortunately, Nikon did not do the best with their SnapBridge software in my opinion:).
Not a problem ... compare the firmware on your camera ( ruclips.net/video/yiVxtrOmSUw/видео.html ) to the firmware on the Nikon site ( here is a link directly to the D3500 - downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/products/471/D3500.html ). If you see a difference, you should consider upgrading ... since Nikon is not showing any firmware downloads on their site, you are good:).
SIR i hvnt upadted d FIRMWARE ever...it's still d same d way it was wen I purchased it...so it's 2020 now n d new Updates r C - 1.13 n LD - 2.018...So can I update it directly from d Old version to d LATEST 1...??? Will I face any issues..?? Or how safe it is...??? Plz suggest me...
It's not working for me, there is no update section when I replace the card in the camera, only 'DONE', I have tried this several times. Any suggestions appreciated.I am trying to update from version 1.12 to 1.13
Hi, I have a problem with my camera, it was working fine, it was not used a month ago and today I tried to take pictures with it but it does not work because all of its features are working except for the screen appears black. Did you encounter this problem before? I want you to help me
My camera has the new firmware...But I still can't get Snap Bridge to work, so I can't do time lapse, pretty much making this camera half as functional. Very frustrating.
Just updated to latest firmware, 1.13 and 2.017, had to buy a card reader though, duh! FYI the LD 2.017 firmware says remove the lens before applying the update. Just thought I'd mention that.
Glad to be of help Derrick:). Ahhhh yes, a built-in safety feature. If the camera powers off for whatever reason during a firmware update, your camera could go bad for good.
I purchased a Nikon DF in 2013 and haven't checked whether Nikon has released firmware updates. Do you know if Nikon has released firmwares? If so, I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to access the site and links. Thanks in advance.
You have had wonderful videos to help. I still have had so many frustrations with Snapbridge, bought sd card reader for iPad, and computer just to transfer that way. Hoping the newest update to Snapbridge will help. But most of the time my D3400 still says Bluetooth is turned off and I can't change it. Still get message that says ' this option not available at current settings or in the cameras current state.' Only thing I don't like about the camera!!
Orcagirl1 B Me also I am having the same issue, bluetooth and location data are not available anymore, the same message that you get.. Even after upgrading the firmware, it still doesn't work ?
Unfortunately, Bluetooth in the menu is only an indicator and not a selectable option which can be confusing in my opinion:). I believe you must re-establish connection with the device using the setup process. Once connected, you should see the Bluetooth option enabled. Always been a bit finicky for me but the firmware update has helped to some extent:).
I came here because I was trying to figure out if you can install 3500 firmware on 3400 only to get Snapbridge to have the capability of remote shooting. Do you think that's possible? Unless the upgrade you did solve that issue too?
I would not swap firmware:). Might seems doable considering they are similar models, but the firmware introduces model specific features. For example, the D3400 has a function button and IR sensor not found on the D3500.
Hi sir I love you videos. I need help. My camera suddenly has a stamp on latitude longitude on all my pictures. How can I remove it? Thanks ahead of time !
Thanks for the post/feedback/question:). Which camera do you own? The D3400 does not offer GPS, so I suspect you have a different camera or something else is being stamped on the images:).
Yes, this should be doable ... run through the same process outlined in the video using the older firmware file(s). Nonetheless, it is odd the firmware update would result in darker images.
@@johnkimeden6281 recently, most of my images are overexposed (too bright). i use exposure compensation to adjust down a step or two but this should not be needed. nonetheless, the exposure can fault at times causing resulting images to be under or over exposed:).
Thank you.. just updated the camera and lens firmware on my D5600.. While downloading the files for the lens update from Nikon download center saw a warning Nikon has put up for this installation, as this update controls the distortion related to lenses. Caution: Remove the lens before performing this update.
I did the firmware updates right after I got my new D3400 out of the box. Since you had the "old" firmware and used it for a while, did you notice any considerable change in the camera functions (apart from SnapBridge )? You should also recommend that the battery should be fully charged. Another super helpful video! Thank you and keep them coming!!!
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) Great point regarding full battery as well:). I have not noticed any major differences, however Nikon stated the new firmware was focused on SnapBridge connectivity although I suspect a few other repairs/enhancements were made:).
LF stands for Lens Firmware and I see very little information on it from Nikon:). This is only applicable on certain lenses and I have not seen any updates for it ... perhaps Nikon was forward thinking:).
I did everything that you said thank you by the way and got the bin folder saved to the SD card but when I inserted it back into the camera I did not have the option to update please help. I did it several times still to no avail
The firmware would not hurt but I am curious to know more ... Nikon states 1200 shots on a full battery but keep in mind that is under ideal conditions which I assume is no preview, no live view, etc. Are you using Live View and/or are you spending lots of time with the screen on (previewing images, etc.)?
HI I followed the tutorial on how to update the D3400 firmware so far so good but the camera will not update all i get is the same versions showing and at the bottom of screen it says done with no change of firmware what am I doing wrong
Hmmmm ... ensure you have the right the firmware file:). I suspect you are doing the correct steps but something is slightly off and I suspect the version of the file.
I have the d5600 and I tried updating my firmware followed all the steps and it is not letting me copy and paste onto the memory card. I tried everything I just don't get it. The card reader is not on lock either.
Hmmm ... can you copy any file to the card? Try to create a simple test file using notpad. If the lock switch is not engaged, the card might be corrupted. You might also consider formatting the card and see if that helps.
My hp pavilion windows 10 laptop is not showing SD card at all but it is inserted I have both new versions downloaded but can't find how to put them on SD card
Hmmmm ... if you have another SD card, try it. If not, you can try one or more of the following: www.gihosoft.com/windows-tips/sd-card-not-showing-up-windows-10.html
RealWorld ok thanks yes I have a new 128GB I'll try it. Yeah everytime I insert the camera card the computer wants to import the photos on it. That's already been done. So I x that out and back to the downloads and I have both files downloaded and made my own temporary folder to put them in but there is no SD card shown to the left column to paste them to I will try this new card first
Thanks for the post/question Nathan:). Nikon along with other manufacturers only seem to release firmware updates and nothing regarding menus, etc. Would seem doable and welcomed. Might be nice to hack the menu system for fun though:).
@@RealWorld I wouldn't even dream of messing with it, never mind hacking it. LOL BTW, you mentioned the word "bug" in the firmware. Here's a little trivia question: Where did the phrase bug in the software come from? No cheating and looking it up. LOL
LOL - i have a technical background and always believed the bug was related to a moth. Nonetheless, I took a few moments to confirm and it seems I was a bit off:). Appears the term originally referred to a monster - something bad, etc.?
Mr real world I watched your video on firmware update I did this Monday morning my D3100 and my D5600 how ever they do not have distortion control data on the camera but both have an update for both cameras on the website. What do I do ?
Thanks for the post:). This video shows how to update both on the camera. What is your version listed for LD ( ruclips.net/video/yiVxtrOmSUw/видео.html )?
THIS is exactly the steps I did, I did exactly as you instructed, HOWEVER, when I push the shutter half way down the red focus light. still goes on, there is no beep, but the green circle light in the lower left corner of the viewfinder also lights up......ALSO NOW, when I push the AE-L button down the camera reacts the same----- AND I do do hear a beep when I get focus.....My question to you is, why except for the beep, does my camera reacts the same way when I push down the AE-L button, ????....Please note, when I sent up my Sony SLT for back button and press the shutter button half way down nothing happens, no focus light, nothing........Again, why does this Nikon 3400 when I sent up back button does the camera react the exact same way when I push down the AE-L button, the only thing different is I do not hear the beep, the beep I only hear the beep when I push the AE-L button..........Please check your 3400 and see if your camera reacts as mine, meaning when you push down the shutter button half way you see a red focus light and green focus circle go on as it does when you push the AE-L button down..........please respond, thank you
I updated my Nikon from the 1.11 to the 1.12 It worked for awhile and the update was easy. Last week my Snapbridge quit connecting to my phone AGAIN. I went to the download page and it showed an update from 1.12 to 1.13 06/07/2018 so I downloaded the update and NOTHING. I went back to the update page and it says update from 1.12 to 1.13 but if you drop down the menu and view the description it still says 1.11 to 1.12. Is there anywhere else to get this update. I have tried contacting Nikon with NO LUCK
I see 13 when I download ... hmmmm, try again and you should see a file called F-D3400-V113W.exe (downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/fw/284.html).
Thanks for the feedback!:) You might consider these basic steps I found on a support forum - www.nikonimgsupport.com/eu/BV_article?articleNo=000006488&configured=1&lang=en_GB ... I typically use a card reader to transfer images and rarely connect directly to my machine:).
Unfortunately, transferring video via bluetooth will not work regardless of firmware (or not work easily:)). Video files are typically much larger than photo files and bluetooth is relatively slow. The best method to transfer video is to pull video directly from the card (put the card into a usb card reader attached directly to a laptop, desktop, etc.).
RealWorld oh noo! I was hoping that I was doing something wrong and that there was an easier solution. I really appreciate your quick response. I had reached out to Nikon who did not ever respond sadly. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this videos!!! I have a Nikon D3400 and you have no idea how helpful they have been!
This is an adjustment made in the settings ... menu > setup menu > info display format > auto/scene/effects ... this will allow you to change the display:).
Insure the bin file is in the root directory of the SD card (at the highest level). In addition, insure you have the camera turned off when you insert the card. Once the card is inserted, turn the camera on.
RealWorld Right now the camera firmware version is showing up as 1.04. I've copied the latest 1.12 version in to SD card as instructed by you sir but I couldn't able to get that update in the drop down. I tried with 1.11 .bin file but still no developments. But I'm successful in updating lensware though. Couldn't able to figure out where the actual problem is.

Just updated to latest firmware, 1.13 and 2.017, had to buy a card reader though, duh! FYI the LD 2.017 firmware says remove the lens before applying the update. Just thought I'd mention that.
Thanks for the post/update and glad to hear it went well:).
Thanks for this walk through. Make sure the battery is full when updating. My Camera wouldn't let me update until i charged my battery. Makes sense.
Glad to be of help Derrick:). Ahhhh yes, a built-in safety feature. If the camera powers off for whatever reason during a firmware update, your camera could go bad for good.
Can we do this in Nikon D7100 too...??? Or is this only for Nikon D3400...??? Or does this applies to all Nikon DSLR’s...???
You should be able to do the same for the D7100 as well ... ensure you retrieve the proper drivers for the right camera though:).
Excellent video, clear instructions and you went at an easy to follow pace. Thanks dude
Thanks for the feedback and glad to be of help!:)
I purchased a Nikon DF in 2013 and haven't checked whether Nikon has released firmware updates. Do you know if Nikon has released firmwares? If so, I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to access the site and links. Thanks in advance.
Didn't solve my connectivity problem but I did feel like a guru updating the firmware on my "brand new" d 3400. thank you.
Thanks for the post/feedback!:) I have found SnapBridge to be finicky but the newer firmware seems to have helped to some extent:).
RealWorld Thanks very much for the information, I'll try this procedure and see what happens ☺
This was extremely helpful! So glad I came across this video
awesome and glad to be of help!:)
@@RealWorld I see. Thanks for the reply!
great video, thank you . Greetings from Hungary
Thanks for the post/feedback and welcome from the United States!:)
so well explained! new firmware update released on 2018/06/07
Thanks for the post/update!:)
Whats new with the update sir???
I can not get the new update to work. If you read the description it still states from V1.11 to V1.12
I believe additional enhancements for bluetooth.
try again using the following link: downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/fw/284.html
For some reason, when I go through all of these steps, I am not getting an update option on the screen that you did. Why might this be?
Is there firmware version for Nikon d3500
would need to check however i believe the firmware is the same (no updates)
Hi sir I love you videos. I need help. My camera suddenly has a stamp on latitude longitude on all my pictures. How can I remove it? Thanks ahead of time !
Thanks for the post/feedback/question:). Which camera do you own? The D3400 does not offer GPS, so I suspect you have a different camera or something else is being stamped on the images:).
After Updating all the firmware files,
Can i format my SD card ?
Yes, not a problem - once the firmware is loaded you are good to go:).
RealWorld Thank You for reply..
Before firmware update is it extremely needed to format the SD card?
@@MyIndoorPlants No, although it is recommended (I did not format):).
Awesome video. Truely a very helpful video.
I don't see LF in my firmware. Why?
might depend on the camera ... LF is the lens firmware version.
Hi.is it possible to downgrade the firmware? Because when i upgraded my firmware, i got dark photos even with the same settings from the old firmware
Yes, this should be doable ... run through the same process outlined in the video using the older firmware file(s). Nonetheless, it is odd the firmware update would result in darker images.
@@RealWorld thank you for the response. I downgraded the firmware. But the resulting images remain the same. I don't know what's the issue.
Caution:
Remove the lens before performing this update.
Thanks for the post/tip:). The newest update contains more than the one I originally posted ... makes sense to remove:).
Can I just download the firmware by connecting the camera through USB to the computer? And then downloading the files to the SD card there?
I did the firmware updates right after I got my new D3400 out of the box. Since you had the "old" firmware and used it for a while, did you notice any considerable change in the camera functions (apart from SnapBridge )? You should also recommend that the battery should be fully charged.
Another super helpful video! Thank you and keep them coming!!!
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) Great point regarding full battery as well:). I have not noticed any major differences, however Nikon stated the new firmware was focused on SnapBridge connectivity although I suspect a few other repairs/enhancements were made:).
Ios 14 will not connect to my phone. It worked fine before the update
snapbridge has always been a challenge. if you are unable to connect, try try and try again.
Sir which lens is suitable for this camera for background blure ?
What is LF? I did not find it in my D3400! how did you get it and how important is it?
LF stands for Lens Firmware and I see very little information on it from Nikon:). This is only applicable on certain lenses and I have not seen any updates for it ... perhaps Nikon was forward thinking:).
@@RealWorld thank you very much indeed.
I did everything that you said thank you by the way and got the bin folder saved to the SD card but when I inserted it back into the camera I did not have the option to update please help. I did it several times still to no avail
hmmmmm ... I see it has been a few days since you posted. Are you still having issues? The camera should auto detect the folder/file and process.
Yes thank you.
I am d3400 user.getting 200 photos clicked & my battery goes down..is it ok or problem in my camera or battery?Upgrading firmware would be solution??
The firmware would not hurt but I am curious to know more ... Nikon states 1200 shots on a full battery but keep in mind that is under ideal conditions which I assume is no preview, no live view, etc. Are you using Live View and/or are you spending lots of time with the screen on (previewing images, etc.)?
HI I followed the tutorial on how to update the D3400 firmware so far so good but the camera will not update all i get is the same versions showing and at the bottom of screen it says done with no change of firmware what am I doing wrong
Hmmmm ... ensure you have the right the firmware file:). I suspect you are doing the correct steps but something is slightly off and I suspect the version of the file.
does the update allow the d3400 to use the AF Nikkor 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 G lense auto focus
Yes, should not be an issue:).
Which zoom lens you are talking about AF 70-300 , AF-S 70-300 or AF-P 70-300 ?
Problem is the new software on Apple Iphone doesnt snyc with snapbridge
Thanks for the post/comment. I believe Nikon address iPhone sync in firmware version 1.11? I could be mistaken.
@@RealWorld hey thanks for getting back to me, I just had to restart my computer and re-download the firmware and that did the trick. Thanks!
So I x that out and back to the downloads and I have both files downloaded and made my own temporary folder to put them in but there is no SD card shown to the left column to paste them to I will try this new card first
I knoe this is relatively old, but what about software updates?
Great video content! Question, is it possible that you can use your phone as your screen when taking photos with dslr d3400?
Unfortunately, no - not to my knowledge:).
@@RealWorld thank you still 😄
I only have one memory card and I’m planning to upgrade my firmware. Do I need to format my memory card?
No
Not needed:).
In this it's not copying I don't know whatto do
hmmm - should copy without any issues. are you seeing errors?
Thank you definitely more confident in apply firmware updates, great step by step instructions :)
Thanks for the post Jane and glad to be of help!:) Check for newer firmware once or twice a year to ensure your camera has the latest updates, etc.
Hey RealWorld!
Can you make a tutorial on how to take family portraits? Which settings and modes to use on the D3400 and so on!
Thanks for the suggestion/question ... might be a good idea for an upcoming vid!:)
Hey Man love your video's I got a new d3500 this Day but seems that my computer don't recognise the camera .. any idea why?? Thank you anyway
Not available for nikon d3500
agreed - no firmware updates for the D3500 at this time.
Even after the firm update my videos do not download to my snapbridge... any recommendations?
Not a problem and glad to be of help!:) Video files are typically large, so transferring video via the card is the best approach in my opinion:).
Cant you connect the camera to a computer through a usb cable and access the card and dump the files that way if you dont have a card reader?
Thanks for the post and yes, you can use the camera as a card reader - good point to note/mention!:)
why does your lcd have a blue background and numbers while mine has dials with the aperture, iso, etc
i have the same firmware version as you do
This is an adjustment made in the settings ... menu > setup menu > info display format > auto/scene/effects ... this will allow you to change the display:).
RealWorld thank you
Hello sir. I'm not getting any update button even after copying the .bin file into the SD card. What could be the reason? Please help.
Insure the bin file is in the root directory of the SD card (at the highest level). In addition, insure you have the camera turned off when you insert the card. Once the card is inserted, turn the camera on.
RealWorld I did the same as instructed in the video sir. But to no avail.
Hmmm ... perhaps you are already on the current version?
RealWorld Right now the camera firmware version is showing up as 1.04. I've copied the latest 1.12 version in to SD card as instructed by you sir but I couldn't able to get that update in the drop down. I tried with 1.11 .bin file but still no developments. But I'm successful in updating lensware though. Couldn't able to figure out where the actual problem is.
Sir can u make a timelapse video using d3400 because it doesn't have timelapse setting
Unfortunately, no:). The D3400 does not offer a timelapse feature.
