      I think Jack meant he'd rather the first book be a trilogy, not these Dune movies. While that may be good, his point was he wished they would've dived a little deeper in the first book rather than rushed through half of the first one AND through the second half+second book in the second movie

    • @vydave
      @vydave 2 года назад +15

      I think that many (not all), primarily those who have read the series, wanted more details about the world-building and plot. Regardless, now that we know it will most likely be two parts, I think Children of Dune can be adapted to form a loose trilogy.

      Hi, coming at you from 2 years in the future. I would also have preferred a trilogy for just the first Dune book. I feel like they skipped sooooo much of the 2nd part of the book. The first half of the book was understandable to put into one book because a lot of it is explanation of the world and stuff that can be put into 2-20 minutes of movie whereas it takes an hour to read in the book, but the second half of the book really picks up the pace. (Sorry I’m rambling lol)

    • @Logan_Irrelevant
      @Logan_Irrelevant Месяц назад

      The first book is separated into three “books” and Jack was hoping for each to be given time to breathe with their own film. Might’ve been cool but we got a cooler product from combining the last two.

      @@KxmpleteKxllapse most important information missing from the movie is explanation of why there are no computers and why Mentats and Navigators are a thing and the reason why Spice is so valuable.
      in Dune ALL computing technology above simple calculator are prohibited, because computers lead to AI and AI leads to war for survival.
      Mentats are specially trained humans that fill the function of computers, they can do calculations insanely fast and have basically a database like memory. They use drugs including Spice to enhance theyr minds and are very "valuable".
      And without computers navigating space is basically impossible which is where Navigators come in, on top of that jumping through interstellar distances would be impossible anyway, the way Navigators do theyr job is through Spice, because that substance allows certain individuals to see the future, which is exactly why contact with Spice enhanced Pauls "visions"
      all this together sets up the reason why Arrakis and Spice is the most important substance in the universe because no Spice = no interstellar travel

    I love how Jack has a better understanding of the production of movies, such as knowing the right actors, and having knowledge of lighting and sound. He also has many valid points supporting his opinions on just about everything, and as someone who has read the book as well as watched the movie, I can say that it’s hard to describe the book without spoilers, yet Jack did such an amazing job. I think that Jack would do really well reviewing open world movies such as Avatar, due to his deeper, more complex understanding of landscapes and lighting. I was especially impressed by how he realized the amazing quality of the sound, a feature that is often overlooked in a movie. If you’ve read the book and watched the movie, you know that the story in the book is much deeper, complex, and stretched out compared to the movie so far, for understandable reasons. But the creation of the movie was so amazing, and listening to Jack dissect this with such a deep understanding is so intriguing. For someone who claims to be dumb in so many of his videos, your intelligence is truly outstanding! You just specialize in different, unique subjects, and that’s a good thing. That’s what makes you so unique and entertaining! Great job, Jack, and I hope to see more content like this in the future!

    This is in response to jacks worries about the second movie. ‘Dune Messiah’ the second book is only like 100 ish pages long. It was originally going to be part of the first dune novel as like the fourth part, but Frank Herbert felt that it was going for too long so last minute he decided to make it a seperate novel all together. The second novel was written kind of as an epilogue to the events in the first dune novel. I can understand why Denis has chosen to do this because Dune messiah further explores key ideas that the first book brushes over. I think it’ll work well. @Anatol Dune Messiah is the end of Paul’s journey in these books. Books 3 & 4 are about Paul’s children and “the Golden Path.” Books 5 & 6 take place millennia later and are where the story really branches off. The story was supposed to be concluded with book 7, but Frank Herbert passed away with only a story outline. As someone who knew incredibly little about DUNE going into the movie, I thought it was a modern masterpiece. Villeneuve is one of the best directors working today (Blade Runner 2049 is one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time), and given the amount of information he had to throw at us, I was able to absorb it pretty well. Casting was perfect, story was engaging, set design and makeup were RIDICULOUSLY good, action set pieces were appropriately intense, and the whole universe felt very "lived-in," like the characters had definitely dwelt in these circumstances for centuries. The pace was a little slow at times, but nothing I couldn't handle. He's also set up a great deal of intrigue for part 2, and I for one can't wait.

      Thanks! I had the esact same question as Sean did in this video after watching it! I loved it but having read the book a handful of times I knew all the subtle references that I thought otherwise were not explained in the movie, and I was worried how it would translate to someone who didn't know the movie. Like Sean I also though the movie was lightning fast, but perhaps that's because every sentence was packed with subtle nods to the massive amount of world building that exists in the book. The densitity of detail in each line makes it seem fast - but perhaps this makes the pacing better for someone who doesn't know these references!

    It was funny being in the theatre and seeing who had previously read the book and who didn't. In the scene where Stilgar spits in front of Leto and the others and they do to, about half of the theatre laughed. The other half though (including myself) were just geeking out at the ultimate expression of respect that had just happened...
    Edit: I was really sad that they completely left the Navigators' Guild out of the movie (spoilers for the books btw, don't read on if you haven't read them yet).. The backstory of the Navigators is probably my favourite part of the books, their absolute influence in the universe and just their appearance is AWESOME. And the way the whole Empirium depends on them and they basically control everything cause without them all travel is impossible, it's just cool. Everything about them is cool.

There's just too much going on, and they wouldn't have been able to showcase them with enough overall description and attention to detail. They need a good chunk of time, just as so many other pieces do. I'm stoked to see how they depict the navigators, though! I bet they're going to be super creepy!! 😁

    I liked hearing Sean review this movie. I've seen this one, I've seen the movie from the '80s, and I saw parts of the show but I haven't read the book yet. After this I definitely want to read it-well after this and watching the new movie-and I would love to hear Sean review other movies. The thing that was funny about this was that he kept saying that the pace of the movie was so fast, but while I was watching it one of the things I enjoyed most was the pace and How slow I felt it was. I guess not knowing the much about the internal monologue of the characters really takes away from the development but if I'm looking at the movie as a unit in and of itself, the pacing really allowed me to just slow down and appreciate the grand scape of the environment being created, the world building. I also like to getting to see the subtleties of how the characters interacted with one another instead of having super forced and rushed conversations. Like it felt as though every conversation had gravitas and was impactful beyond the immediate conversation even into revealing the heart of each character. To go to Sean's point earlier about Jessica crying and freaking out and how that was all supposed to be internal I just want to point out I think the movie did a really great job of separating that raw vulnerability even if they weren't able to portray that it was her internal emotional state. If you notice, she's only incredibly emotional when she's by herself. Every other scene where you see her with someone else she is calm and collected. The closest she gets to being visibly upset in the presence of others is when Paul is about to be tortured, her voice trembles that she's talking to her "mother superior" figure. The second time is when she and Paul discover that her husband the Duke is dead and Paul is unraveling in front of her.

    Dune was amazing I don’t care what anyone says. Dune is like the lord of the rings. You can’t fit everything in one movie. That was the worst thing about the original. They tried to cram the entire first book into one movie. So this new dune is part one of two for book one. A remastering of sorts. A revival of a dead franchise is one of the best things. There are so many little details and there are reasons for everything that happens. I personally feel like If you don’t have a good prejudice of the series then you won’t fully appreciate it. There is so much history and world building as jack said. I recommend it to everyone who is even remotely interested. There are excellent summary’s of the original book I encourage it for sure

      Yes but no. I think it’s knowing what you should and thus can omit is the first step. I remember that there were some things in the book that I really really really wished had been included in the LotR movies.
      Also, a big sticking point for me is usually “are events in the correct order?” For instance, Prisoner of Azkaban everything is out of order and I hate it so damn much.
      Just my opinion as there isn’t really any right or wrong answer as any answer won’t satisfy 100% of the audience.

    • @garmtpug
      @garmtpug 2 года назад +2

      I think the LOTR trilogy was well done and tried to follow most of the books. They left out much but also padded it with the love story of Aragon and Arwen, which I did enjoy, but it was pure invention. Only in the Appendix did the author mention that they were married. The addition of Radagast the Brown was just dumb also. I think Tom Bombadil would have been a good addition and leaving out some of the interminable battle scenes.

Or maybe it wasn't that important for me? Anyway, as a teenager I loved the movie anyway. Seems like it really depends on a person. It's just obviously impossible to include all events in movie format and people can have different view on what is super important to show and what isn't.

    • @makasete30
      @makasete30 2 года назад +3

      Is this even a debate? Who actually says you shouldn’t omit anything from the book in the movie version?
      Seems like common sense. It’s the director and script writer’s interpretation. Some of the scenes Shaun talked about are rumoured to have been removed due to the length of the movie and are likely to be put back in any director’s cut.
      The criticism is usually what you choose to omit or not. And there is plenty of proof of things that CAN and SHOULD have been in movies from the books but were not.

    I'll be honest- Went in and saw the movie just a few hours ago without having ever read the books. I felt as though they established a *lot* of information very quickly in the beginning. Now, I don't know *why* the empire exists or how it got there or the full scope of the Bene Gesserits or the factions, but I had enough information that it felt like a good cold open- I had enough information to keep up even if I didn't have the active history of everything behind it.
    The pacing itself was... Interesting, in a good way. It felt slow?- there was a lot of talking, but the talking itself was a) framed gorgeously most of the time and b) genuinely interesting because it never felt like it went on *too* too long, which I think is an amazing feat. At the same time though, there were *moments* where it would get very fast, but it was only when necessary.
    I also managed to keep up with recognizing faces? Despite all the characters- I can't remember names for me with most movies/shows without subtitles anyways and *obviously* there weren't subs on in the theater, so I.. Don't remember most names tbqh but I got the gist of everything with faces/uniforms/vibes etc.
    I'm extremely invested in seeing how the movies unfold, if I'm being honest. I love(d) reading but I just don't have the time or patience for it, but the world building that's been set up is just... absolutely amazing.
    The only cons I have with it are minor and not ones that I say ruin the movie, more so just me noticing some less than exciting tropes and maybe slightly problematic (but likely unintentional) undertones, and that may have been in part the way the book was written as well, as old as it is.
    Overall, the movie was a 7/10 for me but definitely capable of getting up to a 9/10 once I get the context of the following installments.

    Yes, there are things that are missing in regards to world building, but missing that information never harmed the narrative, whereas getting bogged down in details and explaining things would've harmed the pacing. I actually misunderstood how mentats and the voice both worked as i was watching the movie, but i understood enough to move the story along, and i never had a moment like "oh they're having this conversation in order to explain such and such to the viewer", like i do in so many other movies.

      You hit the nail on the head with "conversations that feel like they're explaining such and such to the viewer". I get it, exposition is important, but it really is weird and unrealistic when you think about it. Imagine if every time you got inside a bus, the bus driver would suddenly start explaining the intricacies of how engines work and why he's driving a bus and how he learned to drive a bus after training for weeks and etc. Those types of conversations happen so often in movies, it was super refreshing to see the opposite in this movie. The characters already live in this universe, they are accustomed to all the weird shit that happens in it, they should only explain things to each other when it makes sense.

      I couldn't agree more. We were shown teasers of cool action sequences that won't happen until the second film. It feels like the movie spent so much time explaining the political climate, that it's leaving most of the excitement for the next movie. But the sound and visual design was enough to keep me hooked and eagerly waiting for the sequel.

    I watched the hobbit back when the movies were still coming out, and I never read the book prior. A couple of years after the last part of the Hobbit series came out, I finally read it, and it was so odd seeing bits and scenes that weren’t in the movie so it was kinda like “what’s this?” But overall I do have to say I enjoy seeing movies first to get a feel for the characters and the environments that the story is set in.

      I do think there are some movies that should be watched before the book since sometimes you get stuck on things that are 'missing', the original Lord of the Rings & this adaptation of Dune did that well, keeping the story strong but cutting out things that would make the movies long & boring (the Hobbit movies pulled from other Tolkien writings so reading the book alone before the movies was nice for me!)

  • @ladynightmare7401

    Your copy is the same as mine. I wanted to read it for years but decided to actually do it once the movie was announced. Agreed, this is amazing sci fi, especially for the time it was written. Beautifully envisioned and brought to life on screen in this adaptation. I agree with all of your criticisms, especially The Baron, hopefully they will make more of his character in the next movie. I remember everyone telling me this is one of the hardest books to read and that I was going in hard into sci fi by starting with this and I would struggle with it. I personally have never breezed through a book so well in my life which is a credit to Frank Herbert and his writing style. I cannot fault this novel and its influence is clearly visible in so much even outside of sci fi.
    I also speak as someone who saw the original David Lynch movie (1984). In contrast, although very visually pleasing, the 2021 remake is so much better in that it actually takes it's time with story elements. The last 20 minutes of the 1984 version is literally the rest of the book not portrayed in the 2021 version, so we get absolutely zero context on the Freman and their incredible sockety. Also, the 1984 movie tries to fill in the gaps of narrative by actually showing the characters inner monologues, which although necessary, is a very messy way of conveying context; bearing in mind that there was nothing in this version that wasn't effectively conveyed in a different style as the 2021 film shows us.
    I can't wait for the next one, but now you've said it goes into the second book too, means I'll have to get reading, but what a mess it end it on.
    On a side note, a will say that I prefer the mouth organ of the sand worms portrayed in the 1984 film, as that fits my vision better than the new ones, but I still love sand worms and want to ride one across Arrakis 🖤

    I didn’t read the book and went to see it with a friend today. I thought the movie was amazing overall, I really loved the story and the political tension between House Atreides and House Harkonnen. I understood the story quite well and began to understand of all the various factions like the Fremen and the Bene Gesserit. The movie was slow especially in the first half but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. The best part about the movie was the cinematography though, the movie looks stunning and every shot blew my mind.

    Ive never read the books, or seen the original movie.
    My thoughts
    I really enjoyed it. It was refreshing to see a Sci-Fi epic that wasnt focused on explosions and gunfights, and i say this being a huge fan of Star Wars. Yes, I liked the new movies. The pacing felt good, nothing seemed to drag on too long, but knowing its a book i could almost feel that more was going on than what they had the time to show. I kind of like the wondering about how things work in that world, and only being given snippets of info instead of paragraphs of explanations. Im not against that, i want to read the series, now. A couple of parts almost felt rushed, like they needed to hurry through them, but not having read the books, i dont know if thats how it really happened.
    Overall, i was pretty captivated by the movie, cant wait for part 2! Hope my two cents worth gives you a little insight!
