  • On a quiet, rainy Sunday afternoon the custom BMW R90/6 bobber project gets a new ignition system to go along with the Siebenrock Power Kit. To support the new high compression piston and cylinders, the heads have been rebuilt and retrofitted with a dual spark plug system.
The dual plug heads require a number of support mods to work properly. A new pair of dual-output ignition coils need to be installed to allow us to run four spark plug wires. Because the coils require some extra oomph, a new Dyna III electronic ignition is added to provide the proper level of juice.
One of the challenges that comes with the dual plug heads is how to run the spark plug wires in a way that looks good! The wires are run here in a way that complements the shapes of the BMW motor and gas tank.

Changed mine to twin plugs some years ago, it makes a big difference to performance and gas milage. I took the bike out to Southern Europe/Balkans and then Turkey and the quality of fuel is poor. Twin plugs help a lot in this case. I know you will but pay attention to the timing, it needs to change for twin plugs, the simplified answer - it will need to advance a little.... Google " TOM CUTTER dual plug" there is a comprehensive guide online. Congrats it is looking good.

Okay, my last comment was before I had seen all of the video. I now see something that worries me. Do I see the leads from each coil going to each cyclinder? Should it not be one coil, and both leads to the same cyclinder ?...You don't need a spark on an exhaust stroke?. I am happy to be corrected and I make my observation with no malice.

I appreciate the knowledge and definitely don't mind the concern!
The plug wires were routed per Dynajet's recommendation (I actually had a shot showing the paper they provide but cut it in the interest of time) As far as I can tell, this is done so that both coils will provide their full power to each cylinder, because a plug firing during a compression stroke requires more juice than the plug would during the exhaust stroke. The bike is a wasted spark system so the coils are firing on both compression and exhaust strokes anyway, so we may as well utilize all of that power. As an added bonus, if one coil were to fail, the bike could still run.
I could be wrong but that's my understanding. It'll make timing this thing interesting, since you can move each of the two pickups on the dyna ignition independently!

@@roodlum You could use beefy Darltington transistors to source from the power rail directly instead of the pulse giver to the coils. unless the pulse giver already has a beefy transistor setup.
use the "Falstad" circuit simulator to find the correct resistor values to drive the base. could be 10K, but you might wanna use dual 0.5 watt resistors.

Hi, Did you modify the barrels yourself or replace them

These are brand new cylinders that are Nikasil plated. Going for longevity here!

Just dont see the point in twin plugs on a bobber style bike, its just an exercise in tech...not for me!

Dual plugs were recommended, by the manufacturer, as part of the big bore kit I installed. The new pistons have a higher compression ratio, so the dual-plug helps to get a more complete combustion. That's their reasoning, anyway.
