September 29, 2024 - Century III Mall Demolition
Century III Mall, Deckless.
The final, free-standing sections of the parking deck have come down. After a few days of cleanup, the first phase of demolition will be complete. Interior demo work appears mostly complete from JC Penney up to the elevator in the main court of the mall judging by pictures posted elsewhere, though it remains to be seen if demo of JC Penney will start next week or if they will wait until the entirety of the building has been gutted.

The last bridge has come down. Only a few sections of the deck remain, which are now fully detached from the mall. Stick around to the end on this one for an outtake. Could we see demolition of JC Penney start next month?

This one’s been on my list for quite some time. I finally had the opportunity to drive out to Glen Burnie, Maryland and film the Marley Station Mall in all its neon glory. While rather empty, the mall seems to be holding its own based on other videos I’ve seen, though I am concerned about its future. I hope it survives a while longer because malls of this aesthetic are in small numbers these days.

Only a small section of deck remains. While unconfirmed, it appears that there is only one bridge left to the mall at Entry B/Entry E to the food court. There are also now 3 holes in the walls of JC Penney, which makes me think that once the deck is gone, demo work of the mall will start there instead of near Ward’s and Sears as I originally predicted. I’m predicting we’ll have an answer by the...

Another cleanup day. More of the tile facade from Ward’s is being removed and saved. Kinda strange that the mall looks cleaner without the deck.

Well, maybe the deck will be gone by the end of September. On the plus side, it looks like they are saving the Montgomery Ward facade tiles.

The east bridge is down, which leaves only the two on the south side connecting Wards and Entry B (over Entry E) to the deck. Also, Penney's gained a window, and a wall cap came up missing on the mall.

Trying a slightly different vantage point. A lot of the debris has been cleaned up and demo work has resumed on the deck. The crew is approaching the East bridge to Wards and abandoned upper entrance to the deck. Over half the deck is now gone.

All the bridges on the north side of the mall are down. Only three remain; one on the east side of Ward’s, and two on the south side (Ward’s and Entry B, above Entry E, to the mall). There’s not going to be a great vantage point to capture the remaining sections as they come down. I’ll get what I can, but updates may slow until demo on the mall starts.

Numerous sections of the deck, as well as the bridge connecting Sears, have been dropped. I got bored of seeing nothing but cleanup the last several times I’ve been to the mall, so I took a drive around to check on the front side of the mall, as well as some other vacant buildings nearby. Most recently, DSW closed, and its labelscar is very visible, much more so than JC Penney. While I don’t re...

Clean-up day. Spent a lot of time at the mall this weekend but only got to see more clean-up of parking deck rubble. Looks like the bridges from the deck to the mall will stay for now.

Demolition is fast approaching the bridges connecting to Sears and Wards. The lantern light poles on the bridges have been removed ahead of demolition, so there’s a chance they were saved. Also of note, when reviewing the video, I noticed that the rooftop air conditioners have been gutted. Looking back through older videos, this process has been going on for the last month or so, and they seem ...

Tried to get some new angles. The next segment of the deck is coming down, and one of the electrical closets scattered around the mall got toppled in the process.

Thank You for keeping us posted . Ray in Moon Twp
Sad to see it go, so many memories.
0:04 Abandoned road.
0:03 Glad to know Pennsylvania has adopted crappy New York and New Jersey Roads. One of those roads was completely abandoned over there that lead to the upper deck of the parking garage. Horrific looking. Some states never learn. Legend has it, if you’re on a high speed pursuit, the potholes will take you out before the cops can.
The abandoned entrance was blocked off by Simon Property back around 2010 when the Macy's Furniture Gallery closed. By chance, I happened to film the clearance bars and lights 2 weeks before they were ripped down. I believe that was in the June 7 update. As for the mall road at the beginning of this video, the municipality and Moonbeam kept saying that the road was the other party's property. So, while the rest of the roads on top of and around the slag dump have been resurfaced, the only party to do any work at all on this road was Neiswonger Construction. While Pittsburgh roads leave a lot to be desired, this one is infamously bad because nobody can agree whose responsibility it is to maintain it. If you watched the end, some regulars have figured out the path to take that avoids the worst holes, and at the right speed, they basically float over the rest.
@@MrTsolar That’s not Moonbeam’s responsibility. As bad as a mall owner as they are, (They’re struggling to maintain West Oaks Mall in Florida.) Century III Mall road stretches well beyond the perimeter of the property. Since the municipality already maintains the first half of the road, they might as well just repave the second half if Moonbeam is going to be a bad owner. I’ve always hated how Moonbeam takes on projects they obviously shouldn’t have but I think the municipality should just repave it.
@@mikemancini313 I agree. The parcel perimeter on the maps stops in the grass between the road and the parking lot, but a few of the mall's parking lot lights share power with the streetlights. Wasn't this road originally built by DeBartolo with the mall? As for Moonbeam, as much as I dislike them, they finished what Simon started. Can't imagine how things would've been different had CBL or even Kohan owned Century III after DeBartolo. Washington Crown Center, owned by Kohan, has been getting kicked since 2020 (the first hit their own fault) but has somehow survived to date. Of course, they're set to lose a handful of stores soon, so we'll have to see how that plays out.
@@MrTsolar Yes. You’re right. This is a DeBartolo mall. DeBartolo built the largest mall in the world in 1976 in North Randall Ohio. Later became one of the largest abandoned malls in the world after it closed in 2009. DeBartolo also built the extremely large Florida Mall in Orlando that does very well to this day. (Ironically, another Simon owned mall.) Century III was the third largest mall in American when built. Sad that it failed but the Pittsburgh area has so many malls and shopping centers around today. Competition really killed it and moonbeam neglecting fire codes lol.
@@MrTsolar Washington Crown Center might get killed from competition from South Hills Village Mall once Von Maur opens next month. That mall has a lot of traffic thanks to the railway line close to it. That and all those other Pittsburgh Malls like the Mall at Robinson.
I wonder what they're going to do with that JCPenney sign that's just laying against the building. I wonder if they're going to sell it, or if they're going to destroy it with the mall itself.
It looks like that hole on the 2nd floor in JCPenney that damaged the canopy has gotten bigger!
That "road" is a tire-eating, suspension busting minefield!
It’s actually in better shape now than it was a year ago. The demo crew filled in a lot of the craters from the Sears entrance to 51.
@@MrTsolar I still take the extra time to go around.
Lewis Run isn’t far from the mall and does the same job. Might even be faster than the mall if you’re coming north on 51. Otherwise, Lebanon Church Road is better since the ramp to 51 South is a nightmare at times.
@@MrTsolar If you're coming from the intersection of 885 south and LCR it's tempting to use the mall road to avoid Lewis Run, especially since it's a double detour for the new turnpike construction. They don't want detour traffic on Coal Valley to keep the road to the hospital clear but Route 51 traffic backs up past the JMA center. It's a tough choice.
Do you think that they will carefully remove the street Century 3 signs, or do you think they will remove them by destroying them?
Be careful out there some guy tryed to attack me twice now out there 😅
I could probably imagine Century 3 Mall being destroyed and turned into Century 3 Center.
Unbelievable.
🥺
I can see that you filmed this even before Century 3 Mall closed!
Security still driving around the mall?
It appears so, along with surveillance cameras and the construction crew workers themselves. I wouldn’t risk stepping foot onto the property and getting in trouble, and I hope nobody else does, either.
the mall is still there and i would not go inside to explore because it is unsafe to go inside because it is full of asbestos
It also looks like they destroyed the lamp posts in the parking lot.
That happened back in mid-April.
No boom
Strange that the escalators in front of Macy’s were off and not the ones where Boscov’s used to be.
It was. I guess maybe that was so because those escalators are closer to the main group of stores and food court (which I totally missed the hallway to). Macy’s is on the quiet end of the mall.
Is this mall dead ? Where the people at
I'm hesitant to call it that, but yeah, quite empty, especially for a Friday afternoon. Maybe I should so the video gains more traction.
So sad to see this being destroyed after they let it rot for so many years. I grew up 5 minutes from the mall and spent most of my youth there.
So sad
Liked
When did you originally take this video bro?
Sometime in 2016. The original date stamps on the videos were lost.
Have you lived here through the Malls heyday friend?
Not through the heydays (wasn’t born then). My time at Century III was during the Simon days (2000-2012). I started coming back to C3 in 2017.
@@MrTsolar .....I see. Thank you for the answer. I do appreciate that.
Do you think that you would be allowed to fly a drone inside the mall through those holes in the wall on the 2nd floor of JCPenney, or would the demolition workers notice the drone and report it?
It would definitely get noticed
Drones are noisy, so it would be heard through most of the mall. The crew likely wouldn’t take too kindly to it being there. Neither would the law.
@@MrTsolar So you would advise against flying a drone inside the mall while people are working in there?
@@GabetheSlacker I advise against it unless you have permission from the demolition crew to do so.
@@MrTsolar Would you need to have permission to get inside the mall and see what's going on in there, or do you think it would be best if you just had permission to fly a drone in there?
How did they not hit the canopy when they destroyed that part of the wall on the 2nd floor of JCPenney?
The canopy took damage from the falling brick. Some of the metal framing that held the glass is bent.
@@MrTsolar Oh. Well, it's quite weird how you can barely see that JCPenney label scar on the mall, whereas you can very clearly see the label scar on the now abandoned DSW Shoe Store next to the mall.
@@MrTsolar I didn't really notice any damage to the canopy.
@@GabetheSlacker It is strange how the signage at Century III barely left scars at all. Sears, Wards, the Century III sign over the main mall entrance, and Penneys barely left a mark, yet Gimbels appears if the weather conditions are correct. I have a picture of it from the night the mall closed.
@@MrTsolar And you can also kind of see a label scar on the Old Mexico restaurant.
Word is that the inside of the mall has been getting demoed and cleared out now. Exterior walls should be soon. The two tier parking deck seemed to take way too long to come down, but it’s almost done. Maybe they can fill some of the endless craters in the road around the mall with the demolition materials.😢
There’s been evidence of that. In my videos, you can see transformers, electrical switch gear, and escalators removed and sitting outside the mall at various points during demolition. There were some pictures from inside posted on the C3 Mall Memories facebook page showing the mall being gutted of drywall, carpet, and ceiling tiles. JC Penney has been taken down to the steel and concrete inside. Hoping to get out there tomorrow and film an update. I was out of town last week.
Seriously...I haven't been to a Mall in 30 years. I absolutely loved them as a teenager. Many great memories.
There are still a lot of them out there, many still doing well. So far, the Pittsburgh area has only lost a small percentage of malls. There are still at least 5 in the area that are doing well, along with probably a dozen others not doing so well but still open.
And to think this mall, among many others, contributed to the San Francisco 49ers winning everything in the 80’s!
Century Mall where?
Pittsburgh Pennsylvania,
Did you grow up going to this mall?
Absolutely. Winrock and Coronado Malls were in walking distance.
Indeed. Spent a lot of time there shopping with my parents when I was younger. I think 2011 or so was the last time I was there until 2017 when I started documenting its decline.
I guess one day it will be gone.
Was a good mall for sure
Where are you going to get a view of the rest of the parking garage getting demolished?
Unless he goes past the marked off restricted areas on the other side where Dicks sporting goods is located, there’s no other spot like this from the top of the slag hill behind Pool City to get a great view.
It looks so neat & tidy. Amazing! That last pan of the whole mall nicely shows how massive the structure is. Wow.
Thanks Tim for the update
Jeez. This mall was 60% parking garage it seems!
It’s a big place. It took almost as long to walk a loop over/under the deck as it did the mall itself, and the mall is 3 floors on one end.
Moving along nicely
woulea be cool to tour this before demo is complete
Very sad indeed. Nothing lasts forever. Internet and Amazon killed all of social gatherings and shopping
This is what you get when Politicions send high paying jobs overseas. The middle class no longer has the income to support a once beautiful Mall such as this one.
Sad
Hold up, did they really place a bulldozer on a shipping container 😂😂 .. the parking deck is almost wrapped up. That sad moment when that crane arm smashes the first piece of century 3 mall wall is coming. What a beautiful mall. If people never destroyed the interior then just maybe, the mall could've stood as a memory of what giant malls looked like. They always say that they're demolishing for something to serve the community but like carousel mall san Bernardino or Fiesta mall AZ, after demolishing so many months ago, the land sits with sand piles
Thanks a lot, Moonbeam. 😡
It’s not like they can keep stores from filing bankruptcy. Malls are just obsolete now and nobody has the time or much disposable income anymore to shop at malls.
Funny how the first song is talking about goodbye.
We traded the mall experience for Amazon packages at our front door. Way to go, America.
What are they going to put their 0:56
Um that day has passed 0:24
How would you react if someone somehow got inside the mall through that large hole in the wall on JCPenney?
Well, for one, that hole is on the second floor, but as much as I want to see pictures of inside, that’s trespassing and is illegal. I advise against it.
@@MrTsolar Well, there are pictures of the inside on the Century 3 Mall Memories page on FaceBook.
There you can see what's going on inside the mall as they're prepping it for demolition.
But like imagine if someone climbed up with the ladder and went inside the mall through that hole on the 2nd floor of JCPenney.
The name of the demolition crew sounds so dirty. Neiswonger. Sounds like double entendre.
I remember going there as a kid when it first opened with my mom and grandma. It was the place to be. Vibrant and full of life on a Friday night. Now it’s all a memory.
I was there a lot through the 2000’s up until around 2011 or so when we quit shopping there. I don’t know why we stopped since JC Penney and Sears were the main stores we went to, but it wasn’t until 2017 that I returned. There’s another video on RUclips that shows the mall at night around 2009. If you search “Blaze West Mifflin Fountain”, it should come up. That aesthetic is how I remember Century III back then.
@@MrTsolar thanks for sharing!
