Thank you Sir, for an episode concerning my favorite cartridge. Like you, I believe in hunting rather than long-range sniping of game. And the Whelen is certainly capable at actual hunting ranges.

I love my 35 Whelen. I load my own ammo and I wouldn’t be afraid to use it on any large or dangerous game on either American continent. It is more accurate with 250 grain bullets than with a 200. The caliber and load is much overlooked by many, but it is my favorite round and I am thankful that you presented this video concerning the Whelen.

I also love my Whelen. I have owned many magnum caliber rifles and once I got my Whelen I sold all magnum rifles. I load for my Whelen also and I use a 225 grain bullet with which I reach an average muzzle velocity of 2816 fps. This load is somewhat lower than what I consider to be a max load. To reach that velocity I use 56.5 grains of powder and to reach the same velocity with the same weight bullet in my .338 I have to use 72 grains of powder. The 35 Whelen is the most efficient cartridge I ever loaded for.

@@russellkeeling4387 Russell, I have 225 grain bullets that are Barnes TSX all-copper hunting bullets. They seem to be very well constructed hollow point bullets. What powder do you use? I have been using IMR 4064 and it seems like it is one of my best choices.

@@ronlafitte6864 My load I like a lot is with IMR 4064. I just got some Viht 140 I'm going to give a try. It looks good in the book and is very available so I'll try it. You know I envy those guys that have a Remington 7600 in .35 Whelen. That rifle is chuck full of power.

@@russellkeeling4387 Yes, it definitely is! It's my favourite cartridge and I believe you could hunt anything on the two American continents with it. I love IMR 4064 powder. My rifle is a military Mauser that was rebarreled to 35 Whelen. I had a Remington 7400 in 30-06 that I sure should have kept. I know it would have been a real go-getter if I rebarreled it and found a stronger recoil spring. Good luck with your loads! I really enjoy reloading!

I load my own for my .35 Whelen. I use a 225 grain bullet and I do not load to maximum. My average velocity with my load is 2816 fps so it produces nearly 4000 pound feet of energy at muzzle. I also load for my 30-06 and I can not push a 220 grain bullet within 200 fps of the velocity of the Whelen. I would not pause to shoot any animal at an ethical range which for me would be 400 yards or less.

    I have 3 rifles in 35 whelen.
Remington 7600, with williams rear peep site, williams fibre optic front post.
remington 7600, bushnell elite 1-4×24 sighted 3" high at 100.
ruger m77. Bushnell elite 4500 2.5-10... same sight in.
This is my pet calibre, bought first 7600 back in 1989, used, when nobody, and i mean nobody in my area had even heard of a 35 whelen.
Now, several of my friends own one... because theyve seen mine stomp, hammer, flatten, drt kill everything.
Hit properly, everything dies. My other guns are .270 win, and have also taken their share of big game...moose, deer, and 1 5x5 bull elk. Barnes ttsx 130 gr preferably, but hornady 140 gr accubond works perhap as well. No cheap hardware store ammo.. kills like lightning yes, but impact causes too much meat damage.
But take the same shot and same impact location with a whelen, vs a 308, or 3006, etc, and it is only then that it can be truly appreciated.
My 2 scoped guns are sighted 3" high at 100 yds. The other, a 7600, has a williams peep and firesight front post. Great combo.
Ive taken my share of moose, elk, and deer with the whelen. Same results.
Ive used every kind of factory ammo you can buy here in canada. I dont reload. No time.
In practical hunting application, i hit where i aim, out to 300 easily, regardless of load.
Most emphatic kills... huge 6x6 bull elk at 225 yds. Quartering to. Ruger m77, 225 gr nosler accubond. Straight down, dead before his knees buckled. On video.
52 inch bull moose at 100m, rem. 7600, 250gr remington corelokt. Broadside. Straight down. No lunge, thrust, hop, stutter. Dead before his knees buckled.
Big 160 inch 10 pt whitetail. 250 yds across cutover. Ruger m77, hornady superformance 200gr interlock. Quartering to shot. Again, instantly dead, not even an ear flutter.
I am leery however, of the federal trophy 225 gr bearclaw....IMO... too stiff a bullet. 3 kills were clean passthroughs and very little perceived impact effect... 50 yd runs and dead, but 50 yds too far imho.
This Strong tendency of DRT kills is the common theme, and what makes the whelen just so special.
Lots of funky new calibres to choose from yes, but, the whelen has proven time and again, to be the bomb. I, and a growing number of our crew, who have have come to realize that, will stick with it!
As i told my son, with the whelen, you are good with 1 gun, for anything you will ever want or need to kill. Period.
Best of luck with your project... 2 thumbs up on the whelen!!

Elk hammer is right, handloaded for a Remington 700 CDL 24" barrel. Used RE-15 , 225 gr TSX being pushed to 2700 fps, took an elk @ 307 yds one shot. Broke both front shoulders.

Long range shooting is just that. It is shooting not hunting. A hunter does not need to shoot from a half mile away because he or she can get closer.

I'm impressed by the . 35 Whelen, and am impressed that the cartridge is a factory loaded option. All that said, I'm really wondering why . 338-06 is not factory legitimized. .338 bullets are almost common as dirt and have a lot of options. I would guess that there isn't a nickels worth of difference between the field performance of . 338-06 and . 35 Whelen. Also to toss into the mix, is . 30-06 itself with 200 grain bullets. I just like how heavy high SD bullets don't need blistering speed to work well on heavier than deer game. .30 to .35 cal pushing 200-225 grain bullets are all serious medicine anywhere near 2700-2800 FPS.

Almost the same performance as the European cartridge 9,3x62

    • @johnnorman7708
      @johnnorman7708 Год назад +3

That 9.3x62 probably should have been better known in North America. Certainly has been around long enough. Funny when something really good never gets much traction in areas that could have actually made seriously good use of it. I think a rifle cartridge's popularity has little to do with it's capability or suitability for a purpose.

@@joelpalsson7711 Continental European cartridges of pre WWII didn't get much traction in the Americas. British cartridges got better exposure; but did not exactly take a lot of market either. Unless you were an American headed for the African continent to hunt you probably didn't even know much about them "foreign cartridges" until well after WWII.

    • @russellkeeling4387

There are really no 35 caliber cartridges that got the recognition in the US that they should have. I see that now the .35 Whelen is as popular or more so than it ever was before in my life. I would love to use a Remington 7600 in .35 Whelen. Talk about a rapid fire cannon.
