  • Today we are changing the stock BMW coils for a dual post Enduralast coil. We are also making one new ignition wire and giving my R90 a test run. I used the 3ohm version, my electronic ignition requires a specific resistance.

Hi! I was also looking at this upgrade and move away from the dual 6Vcoils.
I have a BMW R80RT 1984. It has a stock ignition with the “bean can” and no condenser. Is it compatible direct or would I also need to change to an electronic ignition?

If your bean can doesn't have a condenser on the outside, you already got an electronic ignition. It is a original bmw ignition with a hall effect sensor inside the can. Do you even have dual 6 v coils? You should have a dual terminal coil OEM bmw. I just worked on a 1984 r65 with bmw electronic ignition and it already has one single dual terminal coil.

@@HeikosGarage Yes I have the dual 6V coils at the moment that ideally I would like to get rid of. I saw your other video where you were installing the Enduralast coil and wanted to know if that was directly compatible with my system. My coils are very old and going bad. they are expensive and hard to find here in Europe. so the upgrade would be more practical if I can directly swap it in.

@@Bizzyjjjeks there are a few things to check before you buy new coils. Open the bean can with two small Philips head screws and see if you have points in there or if there is a hall effect sensor in it. That difference will determine which version of the two post coil you need to buy. If you have points it needs be a 3.0ohms coil, if you have hall effect you would need a 1.5ohm coil.
Checkout www.euromotoelectrics.com they have Enduralast 6v coils that could replace your old stock coil and they also have a few different two post coils available. Just for window shopping. I bet you can get what you need in Europe.

@@HeikosGarage thanks! Indeed there are no points in the can, it has the Hall effect sensor. I will go for the 1.5ohm coil. Many thanks! Keep the great content coming!

Sorry, but the RUclips app doesn't give me a translate option. I will answer your question as soon as I am in front of my desktop computer.

Thanks. I just installed this with new spark plugs as well and it started, I let it run for a few minutes and when I tried to restart it again. Nothing; won't start. Trying to figure out what could be the issue.

@@HeikosGarage Yup, put on a euromotors high ouput charging system last week; spins. As soon as it started I was getting voltage and seemed to run fine, until I shut it off. It dies on the highway last night and figured it was the spark plugs.

@@ianbestor1528 sparkplugs are usually not problem. They last a long time. You need to check if you have spark. The best way to do that is with a spark tester that gets installed between the sparkplug and the high tension lead (the sparkplug cap). You can get one at every auto parts store

@@HeikosGarage thanks for the quick replies. Turns out the Bean can wire was pinched behind the front motor cover and rear. Massaged the pinch and it started right up multiple times.
