    While I'm a guitarist, I can spend eons writing MIDI drum parts, but hi-hat to me is a BIG challenge and especially as to placement of open hat hits. It almost seems as if hi-hat is a standalone instrument unto itself, with an underappreciated amount of power behind them.

    How do you do double strokes so fast?... I feel like I might be gripping my sticks wrong, or maybe my technique is off... but I just can't continue going that fast!

    • @lanzy95
      @lanzy95 7 лет назад +26

      Adam hey man, I get his question a lot from people and I particularly got skilled with rudimental based percussion from my drum corps background. I figured I'd give some insight on what works for me if that's cool! As far as playing doubles fast, it's all about relaxing the grip. The tendency like u said is for some players to over squeeze and try too hard to manipulate the rebound with their wrists and larger muscle groups. Really focus on relaxing and relying on the hand and arm motion to create that consistent "check" since it's doubles on top of a 16th note check. The problem is that players try harder and work harder as the tempo gets faster but really there should be less work done on the players part and more from relying on the rebound of the sticks and the surface of the drum. Back fingers should be incorporated enough to support the rhythm, not to do anything extra and over articulate because that's how u get fatigued quickly. the fulcrum should be relaxed to allow the stick to move freely within the grip. Hope this helps man. Start slow, and build the chops in the fingers.
