Century III Mall Demolition - April 3, 2024

Finally caught a break in the rain. Another two sections of the parking deck have come down, nearly separating it into two independent structures. We also get to see how little steel is actually present in the deck’s construction, making me wonder how it’s stood with vehicle weight on it all these years. With the complete lack of steel I-beams and sparse usage of rebar, the deck was constructed with essentially nothing but solid concrete. Perhaps this explains why the deck has been blocked off for so many years while the mall was still open?
Fencing has also finally been installed around a portion of the property perimeter. On April 1st, multiple people were onsite doing survey work inside the mall itself, including an asbestos crew. Some mild demo work was done inside loading dock C between Macy’s and the mall’s rear entrance. I was unable to see the extent of this work, but it appeared that the walls between the loading dock and the back of the former CVS Drugs store were torn out, but I’m not sure why at the moment.

Wonder what they’re gonna do with that land once they’re finished demolishing it.
