  • Famed astronomer and Cornell University scientist Carl Sagan takes the viewer to the Red Planet in this circa 1972 official NASA film, “Mars: The Search Begins.” Sagan explains that not much was known about our neighbor in space until the unmanned Mariner 9 space probe, which was launched toward Mars in 1971. At mark 00:55, geologist and astronomer Harold Masursky explains how scientists were working to understand how the planet was formed, while biologist Gerald Soffen explains the importance of the search for life on Mars (mark 01:27). Beginning at mark 01:53, we see several images taken by Mariner 9 while we’re told of the significance of the scenes, including massive dust storms and volcanoes. At mark 04:20 we learn of the temperature variations that range from -150 degrees at night to 70 degrees on the equator. As the film continues we learn of how scientists were using images to carefully map the surface, as well as it’s two moons - Phobos and Deimos. Mark 06:15 shows artist renditions of what the surface of Mars may look like, with red sands giving way to blue sky and wispy white clouds. Sagan returns at mark 07:00 to discuss changes observed on the Martian surface that they concluded were the result of high winds uncovering material underneath, while images sustain his claims. He also discusses 3,000 mile long rifts on the Martian surface (mark 10:15) and possible volcanic activity at Olympus Mons (mark 12:30). Mariner 9 images also contained a few surprises, Sagan explains starting at mark 15:30, including hundreds channels that they believed may have been cut by running water - even though no evidence of water had been found. At mark 19:30, Soffen returns to ponder “what is life” and does life in any form exist on Mars. At mark 21:55, the film looks toward the future the planned 1976 Viking mission, which safely landed a pair of spacecraft on the planet. (Soffen explained, starting at mark 22:05, that a major goal of Viking was to search for life). The film’s narrator (actor Vic Perrin) concludes at mark 27:25 that the mission may answer one of science’s greatest questions: “Has life developed only on Earth? Or is there life elsewhere?”
Mariner 9 (Mariner Mars '71 / Mariner-I) was an unmanned NASA space probe that contributed greatly to the exploration of Mars and was part of the Mariner program. Mariner 9 was launched toward Mars on May 30, 1971 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and reached the planet on November 14 of the same year, becoming the first spacecraft to orbit another planet - only narrowly beating the Soviets' Mars 2 and Mars 3, which both arrived within a month. After months of dust storms it managed to send back clear pictures of the surface. Mariner 9 returned 7329 images over the course of its mission, which concluded in October 1972. Mariner 9 remains a derelict satellite in Mars orbit. It is expected to remain in orbit until approximately 2022, when the spacecraft is projected to enter the Martian atmosphere and either burn up or crash into the planet's surface.

I had this video on VHS as a little kid back in the late '80s and couldn't watch it enough. This was my first encounter with Carl Sagan. I haven't seen this since I was probably 10. The combination of the visuals and the creepy music are still just as mesmerizing as they were back then. Thanks Periscope!!!

      Stupid, period.
Carl Sagan "The Cosmos is all that is or was or ever will be."
Carl Sagan, "I can’t imagine anyone denying the existence of the laws of nature, but I don’t know of any compelling evidence for the old man in the sky."
More from the dumbass, "It’s perfectly possible that the universe is infinitely old and therefore uncaused. In fact, there are detailed cosmological models that hold such a view and that are consistent with everything we know. To my mind, it seems not fully satisfactory to say that there was a first cause. That seems to postpone dealing with the problem rather than solving it. If we say “God” made the universe, then surely the next question is, “Who made God?” If we say “God” was always here, why not say the universe was always here? If we say that the question “Where did God come from?” is too tough for us poor mortals to understand, then why not say that the question of, “Where did the universe come from?” is too tough for us mortals? In what way, exactly, does the God hypothesis advance our knowledge of cosmology? What predictions does it make on which the hypothesis will stand or fall?"
      from: www.uscatholic.org/articles/202001/god-and-carl-sagan-cosmos-big-enough-both-them-31939
Read the article. Have a vomit bag or trash can nearby for what a hypocritical, lying, mocking, disgusting, foolish person he was.
Now, Carl the dumbass NEVER can get around these laws and what the lead to...
Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it.
....yet the buffoon thinks creation happened naturally, but the idiot says, "What predictions does it make on which the hypothesis will stand or fall?" as the crap-for-brains ignores the CLEAR science that creation had to happen by God supernaturally! Still the fool who ignores the laws farted out, "I don’t know of any compelling evidence for the old man in the sky." Notice his mocking God, "man in the sky" as if that makes him look smart as he completely ignores the evidence.
His question, "Who made God?" is as dumb as he is.
So in his way of foolish thinking, if a supernatural creator created the natural realm, then that supernatural creator who created the natural realm with its natural laws has then become also bound by those natural laws the supernatural creator created. So explain why a supernatural creator is also bound by the laws the supernatural creator created. Or, show how smart you are and just give your science for creation happening naturally and don't forget to give your science how the natural laws were created, too. If he wanted to act smart, it may be a good idea to actually show you are.
Sagan the dumbass will at some point face his Maker for his judgment of what he believed in this life. His extreme shame and regret was all his choice. He wanted to be a hypocritical dumbass. Then he'll be thrown into the lake of fire. It will be his 'The End' and be remembered no more. ALL his choice and for others who follow that fool.

Olympus Mons new? Based on a lack of meteor craters? Good guess, but, uh, wrong. It kept spewing magma, which covered up most meteor strikes, until it ceased being active.
Interesting how statements stated in a monotone and confident voice, especially when wearing a white lab coat, and bereft of a head wrapped in bandages, and in a manner devoid of grasping one’s head and rocking back-and-forth rhythmically, and while definitely NOT stating “I t’ink I’m loozin’ mah mind” equals having one’s opinions, no matter how wrong they are, with facts.
