I grew up watching him play for BVB rivals Bayern in the early 2010s and he was always like a constant threat. It felt like there was no moment you could really feel safe until the very last whistle blew. Watching these highlights back brings back many memories and it’s only in the last few years that I realised how much of an icon he really is . Yeah he missed some big chances during his time with the national team but when in question he did what he could best and absolutely blasted goals. Even though this lead to some tough memories especially as a Dortmund fan I think he is really underrated and the majority of German fans refer to him as a poor finisher which is absolutely 0% true if you stick to his stats. Much like with other former German internationals like Matthäus, Völler or even Toni Kroos, many German people as well as the media wouldn’t even consider them real legends but rather give them stupid nicknames and focus on their private life and gossip just to have something negative to talk about. For me Mario Gomez is one of the best strikers I’ve ever seen in the Bundesliga and also pretty underrated when it comes to international level (scored 4 goals in the 2012&16 euros combined, all of which decided games)

He was so professional that when he was on the verge of suspension, he didn't commit a single foul or get a yellow card for 17 games.

Haaland has huge presence, works hard and can score from any angle. Gomez had no presence on the pitch, didnt run, wasnt strong nothin - just rebounds and goals from 7metres which were perfectly assisted by robbery, schweinsteiger, kroos or müller.
