- Remastered NASA documentary about the Viking probes to Mars. Mission profile is discussed, including launch, insertion into Martian orbit, landing and conducting experiments. Scientist describe the experiments and conditions for Martian life.
The Viking program consisted of a pair of identical American space probes, Viking 1 and Viking 2, which landed on Mars in 1976. Each spacecraft was composed of two main parts: an orbiter designed to photograph the surface of Mars from orbit, and a lander designed to study the planet from the surface. The orbiters also served as communication relays for the landers once they touched down.
Original footage from NASA. Sound cleanup, film dust removal, conversion to the original 24 fps frame rate, geometry correction and color restoration by Retro Space HD.

9:39 voice of Carl Sagan!
Lary Lewman who narrated this film, was the voice of Maryland Public Television during the 1970s.
First landing was planned for the 4th of July 1976, the US bicentennial, but was delayed due the orbiter finding the planned landing site to be too rocky. Even so, look at the landing site of the 2nd lander. It was just luck that it avoided landing on a large rock that could have pierced it's belly.
Landing on top of the rock might have tilted the lander too much, preventing a good antenna pointing towards Earth or arm operations. If really unlucky perhaps it would have fallen over.
Amazing stuff for the time. Thanks for this 😉
Voice of Carl Sagan is cool
That is my space probe!
An very impressive mission, but the Apollo program which preceded it produced "the most sophisticated spacecraft ever designed for any purpose." However, as far as unmanned spacecraft go, that would be correct at that time.
The perspective here is indeed unmanned. Robotic exploration was favored for Mars; human exploration for the Moon.
Coming December 22nd, it's the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope.
It's going to blow up!
@@rubydooby1679 You don't know that, even I can't give that prediction and that is incredibly frightening.
😉 Let's not be negative! It's not a Starship prototype 😉
Two years later, the James Webb telescope is alive and well.
Retro Space HD, with your permission and upon the successful launch and deployment of the James Webb Space Telescope I would like to post a comment with a playlist of music that best describes the journey of the James Webb Space Telescope, it will be mostly choral music and reflective of the holidays? Also, if the launch is successful, I would like permission to post a church service that myself and Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island, Nebraska are going to be doing on December 26th?
I don't see the relation to my videos, but you are free to comment as you like! As long as it doesn't cause trouble with other users, no problem with me.
How many of you guys enjoyed seeing Michael Strahan and Laura Shepherd (daughter of Astronaut Alan Shepherd) flying in space?
Haahaahaaa. "Like the real Vikings, exploratory ". Well, slightly less rampagey and murdery.
