  • For this new album review, Taylor Swift goes indie pop and folk and wins critical adoration on her most well-written album to date, although not without lingering hangups and question of identity.
Best: ‘the last great american dynasty’, ‘exile’ ft Bon Iver, ‘august’, ‘this is me trying’, ‘illicit affairs’, ‘mad woman’
    Worst: 'invisible string'

For me, Taylor Swift has long been that artist who I knew had potential, had shown on occasion that she could get there, but had multiple records in a row of her squandering it. Red, 1989, and Reputation, to me, were a downhill slide in quality that bother me a great deal. I didn’t hate any of those albums, and there are quite a few good songs to be found on them, but it was hard to enjoy them when the thought was in my head of “aren’t you going to do more than this?”
Lover gave me some hope, as the songs past those first couple of singles (which I found awful), seemed like a return to form. So my hopes returned, though with only cautious optimism.
But Folklore delivered on everything I ever hoped and had started to think would never happen, is better than I ever expected even at my most hopeful, and I think is one of the best albums released this year, in a year packed with great music. If Fiona Apple hadn’t dropped a future classic, I’m not sure how anyone would have released a better album this year. I just hoped Taylor Swift would release something I could comfortably give an 8, or maybe even a 9. But this is a 10/10 in my book, and a strong one at that.
By the way: Invisible String is either being misunderstood or slept on, because that song is actually brilliant when you consider what she’s saying in the context of her own past and that she is embodying characters on this album that may or may not be connected to her own viewpoints. Not to mention that soaring melody with a beautifully dramatic key change at the end.

rep, red and folklore are my fave albums of her. everybody hates rep due to misrepresentation of its single choices but swear there were more than just the singles. The reason you hate those albums aka red, 1989 and rep are due to high production or maybe Shellback and Max Martin diesn't appeal to your taste🥲

I personally love this album. The album showcases her songwriting in the best way possible with her storytelling about fictional love and sadness in a elevated and mature way which I love since it shows her deep skill and depth as a songwriter. I also love the composition of the album since it carries a minimal and dark atmosphere with the spare percussions, guitar, strings, and piano and it truly speaks for itself, it goes with the overall lyrical meaning of the album and it represents indie and folk ballads very well. In my opinion, I also think that this album is at her best vocally since it conveys a lot of emotion and I feel like the vocals are just as good as how it is lyrically and by it’s composition and production. As for this review, I really like it because instead of being straight up generous or straight up critical of the album, you were trying to nitpick and balance out both the negatives and positives of the album. However, I felt like it was a little too all over the place and too detailed so I barely was able to understand what you were trying to say and come across, but that is just me.

The Swifties might cancel you for giving this any less than a strong 8/10 (full disclosure, it's my favorite album so far this year), but I really enjoyed this review, Mark, and you make a lot of great points. I fully agree that Hoax, even if I think it's a great song on its own, is a truly bizarre closer, especially when Peace would've been such a great way to cap off the album. Loved the connection you made between "Last Great American Dynasty" and the arc of reputation, as well. What I think is so captivating about this album is how it sees Taylor making more of an active statement on how we mythologize through art, especially since she's built her entire career on self-mythologizing through her music. Anyway, tangent over, great stuff!

If there is one thing I have seen that I want to highlight about "Speak Now" (not "Lover") is that its length was at least praised with the feeling that Taylor Swift knew when to use that time to tell a story or ring out emotion especially on cuts like "Dear John". All that being said, I tend to go back to "Fearless" on pop crossover hits with at least stronger hooks intertwined with average songwriting. It's a little ironic the length is getting criticized with almost all of her albums when "Speak Now" is, iirc, still is her longest album to date.

thank you for this review! you brought up really great critiques here and you have great understanding of her mythos and the history of her artistry which is very cool to see.
i actually like that fiction and reality is blurred in this album. even in her trilogy of teenage love triangle the songs still echo her own life referenced in other songs/past albums. personally i don't think it lessens the impact of the themes at all, in fact i think it strengthens the themes. it's exactly like what she touched upon in the liner notes about the title "folklore" itself referencing stories that have unclear origins that combine fiction and reality.
i personally also liked that the album ended on a sad note with "hoax". it's possible that "peace" and "hoax" are about different relationships, but putting that aside, her albums have always ended on a hopeful if not happy note so i find this is a refreshing (even though a little depressing) change. it felt real to me.
i have to agree with you that this may be just a detour and she'll go back to pop in the next projects but honestly? i'd be fine if lover was her last pop album. i mean, folklore is already doing really well commercially and breaking records. she was doing well commercially as well when she did country. i just hope this encourages her to keep experimenting.

I've heard a couple of people talk about the production. Some absolutely love it; others feel the way you do. I wonder if some of your production concerns would have been solved if she had chosen to have only one of two (Antanoff or Dessner) produce with her. Personally, I like the production because it does bring me back to her Speak Now or even Fearless days.
I do, however, agree, with you on the order of the tracks. I think she gets too caught up in how much her easter eggs flow and loses sight of the flow of the tracks. On the other hand, I don't agree that the teenage love triangle is the best example of tracks that need to be grouped together. Those three songs were from three different people's perspectives at different times. I don't think those are the only three songs narrated by those characters though. In conclusion, by grouping cardigan, august, and betty you may be telling one story, but losing out or at least breaking up a larger one.

Sure, I like how she finally made a full indie-folk album, but this is the most impressive song-writing I've heard from her to date, and that's what's winning so many critics over on this!
Like you said, 'Exile' & 'The Last Great American Dynasty' are among some of the year's best songs so far, and while 'Folklore' as a whole isn't "amazing" due to it losing a bit of steam in the second half, but it's still really good and the potential for Taylor Swift now more than ever is astounding.
A part of me still wishes that 'Cruel Summer' was released as a single (absolutely baffled it wasn't pushed to pop radio, would've been huge there!), but hey, it's worth it if we've got a surprise LP from her less than 12 months later!

I think this album was ordered weirdly so that it wasn’t so obvious as to how many song connections there are. It’s kind of like an exciting puzzle to figure out. As for the closing track, it also felt weird to me, but there’s a bonus track called “the lakes” that you have to get on a cd or vinyl, and I think that will be the true conclusion to the album. I agree that this is not her best album, probably still Red and Speak Now for me. But this project is great in its own right and I think there’s still plenty of connections and stories to figure out in the album.

Exactly. Aaron Dessner confirmed that The Lakes is meant to be the true ending for the album, but Taylor didn't want to feature it here to avoid her trope of closing the album with an uplifting ballad like she's done since Red.

Also the way Taylor prepared to release this album was by...not telling her record label that it was ready to go or indeed that it even existed until shortly before she made the announcement, according to Aaron Dessner. Idk what kind of contract she is on or of he was being serious (I assume he was) but looool. Dessner was getting other musicians to help with aspects of the production and he could not tell them what project it was for. She has a whole raft of employees who work just for her so I believe she could this off. The fact there is no real obvious radio single and that she ditched her trademark extended album roll-out is very interesting to me.

As a swiftie this is easily her best lyrically done album an easy 8/10 for me. But 1989 is still my favourite with a 9/10 and Lover is 2nd with the same score with 8/10. But Lover does better more times than Folklore with a few duds in Lover.

I really love this album. I do agree it's long, but in a "too much of a good thing" type of way. It hurts the album as whole even if I love every song individually. I would have bumped two songs to the deluxe version to keep it tighter and stronger.

Here before the flood of controversy that will inevitably follow:
In my opinion, this is the best review for Taylor Swift's "folklore" I've seen so far tied to my consistent fear of Taylor Swift's appropriate aesthetics and sounds but don't know how they properly work or even try to create a unique sound for herself in order to create great music. It's the easy critic-bait after a really messy era and it will allow her to win those Grammys she hardly deserves (which is strange cause didn't Bon Iver won a Grammy recently, not gonna Google for this, hell she may end up working with Billie Eilish or her brother Finneas for the yas bitch tea spilling bop, that wins all the Grammys and goes to #1 for weeks at a time)
It's a consistent issue going back to "Red" (unfortunately tainted by your review of "1989" to truly understand) in that her mainstream pivot is trying to ensure that she's an above-average writer trying to fit in the modern paradigm with pop songs that fit her personality copied wholesale by other better acts. When, if I'm being honest, she had a unique personality in the pop sphere during her early work slowly morphed into this "pop icon" status that doesn't seem to go far with her natural skillset. If anything, this project is the same underlying issue with "1989" in that, despite being a personal change for the artist, only seems like a cash grab to find sounds not "popular by the mainstream" to give them pop airplay. Really, I'm left thinking why Taylor Swift doesn't comment on her position of pop music in this vein in any of her songs outside of fragments, cause a song like this on any of her albums would be appreciated. Or not, Taylor Swift going back to the country wouldn't be bad and she's got the real charisma and fandom that will gay faint all over it, as long as there is an individual sound or quality.
Hell the obvious influences on many of her indie pivots, I'm inclined to call Taylor Swift a Lady Gaga clone, cause it's the same problems Lady Gaga has in her career. long with inviting the engineer and main producer of NFR, she isn't helping matters inviting those comparisons/criticisms either. I bet the second I listen to any of these albums/discographies of these comparisons, the album truly will suffer (Not like this album will start a resurgence of indie acts for crossover potential or a new trend of indie-folk star crossover)
Still, 'm actually excited for listening to this new Taylor album with fresh ears and see if all my worries are just "silly thoughts". After all the hype around this album cannot be ignored. Sure hope Taylor moves in this singer-songwriter direction, she might make an album I genuinely love.
Quick Question: @Spectrum Pulse, seeing your positive reception towards "Speak Now" what's the rating for this album in retrospect (light 8, solid 8?) Also why are you on Tumblr?

The funny thing is that this album is already significantly outperforming Lover and is much more stable. Plus, Cardigan (which you didn't even mention once) is already looking like it'll be a smash hit on adult contemporary radio and she has Exile planned to be released as a single on 3 August, and it's already pulling huge numbers on streaming. You'll realise how well it is doing on Billboard Breakdown next week, where it is expected to land as many as 12 songs in the top 40, and 3 in the top ten alone.
Update: Betty will be sent as a single to country radio on 17 August. The contenders for the fourth single are The 1, Invisible String and August. Seems like she wants to get full mileage out of this one.

Surprised that one is not a solo review. I predicted "folklore" given the points on Mark's Twitter, but what about Logic? Well, part of the reason is pretentious and nothing at all to say. Logic "retiring" from rap seems nonsense, especially in comparison to Nicki's Retirement plans as well, you do know it's called indefinite hiatus, right.

Are we talking about the same man who manipulated a situation and was in on leaking a partially recorded conversation that misled the public to turning on and bullying Taylor excessively online after he humiliated her on an award show, after he lied and created a nude sculpture of her in a video to humiliate her, after he had his fans chanting "f**k Taylor Swift", after he called her out of her name, took credit for her fame, and said she owed him sex? Maybe that is a low move, but Kanye gets no sympathy from me. He did her dirty a million times over. She owes him nothing. Period.
