I met Bob Beamon in 1983 or 1984 at the Children’s Museum in Indianapolis. A wonderful man and his world record stood for many years. Great story of a great man.
What a story brilliant ..his mother gone at 11 months he filled in for some one who got sick amazing ...and the rest is history 1968 record still stands!!!
That was an incredible jump that has not been beaten to this day, 56 years later. I've heard that the thin air at that altitude (7399ft) might have helped him out in Mexico city, but he still had everything right that jump.
It was beaten by Mike Powell in the world championships 1991. Powell jumped 8.95m, thereby extending the world record by 5 cm. So Beamon's world record stood for 23 years, while Powell's has stood for more than 32 years and counting.
@@wvu05I saw that jump live on televisión. It was unbelievable right after Beamon landed. I am sure he entered another dimensión, something You only do once in a lifetime.
Bob Beamon a Legend an amazing Athlete of the World, Well Done 🙂👍

@@brian_sacks But the olympic record still stands, @nathanielgermon975 could've been talking about the olympic not the world record
If it was all about the altitude, how come nobody else broke the previous world record that day?

@@wvu05 I agree and to your point the other jumpers under the same conditions did not exceed 26 feet 8 inches in the competition.
What a Legend - Bob Beamon!
