Indirect communication seems to be the norm in white collar professional jobs. The problem is that you can never get indirect people to say what they mean, even when you ask. It’s like they’re allergic to it. I always feel like there’s some hidden agenda when I’m working with them, and it gives me a lot of anxiety because I never know where I stand with them. I’m autistic, so I haven’t been able to work well in that environment, and I can’t seem to keep a job for longer than a year.

Indirect comunication opens the door to missunderstanding.

I met some indirect communicating people and their communication don't make sense or it takes longer time to be cleared what they are saying. Your video is excellent.

Indirect communication feels like it leans towards passive aggresiveness. I think there's a way to be softly/gently direct where you kindly say exactly what you mean.

Indirect communication definitely gives off a mean girls vibe.

I prefer direct communication. It gives a lot of clarity in work and thought processes. Indirect communication sometimes confuses me because I tend to create multiple answers in indirect communication. But I still my level best to understand indirect communication. Will learn with time :)

Indirect boss example 1 would fail with me. I’m not always guaranteed to even notice people walking by me, let alone notice what their face looked like. Family and friends know they have to make sure I know they’re talking to me and not some other person if they speak. And this situation described doesn’t even mention the boss speaking.

I know this is a old content, I wonder how do you come out of being the indirect communicator to a direct communicator often times during the transition period people are still stuck in the old style so becoming a direct communicator makes it look like I am out of character or being bossy

    Direct
    Example 1 - Acceptable
    Example 2 - Acceptable
Example 3 - Unacceptable, too long "Why do you think this idea works?"
    Indirect
Example 1 - Unacceptable, glare for what? It's like no respect for privacy. Just tell her, Hey Katie, let's back to work?
Example 2 - Acceptable, very polite way to ask without offending her
Example 3 - Acceptable, but better point out where to save time

Prime claim to prefer direct but I rarely ever see that. At most I see example 2 where communication is in question form vs. instruction form

A lack of direct communication can imply ulterior motives. I don’t trust anyone that won’t say something directly to me. Not just because there is ambiguity in what they want; which can come back to bite you later, but also because you have limited ability to properly interpret indirect communication. Meaning, if you interpret what they want wrong, it also can come back to bite you.

With indirect communication, the person may later say “thats not what I meant” …. and it may truly not be what they meant. It’s important for people to communicate in a way that leaves no ambiguity in anything. Thats the only way to avoid conflict and confusion.

Indirect communication feels manipulative with emotions. It leaves the recipient confused. Someone who suffers from cognitive distortive thinking patterns will be prey to this.

I have grown up with an indirection communication background, and when I went to Italy I find it very difficult to communicate with other people, I tried my best to communicate directly, but some of my friends judged me as passive aggressive, It’s very tiring to hear all these negative judgements on my character because I would internalize it and spend hours reflecting on myself. I don’t think my communication style has any problem, people from different culture naturally have different communication style, I think more tolerance from both ends is needed to make the communication work

Indirect communication is horrible. You are leaving it up to the message receiver to do your dirty work.

@@Nico-zu7jy hi Nico, it’s been about 7 months since this comment and I will say my perspective has grown. I value indirect communication and learned to be more playful. I see its benefits and I think it’s good to discern when to use both direct and indirect communication. I’ve worked a lot on my CBT efforts and realize it’s much more nuanced than the black and white thinking of direct versus indirect communication. Hope this helps.

Direct should be the only way, and you do not have to be rude about it. Direct is very clear with no room for misunderstanding or misinterpretation. Indirect leads to confusion, you can ONLY interpret and if you interpret wrong you will be the problem. So stupid. Indirect people please use your words!

Non direct communication is odd to me when I am so direct. As all women should be. I’m bad at reading a room. I have even badder delusions. Maybe I should get therapy now. LOL.

There is a difference between being direct versus rude. People in the West confuse the two. You can communicate directly without being rude or impolite. You just need to communicate formally.

Indirect communication is highly manipulative and deceitful. Absolutely dislike it with a passion. Just stop and say what you need or want. I don’t want to figure out your bs.. just stop!
