It's TIME to MOVE ON

  • Way back in 2018 we started dreaming about how we could get a house on our land in the Hood Canal. We met with a builder in the area and he walked around our land, listened to our ideas and dreams, and he LOVED it all.
We got really excited, and then asked him what he thought the cost would be for a house like we were discussing, and when he told us, we realized we would have to sell our old house in OR, and STILL take our a construction loan to make it so we could afford to have a house built.
This idea DID NOT excite us.
So we started to dream and scheme.
What if we built our own house??
What if we found a house that was a kit and came with all the parts we needed to build it and had directions to guide us through??
Did that sort of thing exist?
Would that be a cheaper option??
Well, guess what? That option did exist, and it was a much more inexpensive option.
We could build our own house. Eventually sell our old house, and we would be 100% mortgage free.
    Say what?????
Here are now in 2024, and our kit house is almost complete, and we’ve been able to hold onto our old house where we’ve stored all of our stuff in the basement while that house has been an Airbnb and a long term rental.
Now, though, it’s finally time to sell our old house and move into our mortgage free era!
It’s been a hard road of building our own house to get to this point, and now that it’s time to move all of our stuff out of storage we have another challenge ahead.
It’s a stressful and emotional time, but when we keep our eyes on the prize and remember why we started this whole adventure, it makes it a little easier when we realize that it will all be totally worth it.
Follow along as we start the moving process out of our house in Oregon so we can enter our mortgage free era.
    ***************************************************************************
And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on RUclips. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 10 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.
Unfortunately, some unforeseen events in 2020 that were completely out of our hands put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.
In the summer of 2021, we FINALLY moved to the Hood Canal so we could start the build of our future home. While we are building our home, we are living in a camper trailer and the yurt that we built in the summer of 2020. We hope to have our cabin kit home built by the end of 2023. Just my husband and I are building the house. We get help here and there from friends along the way and we do plan to get help on the roof but other than that we are doing it all on our own.
Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.

I don't think you should worry or bother with those that don't agree with how you guys are going about your life. I say Bravo to you both for having the courage to build your own home. Many dream of it. You guys are doing it while raising children, and other critters lol. Enjoy your work. Thank you.

Building your own home sure isn't for the faint of heart. It has been MUCH harder than we anticipated but also thankful that we are almost at the finishline.

I once had a number of people tell me to sell my FIL's house "as is", instead of fixing it up to sell. We didn't take their advice. You are doing fine not listening to others opinions about what you should or shouldn't do. Only you are walking in your shoes and you will be able to work around the furniture- I've been there, done that and it will work out just fine.

I moved in and out of houses about 30 times and learnt that no matter how much you love your furniture and deco, just very few peaces can fit in different places. Because spaces and materials, colors and light are always different. In the end I always made changes. Tell me what you think when you will have moved all your stuff in the house. What come next for you in going to be franctic, wild and tiring. But in the end so rewarding. See you soon on video

Moving is like hitting your finger with a hammer. You gotta focus on what it'll feel like when it quits hurting.

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  6 месяцев назад

That's a great way to think of it and pretty funny as well. I actually enjoy helping friends move because you get to reduce the hurt a little bit, but you get to walk away from it all at the end of the day.
