I didn't know the Thomas O'Malley song, but that's because I didn't grow up with it. All I had during the summers were VHS recordings and PBS, and Aristocats was not generally available. Had Robin Hood, Fox & The Hound, and most of the others. We didn't have the movie Oliver & Company, but we did have the soundtrack on LP, and we used to listen to it while playing on the Atari. The rest came out after I graduated or we were getting the tapes on a regular basis,.

OneBiasedOpinion I think i heard the other day about treasure planet having to compete with the first Harry Potter movie so was missed by a lot of movie goers.
It's a pity the musical was closer to the original novel, though - not because I think the movie is BETTER for changing things, but because it felt to me like trying to hit a "middle ground" of sorts didn't work... The real tragedy of the story, within the classic novel ,comes from the fact that the characters ARE very flawed (or in the case of Phoebus, loathsome) and they all destroy themselves in the end, but in the Disney movie Frollo in particular is a very different character, and his villainy level is actually a deep contrast with the inner goodness of Quasimodo, Esmeralda and the rest; take that away AND reinstate the original ending, and the movie becomes IMO less-focused and thematically messy as a result. Maybe if they'd made Phoebus the villain he was in the books the whole thing would have worked better, but... well, when you take out Esmeralda's original background, or Quasimodo's more savage character, or what have you then the message conveyed in the songs is kind of lost when you reinstate the novel's ending. I don't know that you can have it both ways with "Hunchback", TBH: the original novel is a magnificent piece of 19th-Century literature about the corruption of the French-Parisian legal state (and the wretched thieves known as *gasp* "gypsies!"), the Disney movie is a heartwarming story about the world becoming a more just place if those who do good can see the good in it and fight for it; each is their own thing, and while they share a title and cast they should be judged distinctly for their respective strengths and weaknesses. Try and meld them together, and it's very easy to lose the plot, not because there aren't things which can work when put together, but because you can't have your cake AND eat it too unless you strike a perfect balance - Esmeralda's lynching at the hands of the Parisians, for instance, loses its ironic meaning when she's actually an ethnic Roma, as opposed to the novel where she is actually a native Parisian stolen from her mother. Among other things... to each their own, and I'll admit some things where changed for the better (while I don't hate the gargoyles, I do think they're often out-of-place in the film tonally - especially when it can't seem to DECIDE if they're real or just figments of Quasi's imagination!), but as a whole the musical didn't do it for me. I prefer taking each as a separate piece, and judging them on their individual merits rather than trying too hard to mesh them together like they did there...
I really liked the 97' HBOND. Even its worst critics admit the score continues to be amazing. If it was edited to exclude the weaker songs "Guy like you" and "Court of Miracles", it would have retained its dark yet hopeful tone. The musical has a similar problem as despite the inclusion of extra songs, the only characters really fleshed out were Frollo and Quasimodo. Esmeralda and Phoebus's doomed romance is more believable but they were quite generic - Phoebus as the cynical captain with a conscience, Esmeralda as the streetsmart dancer with a heart of gold. Very 1980's rom com duo...
RedRoseSeptember22 Some people didn't like Tom Hulce as Quasimodo due to his vibrato notes in "Out There". I liked his performance as he brought an endearing wry quality to the character. Phoebus could have easily been the leading man, yet Quasimodo had the most defined character journey.

I think Just Around the Riverbend is also slightly underrated, not as underrated as Savages, but a close second. Whenever you talk to someone about Pocahontas, they always mention Colors of the Wind (which is of course an amazing song) as the go-to song, so all the other songs and snippets from the movie are lost behind the hype. Which is kinda sad to me, because despite the historical innacuracy, Pocahontas is and will always be my favorite movie

I'd have picked The Bells of Notre Dame as number 1. Its a 6 and a half minute epic that tells the opening narration of the film in musical form. Conceptually its INCREDIBLY ambitious, the story it tells is incredibly dark, with some insanely bombastic choir arrangements, and some incredibly poetic lyrics - "who is the monster and who is the man?". It has some call forwards to later songs, such as Someday and Hellfire, and it finishes off with perhaps the greatest ending to any song ever made. Seriously, if you don't get chills at the ending of the song, you're not human. It really is too epic to be allowed in a fucking disney film and completely shits all over their more commercial songs like let it go or a whole new world - don't get me wrong, they're great songs - but the bells of Notre Dame is something else entirely and it deserves some recognition.

The quality of the drawings/animation went out the window to the point that if you watch them back to back you'll wonder if they all had a stroke or something. And the colours.. It's like they ran out of neutral realistic colours and everything is super bright and vibrant but not in a good way... I do not recommend watching it. The only reason they made it was so that Quasimodo can find love too, there's no real storyline other than that. It's not a good enough reason to make a sequel.. Anyway.. Sorry, this was a bit of rant but I really LOVE Hunchback of Notre-Dame, and what they did with that sequel was carnage 😅

LOVE that song. I know most Disney songs in ASL and did research in to the lyrics in Hawaiian and memorized them so I could interpret them properly in to ASL. It's a pity the musical was closer to the original novel, though - not because I think the movie is BETTER for changing things, but because it felt to me like trying to hit a "middle ground" of sorts didn't work... The real tragedy of the story, within the classic novel ,comes from the fact that the characters ARE very flawed (or in the case of Phoebus, loathsome) and they all destroy themselves in the end, but in the Disney movie Frollo in particular is a very different character, and his villainy level is actually a deep contrast with the inner goodness of Quasimodo, Esmeralda and the rest; take that away AND reinstate the original ending, and the movie becomes IMO less-focused and thematically messy as a result. Maybe if they'd made Phoebus the villain he was in the books the whole thing would have worked better, but... well, when you take out Esmeralda's original background, or Quasimodo's more savage character, or what have you then the message conveyed in the songs is kind of lost when you reinstate the novel's ending.
I don't know that you can have it both ways with "Hunchback", TBH: the original novel is a magnificent piece of 19th-Century literature about the corruption of the French-Parisian legal state (and the wretched thieves known as *gasp* "gypsies!"), the Disney movie is a heartwarming story about the world becoming a more just place if those who do good can see the good in it and fight for it; each is their own thing, and while they share a title and cast they should be judged distinctly for their respective strengths and weaknesses. Try and meld them together, and it's very easy to lose the plot, not because there aren't things which can work when put together, but because you can't have your cake AND eat it too unless you strike a perfect balance - Esmeralda's lynching at the hands of the Parisians, for instance, loses its ironic meaning when she's actually an ethnic Roma, as opposed to the novel where she is actually a native Parisian stolen from her mother. Among other things... to each their own, and I'll admit some things where changed for the better (while I don't hate the gargoyles, I do think they're often out-of-place in the film tonally - especially when it can't seem to DECIDE if they're real or just figments of Quasi's imagination!), but as a whole the musical didn't do it for me. I prefer taking each as a separate piece, and judging them on their individual merits rather than trying too hard to mesh them together like they did there...
I really liked the 97' HBOND. Even its worst critics admit the score continues to be amazing. If it was edited to exclude the weaker songs "Guy like you" and "Court of Miracles", it would have retained its dark yet hopeful tone. The musical has a similar problem as despite the inclusion of extra songs, the only characters really fleshed out were Frollo and Quasimodo. Esmeralda and Phoebus's doomed romance is more believable but they were quite generic - Phoebus as the cynical captain with a conscience, Esmeralda as the streetsmart dancer with a heart of gold. Very 1980's rom com duo...

RedRoseSeptember22 Some people didn't like Tom Hulce as Quasimodo due to his vibrato notes in "Out There". I liked his performance as he brought an endearing wry quality to the character. Phoebus could have easily been the leading man, yet Quasimodo had the most defined character journey.

I think Just Around the Riverbend is also slightly underrated, not as underrated as Savages, but a close second. Whenever you talk to someone about Pocahontas, they always mention Colors of the Wind (which is of course an amazing song) as the go-to song, so all the other songs and snippets from the movie are lost behind the hype. Which is kinda sad to me, because despite the historical innacuracy, Pocahontas is and will always be my favorite movie

I'd have picked The Bells of Notre Dame as number 1. Its a 6 and a half minute epic that tells the opening narration of the film in musical form. Conceptually its INCREDIBLY ambitious, the story it tells is incredibly dark, with some insanely bombastic choir arrangements, and some incredibly poetic lyrics - "who is the monster and who is the man?". It has some call forwards to later songs, such as Someday and Hellfire, and it finishes off with perhaps the greatest ending to any song ever made. Seriously, if you don't get chills at the ending of the song, you're not human.
It really is too epic to be allowed in a fucking disney film and completely shits all over their more commercial songs like let it go or a whole new world - don't get me wrong, they're great songs - but the bells of Notre Dame is something else entirely and it deserves some recognition.

@Shruti Ghosh It is an awful and unnecessary sequel. The quality of the drawings/animation went out the window to the point that if you watch them back to back you'll wonder if they all had a stroke or something. And the colours.. It's like they ran out of neutral realistic colours and everything is super bright and vibrant but not in a good way... I do not recommend watching it. The only reason they made it was so that Quasimodo can find love too, there's no real storyline other than that. It's not a good enough reason to make a sequel..
Anyway.. Sorry, this was a bit of rant but I really LOVE Hunchback of Notre-Dame, and what they did with that sequel was carnage 😅

WHAT? It's one of the best and most unique Disney soundtracks BECAUSE of Phil Collins. The movie would not be the same otherwise.

LOVE that song. I know most Disney songs in ASL and did research in to the lyrics in Hawaiian and memorized them so I could interpret them properly in to ASL. Even though it's likely that no one will ever see me sign it except maybe my kid, who thinks it's obnoxious when I sign along with songs rather than sing them. 😜

I like the movie too but to me it’s nothing compared to the princess and the frog. That movie will always have a place in my heart. I want to say that it was a big part of my childhood but that seems weird since I’m still a child.
I'm so glad one of the songs from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" is on this list. The songs are as underrated as the movie itself.
The song they picked was wrong though. "Bells of Notre Dame" and "Hellfire" are definitely better. "Hellfire" might just be the best Disney song of all time.
