Hi a German here: you gotta drink wheat beers in a glass to get the yeast from the bottom to balance the flavor. Never drink it out of the bottle if you can avoid it hehe :)

Fun video and you were right about most things. You can indeed ride the bike 1000 miles in a day. I know because I did it with my new 1974 R90S. I bought it brand new from House of Yamaha/BMW in Santa Monica, CA in late 1973. They got 2 in and I bought one of them. Tommy Smothers of the Smothers Brothers comedy team bought the other.
There was an event back then called the California 1000 that ran out of L.A. Harley Davidson. The purpose was to cover 1000 miles in a weekend starting at midnight in downtown L.A. I covered 1000 miles on my 90S by midnight the first day. Unfortunately, I'd missed some turns and had to backtrack so when I hit 1000 miles I still had over 100 miles left to go to get back to the Harley dealership. I did the last 100 miles Sunday morning after a few hours sleep. No matter. For me it was an epic ride, one of my best in 56 years of riding. And the engine does indeed let you run all day at high speeds. I ran across the Mohave Desert for a couple of hours at speeds of 100-115mph. The bike in fact would do an indicated 125mph topped out but the last few mph took some time. As you suggested, the bike just runs. It doesn't fuss, it doesn't shake, doesn't vibrate much, it just motors down the road as fast as you want to go. It is over all the best all-around motorcycle I've ever owned. And almost 50 years later the looks are still stunning.

I owned 1974 R90S for about 12 years and it was one of my favorites. After a $2,000 purchase cost me about $1,500 in parts, tires, fluids etc to get road worthy. From there nothing regular maintenance oil changes, tires, greasing the splines, tune ups. Sold it for $5,000 to help defray one of my kids college tuition- a shame miss that bike but I’ve had many great bikes and many great memories.

I owned a 1974 R90s, enjoyed it for over 130k of wonderful miles, had 2 issues with the tranny, 4th gear had weak dogs and, well, I broke them, but only after it had endured 75k worth of spirited riding, then a spring in the shifter broke putting the bike in 2 gears at the same time, if this had happened at speed there would have been a lock up at the rear wheel, then there were the spoke issues, I kept exceeding the tensile strength of one or two spokes, so that problem was dealt with when I bought Lester wheels. Many thanks to San Diego's Brattin motors for fixing my screw ups

That was a fun little video. I have 2 airheads and am the Air Marshall for my local chapter. You need to do a little learning about how to properly prepare your Weiss beer for consumption! Rolling the bottle to mix all of the ingredients before you open it is one and that particular beer absolutely deserves a proper glass! Commercially brewing in the same location since 1040! The signature clove and banana flavours are a by product of the yeast. I have over 1000 bottles in my cellar. 🙂

Twelve years ago, I went into a Triumph dealer to buy a errm… Triumph. In their showroom was a BMW R1200S, and I just had to have it - I’d never seen one in the flesh before. I still own the R12S, and a Triumph came and went, but I can’t see myself ever selling the BMW. It also turned me on to classic BMWs and I’d like to find a good R90S. Very interesting video.

The transmission on your R90S is from a later /7 motorcycle (the externally-ribbed case is the indicator), which may be a prudent upgrade, since the ‘74 5-speed boxes were reportedly problematic. Pretty bike! Enjoy!

The best BMW airhead, I don’t know. It sure was a big game changer. The beer: German wheatbeers have a glove and banana flavor. But you don’t drink it out of a bottle, you pour it into a glass with the yeast added. It is like the Beamer, if you put in a little effort it will grow on you very fast.

I never had an R90/S but I did put 40K miles on an R90/6 that was dressed in the later model tank and seat. My bike was smoke red and since I worked at a BMW dealer back in the 80s I had all the frame mods, swing arm mods, cylinder head mods and a rear end out of a R80. I just had the Bings and not the Delartos. I loved that bike. It took me everywhere.

Born in 1957 I rode fast bikes in the 1970s. Café racer Nortons then Ducatis. My squadron Leader raved about the BMWs he had ridden in the 60s in Gezrmany. He would get the groundcrew to skim the heads to raise compression then appropriate AVGAS to make them ride like a bomb. So I knew BMW could be good. Then I had a long chat with a BMW rider. He was on the 750cc equivalent of your bike. He had upgraded to your 900 version. Unfortunately with the 70MPH speed limit at that time in England and the 900 hit a vibration frequency that was unpleasant at 70MPH. He sold the 900 and bought another 750. It was a sweeter ride. But hey, I'm not a BMW specialist, my garage is full of Nortons, V4 Hondas and Yamaha RD30LC.

When it was time for me to replace my 1976 BMW R76/6, I was too impatient to wait for a mint used 1975 or 1976 R90S. So I bought a new 1978 Red Smoke R100S. I named it Big Red Who Smokes. It was pretty epic, but I never warmed up to it like I felt about the later R90S models. Cast wheels and the rear disk brake made servicing the rear brake and tires a lot less convenient. And I really missed the hydraulic steering damper. Plus the Bing CV carbs guzzled gas. So I heartily agree with you about the later R90S models.

Your choice of beer is peerless. The German wheat beer is superb. Best with German sausage. Best BMW ever.? My R1200R Classic. Superb build and very fast. But it is more than this. With its ESA Telelever and Paralever it is capable of fast touring adventure touring. It can deal with terrible roads like a Tiger Tank. And it has real character real soul. And few bikes have that.

Yes, the 90s could well be Beemers best twin and bike. Hand build weren’t they? Fast, stable, well finished, the only ‘downside’ was that, back then, BMWs had an image problem no more. And only a few years ago you pick one up for a song. Never ridden one but I just know I could get on well with one - I currently own a 75/6. The trouble is……when forking out the folding for the 90s, would I be regretting not going the extra mile and buying that Guzzi V7 Sport swapping the beer for a grappa? Answers on a postcard…..

Why banana? It's not banana at all. It's a combination of sweetness of wheat instead of the usual rye, and the yeast, which is not a content of any other beer. But boy, you can NEVER drink that out of the bottle, it has to be poured very slowly down the inner wall of a tall half liter special "made for wheat beer" glas in one shot, so that the foam ( which is called flower ) would exactly rise to the top and not flow over. And please-- don't ever think of ice cubes! What you experienced must have been purely foam gulping. The drinking itself has a thousand years of culture too. Not just gulping anyhow!.

Most people don't drink their Hefe Weizen "mit hefe", or with yeast. Try pouring the beer off of the yeast sediment at the bottom of the bottle. There is a bit of a technique.
Incidentally, the banana or bubblegum or clove notes are all created by the yeast.

The R90s must be one of the best bikes BMW has ever built, my first bike was an airhead and I will own at least one for the rest of my life. 2 sidenotes: this bike should have a gearbox without the ribs on it, and the 2nd note: Weihenstephaner makes a really nice Hefe, but Paul Laner would be more appropriate since it also comes from München.

R90s to look at, 1984 R100rt or rs to ride. But that's only because I never owned a GS. If I had I'd probably go with one of those. My experience has been that the R100s are easier to ride long distances than the R90s. Plus they have better brakes and electronic ignitions. I found Bosch electronics to be only marginally better than Lucas. I think Joe and Robert must have been roommates in college or something. Ask me about the electrics on my Laverda 3C sometime.

This is such a great series. Look forward to it every week thank you.
I’ve been riding old motorcycles all my life. In 2005 I accompanied my buddy to Long Island to purchase a 1976 R90 S, he paid $5500 for it. That meant you he longer had to borrow my 69 BSA for the AMCA road runs. The BMW is definitely a cult bike. I have ridden them and in my opinion they ride like you’re riding a piece of wood. Solid but kind of hard and lackluster. Plus those cylinders are unnerving sticking out so far. They have a reputation for reliability but in my experience they require a lot of work. You know what they say opinions are like bottoms… everybody has one. A nice old Harley or British bike set up well will win the war against the Germans any day.

Reliabel but boring that was BMW as I knew them in the 1960 and -70. Rode with a friend who had one and it chunked on and I had to go "slow" with my Kawasaki 5oo two stroke when we traveled south down trough Germany from Sweden. I think that has changed a lot though, but racing machines these boxers are not! That said, today I would chose this type of BMW for long distance today.
