Part 2 has been confirmed. The opening weekend was pretty strong. That combined with the worldwide sales and HBO Max views were enough to get the studio to commit.
I'm afraid Part 2 will end up flopping no matter what. The first one didn't end on exciting enough a cliffhanger and let's be honest here, even if many viewers won't dare to admit it because of the surreal cult surrounding the franchise, there will be crowds of people finding it downright boring. And they won't show up for the sequel. That's probably why WB didn't allow Legendary to shoot both parts back to back. Dune is kind of like Margot Robbie: everyone talks about it, everyone loves it, but at the end of the day it just never brings in the expected penny.

Confirmed ONLY CUZ THEYRE FORCING IT. Movie sucks. Movie hasn’t even made really profit yet it’s only made 241Mil. Subtract the budget of 165Mil and you get 80mil profit not even enough to cover part 2. It’s a beautifully made movie- every job is perfectly hired and the actors are brilliant but THE STORY IS STALE
Me too and given a lot of the subject matter of the later books, I don't have confidence on this property being a huge smash hit commercial success long term, rumor has it that Villeneuve wants to also do Dune Messiah but after that he's done with the IP....I assume there may be a miniseries/whatever on HBO max that adapts the following sequels but I fear that like most great sci-fi it's too involved for general audiences, if it tiptioes the line between intelligent/dumb then it could work but who's kidding the larger populatin don't give a fuck, they just want mindless escapism since we're all working shitty jobs....jesus this is way too real...anyway it's like we're living with a short-sighted generation that wants instant gratification and doesn't want to think too hard since the brain might fall out....sorry for the "boomer' diatribe but that's the reality with entertainment currently and it's fucking dark, since we're nearly in the negative feedback loop of shitty fiction (also Boomers also would be confused, gen X would be accurate since they might have been the first to understand irony towards society on a wide scale)
I like that. I suppose that's what the director was trying to do. Wet people's appetite. I must say as someone who read the book first, I found the movie disappointing. Mostly because it didn't have the minute detail and personality of the books
When people say “it’s on hbo”, yes, but it’s totally different when watching on a huge screen with Dolby Atmos. Same reason I saw Godzilla vs Kong in theaters. Watching movies like these on streaming is like siping wine through a bendy straw. Also, it’s just fun to go out to the theaters anyway.
Oh absolutely. The sound is absolutely incredible. The ambiance and the aircraft buzzing was such a pleasure. My local theater has a great sound system that just rumbled my seat from start to finish. The score made the movie complete. Without it, there wouldn’t be a complete film.

Or even when visiting a new town/area you would expect some theme music to accompany it but it was often quiet bangs and vibrations...
Is Sicario not seen as one of his best movies? most people will do straight to Arrival and BR2049, Sicario was his first movie I saw and I thought the way he worked with tension was excellent.
I agree. I think Dune is his best work yet and Sicario is in 2nd place. I also really like Enemy. Blade Runner and Arrival are both wonderfully crafted, but I don't enjoy them as much as his other movies
I loved sicario. More than BR2049. I loved BR2049 but it's a movie that doesn't inspire me to watch it a second time. Not yet at least. But Sicario I have seen like 4 times already. Arrival I have seen twice. Ennemy I disliked. and that's about it what I've seen from Denis. He is great no doubt on that.

But for people who fell in love with Nolan over Inception, The Prestige, Batman, Interstellar, after the very good Dunkirk, that despite it's quality was ... very different from his usual fantastical projects, and a slightly underwhelming Dark Knight Rises, people (me included) were really hoping for the next movie that was "like Inception" and Tenet didn't quite hit the mark. It was way more confusing to understand than it needed to be (on many levels, not just because you can't hear/understand some important lines) and less visually spectacular than Inception. Though it still had some pretty awesome ideas and is still a great movie overall. I think Nolan is not someone who likes to repeat something just because it's successful and IF Studios do but pressure on him to "make another movie like inception", he will do his damned best to make it different and do something new. I think that is kind of what happened to Tenet, but to a fault. There is no movie like it but it could have used SOME slightly more traditional film making. I feel like if Nolan makes another Dunkirk, as in a movie that is excellent but doesn't bring the movie goers that "inception" or "dark knight" feeling of Cinema Magic, studios might start to be less willing to write him a big check for his next projects. Denis Villeneuve has kind of started to fill the role which Nolan had occupied for me, even if they are still very different movie makers. That said, I really want to watch Tenet again now. I haven't watched it since I watched it in the cinemas a year ago. It's still a really good movie in my mind.

@@calebwinfield1403 The Hobbit trilogy's fault was mostly on the studio who didn't give more time for Peter Jackson to prepare everything and just wanna rushed it. The studio were extremely greedy with money. Jackson did his best in making The Hobbit trilogy with the limited time he was given. He had about 1 half year in preparing LOTR while only got about 5 months to prepare for The Hobbit after Del Toro left the project, you could imagine how stressful that is for Jackson. It's the studio's fault, not Jackson

@@Fl0k5ser Also keep in mind that originally it was Jackson who would produce the film, and Guillermo del Toro who was going to direct two films. del Toro left the project due to studio malarkey...there is no way of knowing if the films would have been better under his direction, but they certainly couldn't have been worse.
This is a movie that I needed to see in a movie theatre. It was hard sci-fi, with complex characters, stunning visuals, and amazing music. Part 1 for me is 5 out of 5 stars. Absolutely amazing and definitely unexpected. I just want to rewatch it already to appreciate the movie once again.
@@lovescars mate there is litteraly no depth to these "complex characters" you say are in the film. Only good relationship in the film was the one with the son and mother ( even tho he is said to be the mesias (who needs no companion) he has one in the form of his mother which is unique. Part 2 is predictable
The characters felt like wooden cardboards for the entire film, there's barely anything to their personality, hell there wasn't even an attempt to showcase any kind of character development. Jason Momoa was the only likeable part of the first half, not the character he portrayed , just the actor himself. How am I supposed to care about these characters if they got nothing to work with?
Im hoping it does well at the box office. I worry it's too well made and intelligent for modern audiences to be "successful". Just look at Blade Runner 2049...folks now a days need brainless explosions and action..I hope im proven wrong
Enjoyed this film so much. Despite it having the feeling of incompleteness I felt more excitement about what could come for all the characters. There was no climax but it feels like a beautiful slow burn to get to something even more great. Knowing what is awaiting Paul and the other characters in the lore makes me anxious to see what happens next (fingers crossed). Beautiful film that submerged you into the culture of Arrakis.
The scene in the desert where he is tortured by the visions of future Messiah Chaos was strongly delivered in my opinion. I like the film, is heading the right direction at least, the way the larger than life scale of things compared with people was excellent too.

I enjoyed the film but I had very little idea what was going on most the time 😂. The whispered dialogue went right over my head. Hope there's a part 2.
@Oh My Oh my I'd give this movie an 8/10 because the cinematography, special effects, acting, and casting were consistently impeccable. But while the film brought the world of Arrakis to life, I also think that those two and a half hours were devoid of character development. The movie really was emotionally empty when focusing on each character and they didn't seem as pivotal to delivering a satisfactory storyline. The only character I was invested in was Duncan, who was still an underdeveloped character, and when he died, it didn't have the equivalent effect of losing a well written side character, Dr. Yueh betrayal just felt abruptly forced, and the antagonists didn't have as much screen time as I expected. After leaving the theaters, I never felt so ambivalent about a movie. I still loved the Oscar worthy visuals and effects, but also exhausted through 2 and a half hours of static story telling.
For some reason I really enjoyed seeing this movie with having not read the books and knowing nothing about it. I was really immersed in the world they were building and left the theater excited for part 2 so much so I wanted to buy the whole book collection, Can't wait for whats to come.
The only thing that was built is that the planet is hot, with gigantic worms that travel great lengths to eat 2 miniscule people, the planet has "spices" that are used to fuel spaceships and they use the planet to mine that spice, and there is a empire, wich we see absolutely nothing of.

Unfortunately WB wasn’t willing to sign off on a part 2 immediately, Villenueve wanted to film part 1 and 2 back to back like how infinity war and end game were, but WB wasn’t willing to take that risk. Good news is that the movie hasn’t been out for too long and has almost broken even. I think there’s a good chance we’ll see a part 2 in 2023
Jason Sledge that’s fair. From my understand depending on when WB confirms it Villeneuve wants to start shooting sometime in 2022. Now I’m not too familiar with exactly how long film making takes, but I feel like that would land a release either late 2023 or early 2024.
@@Bruh-ff2tw All depends how much FVX work has to be done. And rushing all the effect shots make it worse because then a dozen different effect shops are brought in - and sometimes that can be a mess. Not to mention it makes everything more expensive going that route. Obviously a movie like this has CG in every single shot. You can only rush it so far. Those poor VFX artists have their work cut out for them.
The cinematrography on Caladan was outstanding, the ships in the night and fog were breathtaking. The art department made the ships feel so fresh and otherworldly.
@@briexander8353 Star Wars was based off this book and directly took many aspects from it, such as the Emperor, Spice, Two Suns, controlling people with voice, desert planet, and much more. So ya its gonna have similarities to Star Wars.
The sound design when the first transportation ship rises from the large body of water while Paul overlooks it on a hill in Caladan is immaculate and throughout the film, it literally shook the cinema!
The Gom Jabbar scene was one of my favorite and thought Han Zimmer did a great job on the score conveying the intensity I felt when I read that part of the book.
I actually liked the incompleteness. It felt like a complete part 1. And that allowed them to never rush scenes which I hate there wasn’t any lightning quick cuts. You always hat time to digest it and understand what was happening.
I'm glad they opened the movie with it being Part 1. Allows then to tell the story they want to and end it when they need. It also gives people that expectation of knowing everything won't be finished in this movie. I think it ended perfectly though with Paul changing. Can't wait for more.
@@Dracobyte I think it’s almost a guarantee that pt 2 will get made. Even if part 1 isn’t a huge success on its opening weekend, it’s the kind of movie that will have legs through word of mouth. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s performing even better two or three weeks from now, even up through Thanksgiving.
Man, if part 2 doesn’t get made (but 9 Fast & Furious movies do??) it’s going to really suck. Really wish Villeneuve had locked in the studio contractually to do it. Please everyone go to see it at least once or twice in a theatre for cinema’s sake!
including advertising, a movie has to bring in about twice its budget to break even and that wouldn't count as a success. So we'll have to wait, how the movie performs in the U.S. and China
Mate, I saw it today in Australia. Opening day, Vmax. The sound was outstanding. My tip for sound at the Oscars. Best cinema experience I've had since seeing Avatar in 3d. In terms of adaptations, it's up there with Lord of the Rings
I totally could have watched another hour of it. The time didn't drag for me in the slightest. I pray that WB and Villeneuve release a full extended cut someday. Fingers are crossed. Bring on Part 2!!! Love your reviews. Very intelligent and articulate. Keep up the great work!
i absolutely agree! something similar to the lord of the rings, where you can get a copy with more of the material, like the banquet scene. it would be amazing and i would watch the heck out of it.
It's nice to see "Dune" done by a great director with the technical capabilities of today. Hopefully we will get part 2. When Lynch agreed to direct Dune it was under the agreement that it would be split into 2 films. But during production the studio pressured him into condensing everything into 1 film. After that experience he has refused to direct anything unless he has full creative control.
Yeah David Lynch is my favorite director of all time. I think the man is a genius. I think they did him really bad with “Dune” and he has said the studio butchered it in editing. It wasn’t the film he thought he was making. It’s sad because it is my least favorite of his movies.

To establish their motives, and also the world is really fleshed out. They did a really good job of helping us understand the politics and which groups are in power trying to do what. If you think it didn't have story I think you need to rewatch it.
@@jordanfelt5978 Na it didn’t. The larger conflict of Imperium vs. Houses wasn’t explained well. What was harkonnens motivation? What was the plot? Where was it going besides gamma-fiction chosen one prophecies and power fantasies? I know little about Dune, but the strongest conceit or the Dune Universe is the idea of Mentats. That wasn’t even mentioned. Mostly the characters sucked. Leto makes you care a little when he heroically decides to rescue those on the harvester. That scene was great. Nothing else stood out except amazing visuals.

I don't know if plot was that big in this film, at least to me it seems that it was supposed to be more character focused. And that's correct they didn't really talk about everything within the politics of the world. But they did do a good job of giving us a good sense of the main characters in their place amongst these politics in this universe. And I mean that was part one, so I presume there's going to at least be a part 2. With that being the case I imagine a lot of these questions will be answered then.

Plot is important in any great film. I just can’t stand the money grabbing with these part ones and twos. They could have made a good 2 hour movie with the 3 good scenes and 1 great scene. It’s like how they slaughtered the Hobbit.
Idk if I would say that’s 100 percent true since there are a lot of movies out there with a lot of directors and I’m pretty sure they’re more than a handful that are really good out there. especially independent directors. I’m saying this as a film student because I’ll be very nervous if I got a film coming out at and someone just compels me with other people they don’t view with high regard

I just went to see it yesterday. Small city of about 60k people, the room was packed and it was in the late evening when the shopping mall is closed so not many people stick around. I think it will have a good run.
Agreed on cinematography. The only slow part was a few times when spoiler: Paul and mom had put on their suits and only shots of them walking happened for a minute or two. But look at that complaint. A minute or two haha
This was one of my favorite books in high school. I was scared they would botched it like ender's game but it was awesome! The lore in this universe is crazy you should definitely read the book for the depth and motivations of why characters do certain things. There are some very complex ideologies that are hard to convey in a movie. On a side note, I have a hard time imagining things so it was so cool seeing all the heighingers and thopters come to life.
Finally a dune fan who understands they can't cram every single piece of lore and detail from the books into a film. I thought it was incredible and you are right some of the things you find in the book as too complex or would take too long to convey through film and some of the other fans of the dune books would do as a good a job of you at remembering that :)
I haven't read the books, so I watched it "blind". And I loved it. Personally I can't understand those who moan that "I did not understand anything! Yadayada", because the movie does make sense. It drops us right in the middle of things, and instead of asking us to to walk it demand that we run. People should embrace the uncertainty and question that rise while watching this (us non-readers ) . This ain't "spoon fed" movie, and I salute that.
The movie overall is beautiful and exactly how I imagined most of the universe. I just have such a huge problem with the lack of character development for Dr. Yueh. He is pivotal to the plot in my opinion. Could’ve used a lot more of him to explain a lot.
I was realllllly hoping we'd get the scene with him and Jessica where she almost figured him out. Another element that felt missing was Thufir being suspicious of Jessica. I understand they had to make cuts but hopefully we'll get an extended edition with another half hour of scenes.

I loved the movie, but I really didn’t like the screenplay overall because all the characters are flat with half their original character traits being excluded. Dr. Yueh’s entire story arc, Gurney’s connection to Paul and his Bard like background, Jessica’s badass personality that she had in the book, were taken out. Kyne’s was also a huge letdown because they took out all the interesting scene she/he has. ALSO, Thufir was basically cut from the story! He was integral to the book.
Total agreement I posted my take on the movie if you can find it in this massive comment section and I absolutely agreed with all your points here plus a few others they changed or excluded way too much from the book and that is a cardinal sin when doing Dune also ignoring the “weirding way“ which is what was the primary threat to the emperor, And why he had “plans within plans”
Totally agree, but to be fair, it’s not like the book really expanded on Doc either… Like, Herbert is AMAZING at world building and story-telling in general, but he frankly wasn’t the greatest when it came to flesh out most characters (Chany is a big example for me) Honestly, I prefered some characters in this movie than the books, like Duncan, who arguably does not do a whole lot of talking at all during the time he’s around…

Those who saw it in IMAX understand it was an experience of a lifetime, I read the book and I brought 7 friends of mine, we watch many films together, to all see it in IMAX. We still talk about it to this day. It was probably the best cinema experience ever, there’s nothing like it.
When I saw the shielded city I had the thought: This guy could pull off Call of Cthulhu. A film that I so far would have called unfilmable. After dune I REALLY want a Villeneuve Cthulhu or even mountain of madness. That guy understands scope, tone, score and CGI in a way I think few contemporary directors do
@Aaron Sanders fair enough but an Emmerich or a Gunn or an Abrams, might have the budget, yet they wouldn't be remotely able to create the right atmosphere and the correct style imo
@@sblagg527 would you elaborate? Because I think it definitely does. It's a sense of constantly not feeling comfortable. That sounds like a joke but it isn't. Villeneuves movies tend to make you feel at unease even when nothing really is happening, which is exactly what lovecraft should be like, granted it still needs to pitch up the horror at some places. Maybe a co-op with some other director who knows cosmic creepyness, but theres barely even a hand full
I feel like his name carries the same weight as Nolan, even more so. If there’s a movie coming out and you know it’s being directed by Denis, it’s going to be nothing short of a spectacle.

@@ElricZ dune hasn't done very good rn. At least not what's needed to be profitable. For example in china there's some other movie there too rn which made like 800 million in 23 days and Dune's performance in China isn't great and it's expected to make around 30-40million at max. China is one of the biggest markets so it isn't very promising. I really hope it does well tho.

The size and scope of this film is unreal. It’s like how the hell do people make films like this with all the ships coming and going. The explosions. It’s crazy! Definitely one of the best films I’ve ever seen.
So glad to see that Chris likes dune for the scale it is made in. Denis is definitely in my top 10 best directors of all time. His movies have a strange yet so enthralling sense of emotion in them, and a vibe that there is more to the universe and our surroundings then we are led to believe on. Can't wait to see Dune in 1080p!♥️😅

I love Nolans movies (Interstellar, Dunkirk) but the new Dune (and also Tenet) is the worst movie I've seen in a long, long time. Incoherent bombastic bunch of scenes with cliche characters even a 5-year old would find boring. 🤪 Spaceships and bombs yet swords and knife are primary weapons. 🤔 Blatant war propaganda with oil pardon "spice" and arab pardon "muslims". Go see D Lynchs Dune. 10 times better. If not 100. PS Chris calling it "masterpiece" must be on some super strong drug. Maybe spice? 😁
Hans Zimmer's score captured the very essence of Dune and its landscapes. The film itself was very brilliant as it is, and emphasis on time passing at certain moments, and the incredible use of complete silence. But the music, my god, it was unlike any film experience I've ever had.
As much nostalgia I have for David Lynch's DUNE, Denis' DUNE simply outdid what came before. I'm not very religious, but this DUNE evoked a biblical feel to me that the others don't. It evoked a deeper significance than just the surface story. The scenes with a robed Chani on the desert and shots of the Fremen in prayer just made this DUNE feel even deeper to me.

Anyway, I didn’t say it was “book accurate” it just did a far better job of developing the characters than this new one did. The Sy-Fy Channel mini stayed closer to the book than Lynch, but the budget was only slightly better than Days of Our Lives which made it hard to watch.
I love how Villeneuve kept the weirdness of dune as there is no aliens except for the sandworms he manages to portray how humans look and act in 10000 years each having a evolved differently but still being human and the ornithopters are spot on.
I almost jizzedd my pants when I saw the ornithopters. Exactly how I pictured it in my mind when I read the book so many years ago. So fortunete that Villeneuve was faithful to the books
It feels like we're in a perfect timeline just realizing that Denis directed this film because it could have been anyone or any studio that didn't care at all but here we are and it's unbelievable.
You’re very correct, I was in a similar position when I saw it in theatres but after watching it again months later it’s very easy to follow. I suggest another watch.
I watched many “Dune lore” videos before seeing it…definitely helped understand the movie and book so much easier…I suggest the channel “Nerd Cookies”…she explains what all the weird stuff means.
I really hope Hollywood gives him the credit he deserves also. His works so far have been stunning. I have no problem believing he could ultimately be hailed as one of the greats.

I don't understand that many don't hear the music in the movies. Many movies are bad but the music is Awsome! But people don't hear the music they just say the movie is bad but listen to the music its awsome!
Zimmer's said his goal was to make the movie to sound like nothing from Earth or even relatable to Earth. He wanted it to be completely alien. I think he did the exact opposite. Bagpipes, Phrygian dominant scales and Mongolian chanting. Epic fail..
Visually every scene is like concept art come to life. Just beautiful lighting, color and scale (something already expected from Dennis, still, I feel this is his best work yet). It literally feels like every scene is perfect. I did think Hans Zimmer did a great job with the score filling the movie with personality, but I did find it distracting at times, even if most of the time it was rather subtle. I thought the story and the characters with all the factions, religion and politics were very interesting. HOWEVER, this movie is SLOW, and this comes from a guy that is not a big fan of bombastic movies like those of the Fast & the Furious franchise (I do like the first 2). It was weird, cause I came out of the theater without having anything bad to say about the movie, yet, I was sleepy and felt a bit tired (which is not the best of signs). All I can say is that it is an ABSOLUTE cinematic masterpiece but it is slow, slower than Bladerunner 2049. When action is present it absolutely delivers but is clear for me that the biggest role of this film is to make a giant setup and introduce you into the world, religion and politics of what hopefully becomes a franchise. UPDATE: In response to some comments below and getting ahead of myself for (possible) similar comments in the future, I want to clarify: I DON"T THINK I COULD HAVE MADE THE MOVIE BETTER (that's why I didn't have anything bad to say about it). Is the pacing of the movie faster than the book? OF COURSE, but that's expected because movies don't have the same amount of time for exposition and to cover all the details. On the other hand, movies are great for showing instead of saying, and I think Denis makes a great use of the medium in that regard. THAT BEING SAID, that's the problem with Dune, it has a lot of lore; details and exposition that you might enjoy on a good read but that does not necessarily translates as well on film. So even if I think that the movie is a great adaption, TRUTH IS I felt it very slow. Even if I liked what I was watching, I came a bit tired out of the theater (It is what it is, your experience might be different and I respect that).
I shouldve waited for the second part to come out then watch it all together. Nonetheless, its a great movie, the scenes the sounds, the visuals, ughh goosebumps.
Slow? Compare to the book, this was going at mach 8. There was so much content, information, dialogues that were cut. They didn’t even explain what a mentat is. So if you haven’t read the book, it might be slow but you guys missed so much.

It is truly beautiful and stacked with fantastic actors giving their all. I hope it inspires people to read the books so they can get the full depth and breadth of Frank Herbert's epic story as well.
I'm 42 and never read the books but after watching the movie I am planning on reading the books now. I really loved the movie and it's got me wanting more.
The film never dragged for me. It was slow, but the pacing was perfection. Set after set, dialogue after dialogue. Reading the book over again before the film, I absolutely loved part one.
Agree 100%. I'm usually a fan of dense high-concept fiction, but I've had a lot of trouble getting into the book. This movie enthralled me and I'm committed to reading the full book now.
Well, I did the decent thing and paid my hard earned dough to watch this in a movie theatre so as to support the vision of some french guy who probably couldn't give a colloquial deffication about me. Did I enjoy it? Almost. The f-ing 'emergency exit' signs were shining green pictograms in my face from two different angles really brightly for the whole duration. And then stupid a-holes kept getting up and leaving the theatre to service their bodily functions only to return while casting shadows on the screen. The sound was good though. I went to a new cinema for this film because I thought it would be better than the one I usually go to. That one never cleans the projector room glass / screen. Not sure which, but there is this dirty smudge right down the middle of the picture. Not sure why I bother - I've got a big TV and all I have to do is wait for this to be streamed. Seriously though, if actual cinemas want to persist they need to up their game and stop taking the piss out of their patrons. I want to buy into the whole romance of the silver screen / shared experience thing but really - meet me half way. Or die. Either way, it's not my problem.
I just got back from seeing this in theaters and, yeah, I was floored. It's visually gorgeous, technically brilliant, and from a story standpoint still compelling. If Denis doesn't get his Part 2 I'll be so disappointed. I'm still salty that David Fincher didn't get to finish the Millennium trilogy, but this get put right up there next to it if it goes incomplete.

A+ from a Dune fan, it is borderline perfect. EDIT 2: I just realized the Butlerian Jihad wasn’t explained or mentioned. This is what I think one of the core pillars of why I love Dune. The idea that computers are banned and then the consquences of that shaped all aspects of human civilization. This idea is what hooked me into Dune and why I love it. Curious how those unfamiliar with the lore will receive the movie. EDIT: To clarify; by “borderline perfect” I think I mean for a movie adaptation of the first half of the book. Movies have constraints, it’s a different medium. Also the larger the budget the more accessible it needs to be to new audiences.
@@jamesoloughlin I wouldn't say butchered. It just cut a lot of the buildup to the Harkonnen plot. You go through several chapters of tension knowing their is a scheme in place but not knowing when it gets triggered. The film just kind of gets to the point quicker.

The *definitive* Dune, at the right time with the right people and right techonology. If only they could make it á la Harry Potter, (a film per book), because even with part II, there's still *a long way to go in the saga* Crossing fingers to see if we get at least Dune Messiah.

Speaking as someone who knew very little about dune, what an incredible opportunity they have to build a new, beautiful cinematic world. Stunning visuals and audio and was much more complex than a marvel or new Star Wars. I deeply enjoyed this movie.
Saw Dune last night in a sold-out IMAX theater. Modern sci-fi masterpiece: 10/10. Atmospheric, dreamy, taut story, interesting characters, well acted, *superb* direction. Denis Villeneuve is the best thing going- Part Two MUST happen

I just saw it in IMAX and it was aesthetically Fantastic. Epic in scale, sound, visuals and the acting was pretty stellar. As someone who knows very little about this sci fi classic (although I have the books) I appreciated the vision executed here. You can immediately pick up on the intense and loaded world of worlds backstory with a helluva lot going on, but this film conveys this universe in a way that makes it digestible and understandable for someone coming into it blindly. I also hope it does well, because if so, we’re in for a SAGA, akin to Star Wars!
Just watched this in IMAX and it was honestly the most breathtaking film I've ever seen in a cinema, I watched venom this week and it was so dissapointing and I was almost having second thoughts about watching another movie in 2 days but all that evaporated in the first 2 minutes. 100% from me man you gotta watch it preferably in IMAX or in a Dolby theater.
It’s one of those movies where it has a good cinematography, good acting, and visuals effects but the story was boring. Seriously, how do people enjoy this ??
The thing that sucks most about trying to get a piece of art like this out there is that no matter how digestible you try to make Dune, my mother will watch through the whole thing and not know that main characters name, and probably give it a bad review because it hurt her brain. Too many people have trouble following it, which is completely understandable but sad.
Complex movies take a certain amount of effort from the viewer to keep track of all the story's moving parts, but can reward them hugely for doing so. It loses some people along the way, but the Godfather had a complex plot and that was recognised for the great work that it is, so there is always a chance that amazing and ambitious movies like Dune can cross over into the mainstream.

As a long time Dune fan, I was blown away by the reverence Denis and the cast and crew had for the original material. The scale, the emotion, the humanity as well as the alien quality of this world was perfect. There are a couple aspects I was slightly disappointed didn't make the cut, but this film was all that I hoped for and more. Here are the few things I missed from book to film: (and of course, I know they can't fit everything!) . . I do wish there had been the "traitor" plotline. In the book it's a large thread of tension that it is known to the Atredies that there is a traitor in their midst. Of course, we do see Dr. Yueh betray the Duke, and though it was as powerful as it possibly could've been with what info was given, I can't help but think the impact could've been even greater had there been even a few minutes of Theufir's mistrust of the Lady Jessica as the traitor, and also those moments between Jessica and Yueh where she *did* see unusual behaviors, but ended up explaining them away to herself - so human. The stakes were already high, but to have that be known I think would've hit a bit harder. I understand why they didn't add this part into the film, but I really wish we could've finally seen the dinner scene! I thought that was a wonderful moment to show the powers that be on Arrakis, and also the sharp wit and insight of both Jessica and Paul in moments of intrigue. It's clear in the film they reduced the time between their arrival on Arrakis and the ultimate betrayal by the Emperor, so I'm sure that would've felt very out of place and dropped tension. Although the Bene Gesserit are shown as very powerful, and I think the voice is portrayed *perfectly* I do wish there had been a few more visual clues as to the mastery of the "soft sciences" of the BG. Subtle hints that Jessica is reading the minutia of peoples faces and expressions, and maybe a close up on her face to indicate that she knows they're lying, or that she understands more than just the words they're saying. Some people really liked the change in the death scene of Liet Kynes, but I think that was a missed opportunity to show more insight from that character regarding the ultimate dream of the Fremen to turn Arrakis into a paradise. I know it was mentioned, and I liked the " moisture garden room" being moved from the palace to Kynes' place. But I think there could've been insight gleaned in an interesting and organic way had they taken her stillsuit and let her wander the deep desert seeing visions and re-experiencing memories like Kynes did in the book. My two cents... but ultimately I adored this movie, and think Denis was the perfect person to bring this to life.
Completely agree! as a fellow long time Dune fan, I have been waiting to see this movie for ages and was blown away as it was magnificent! As you have pointed out, I wish the movie was just a bit longer to include some of the parts of the book you mentioned especially the whole traitor plotline and some of the character dynamics while on Arrakis. I feel the invasion came far too quickly without getting enough time to see them settle, almost as if there were a few scenes missing. Obviously having said that, I completely see why they did not include it. Personally, I feel this could have easily been a 3 hour movie like one of the LOTR movies and then have a 4 hour directors cut :D. I desperately hope there's a directors cut or a longer version.
As somewhat of a nerd I couldn't help getting hung up on the crysknife scene. They never draw blood! Also there's a guard right behind them who is not supposed to see any of that. Agree on missing the traitor plotline as well, it's probably THE most important thread for this first part and they completely glossed over it. Breaking Yueh paints a picture of how horrible, horrible people the Harkonnen really are too. Also it leaves Hawat with nothing to do so he's just furniture for this film.
I completely agree as well, but I got the feeling that the traitor plot was cut quite a bit due to time constraints. I wanted to see more of Giedi Prime, and Feyd Rautha, (Sting's character), in the gladiator pit killing slaves, but that being said, I hope more of the world is covered in Part Two.
@ANTHONY It was my first experience with this universe yes and I thought everything was pretty clear for a newbie like myself and of course I left immediately wanting to see Part Two. It's Denis' most ambitious film so far.
Masterpiece?? I wouldn't go anywhere near that far. Saw it yesterday, and well, it wasn't bad but I was left with a kind of "meh" feeling. Not much happens when you think about it...there are at least 20-25 minutes that could have been trimmed off the film to get further into the story to get viewers more invested and reach a better ending point for the first half.
@@sblagg527 just finished the movie , the first hour almost feels like they were trying to give a game of throne taste , and the awful dialogue delivery, many times they keep on talking and just go whisper mode really pissed me of , my point of view is don,t try to add flavour , if your has weight people will see it , only things I loved about this movie is the core story , background music(minus the *cough* *cough* snyder screaming wonder woman theme) , really felt bad when the father dies , a ton of plot hole , certainty not a masterpiece
I went in on this movie BLIND... I didn't read the book and I didn't played the game and let me tell ya, I was flabbergasted by the movie by the end of it. Easily movie of the year for me.
Did you understand it? People keep telling me you have to read the books & research a lot of the lore, and even after all that, you still won't get everything unless you're a diehard Dune fan. I'm hoping that's not true.

@@corey2232 I never read the books but the plot was easy enough to follow. Some questions I had that may need outside research, but nothing too bad that makes you go "wait wtf is happening." Main issue though was sound; it was hard hearing the whispering dialogue in theaters so I missed out on some names and stuff, although it was likely my theater and subs on HBO max can fix that.
I feel like it should be a series like GOT, its hard to feel bad or hate the character as much as we should with too little character development, that being said it did spectacular with the amt of time it had imo.
The last half of the book is what made the story for me so if part two sticks the landing, I feel you'll get a lot of the character building you're seeking. It's incompleteness is the worst thing about the movie for me.
Just like in so many shots the director shows you a gigantic scenario, and the humans in the background feel tiny and meaningless. That's what I think is the point of the story. It's not really about "caring" about these characters so much. It's about the journey they take, and how it influences the universe.

Just saw it in the theater and I loved it! Big, gorgeous, and expansive. I first read the books in the 80’s, and now want to read them again. I thought the exposition was subtle and used very well.
Warner Media CEO kind of confirmed the sequel is happening: "Will we have a sequel to Dune? If you watch the movie, you see how it ends. I think you pretty much know the answer to that".
What do you expect her to say? She didn't say yes either did she? Do you think she's going to come out and sabotage the box office on opening weekend when the company is struggling and being taken over by Discovery by saying something like we'll see how it goes? Plus do you want a list of DC films WB "greenlit" formally announced and then abandoned? It's long.
Saw it in IMAX and the sound design is absolutely nuts. My friends thought it was too loud, but honestly if my hearing was damaged at all, it was worth it.
Dune had a gargantuan scale that was a feast on the eyes in Imax , complied by hans zimmer ethereal soundtrack, a brilliant origin for Paul Atreides and i wasn't expecting the level of action that was In the film , only downside is that it feels like one quarter or half of the book , but it's definitely up their as one the best films of the year, Glad to hear you enjoyed the last duel , currently my favourite film of 2021 , looking forward to your review of the film .
It actually covers about 60-70% of the book. Which is great because if Part 2 ever comes out (and it really may), Denis will be able to put more stuff into the movie.
Easily one of my best SF movie of all time. It's a true dedication for Art. You can dislike it for many reasons, but from an artistic aspect it's quite a masterpiece. I almost forgot what was cinema, what Art even, feels like...
Honestly i was expecting that the PROLOGUE from the 80's director's cut would have been added to the story, understand how and why Ai and ROBOTICS was banned from the society and how that forced humanity to develop mind skills is crucial to undestand DUNE universe. Another point are the dialogues, looks like the Dir cutted lots of content to fit a more fast paced movie. Overall it was a good experience, although i was expexting a more deep sci-fi piece of work with longer shots and a more cerebral ride.
Showing immense scale is great and can be awe-inspiring, but it doesn't make a great movie. I think most people are entranced at the scale and implied depth than any actual character or story depth presented.
This movie was just incredible to see on the big screen. I decided to read the book before going to see the movie and I’m so happy I did. I’ve fallen in love with the book so I appreciate the movie so much more. Btw I really want to see the last duel but I can only see it like 5 places in my entire country, and I’d have to drive for a long time so that’s a bummer. Looks really good!
@@erwinsmith9473 hi there. It is indeed a lengthy read but if you are good at reading for long periods of time then you should be fine. I spent about a month myself because I’ve only really been getting into reading recently so I don’t yet have the patience for long sittings haha. A bit of help though: the book is split into three parts and if you want to read up to where the movie ends then you should read the first two parts. That’s maybe the first 400 pages. So once you reach part three then you’re good to go.
@@fyessssss haha it’s a long book so I get it. It’s quite complex as well with the amount of new concepts being thrown at you so fast, but I managed to really get into it and understand most of it pretty fast so that’s good.

Well we had to fight to get it uncancelled after season 3. And TBH I kinda wish it had died there, because the last 3 seasons have disrespected the source material.
A very big and important storyline is left out. Jessica is suspected of being the traitor, and Leto goes along with her being watched, but he secretly tells Paul that he trusts her completely. This is important because the whole reason that Jessica had a son, was not to produce the Kwitsatz Haderach, but because she loved Leto. She didn't know that she was the daughter of the Baron and could produce the Kwitsatz Haderach, yet they portray her as being arrogant and ambitious. I hope they correct this in part 2.
I really hope this does well. Lord knows this wouldn't be the first Villeneuve sci fi film with glowing reviews that doesn't do well, and as you mentioned, this year has basically been a slaughterhouse of great films bombing at the box office, as hollywood keeps sacrificing movies to see when audiences will finally come back to the theater. But I have faith that they'll recognize that the potential of this franchise (with Denis at the helm) far outweighs the performance of a single film
Hopefully in the sequel he will since he actually died near the end of the book. It's better if he was shown fighting alongside the battle to increase his screentime contrast it to the counterpart in his book with short exposure.
The books don't go too deeply into the personal lives of the harkonnens, mostly preferring to leave them as a political and ideological enemy rather than making one singular character or family the primary antagonist.
Saw it last night at the theatre. Dune was everything I hoped it would be, but much more than what I expected. For a non-book reader, I would say that they took the best parts to introduce key elements, characters, factions, machinery, and world settings, to keep the pace of the film coherent. It was a healthy dose of gritty sc-fi, with beautiful imagery and (can I say?) horrific elements. For me, the film could’ve gone on another 2-3 hours to see the rest of the story. As a book reader, this is where I feel that they should’ve gone the trilogy route to flesh out the back story. As an example, I would’ve loved to have seen more of the Bene Gesserit and Paul’s training in the ways of the Bene Gesserit. However, what you get to see of the Bene Gesserit is amazing and I want more of it. It beats Star Wars in that aspect in my opinion. You could nitpick the film from days on end but still be completely satisfied with what Denis brought to the table. I also hope that we get a part 2. It would be a real shame, and a terrible tease, if we didn’t. Did I mention Ornithopters? You’ll think X-Wings looked cool until you see the Ornithopter.
Ornithopters were based on a hardware/software emulation of dragonflies. A real dragonfly can fly backwards, sideways, hover, make sharp turns, and even fly upside down. They can change the angle and shape of their wings in real-time for more flow, creating energy efficiency and greater speed. They can actually stop beating their wings and not lose altitude due to micro adjustments of their wings. Yes, they are amazing. Herbert never explained the full extent of Ornithopters other than they flew like dragonflies. One limitation would be high G turns, but humans of the Dune Universe are vastly physically superior so they could take those G forces without a pressure suit. The other thing is that Ornithopter technology is clearly Ixian in origin as you must have a computer running complex software to make these calculations in real-time. These computers would be in a gray area according to the Butlerian Jihad, but overlooked because of the military advantage. The Ixians could rationalize the flight computer as claiming it was "dumb" and only handled avionics and was not AI.
@@carlo0143 What kind of sci-fi do you like? There is the option to read Frank Herbert’s Dune but it can be a challenge for some readers. The world building, political aspects, and the introduction to characters is very in depth before things get much more interesting. I’ve heard some folks mention the film to be like a sci-fi version of Lord of the Rings or, probably more akin to Game of Thrones. For me personally, Dune is the Star Wars I always wanted to see. I grew up with the original Star Wars trilogy but Dune is grittier and horrific imo.
I ended up watching this on hbo max this during my lunch breaks at work. Thinks have just been too busy to get to the theater. I loved the movie but it had two major problems for me. The volume was all over the place. I ended up needing to put on headphones to be able to hear conversations. The other was Lady Jessica. One minute she is a strong character and then she becomes extremely meek and has a mild breakdown (understandably) and then she finds her strength again, only to lose it shortly afterwards, and the cycle would repeat. It was extremely inconsistent.
I read the first 6 books in Frank Herberts original sci-fi series when I was 11 or 12 in the early 2000s. My grandpa passed down his tattered old book to me and I instantly fell in love with world Arrakis and it’s inhabitants. The Jordanian dessert used in this movie is what I saw as young boy flipping through those pages for first the time.
I still think it should've been a miniseries. That way, you force the studio to commit to telling the entire story over the course of a complete season. 10 episode, one hour each would be enough to tell a good story with the right amount of depth.
I saw it in theatres and I was blown away by this film. I've never seen a book to film adaptation that balances world building, character building and still gives you plenty of quiet and immersive moments like this did. The last time I felt this immersed into a world was when I watched Arrival and before that Spirited Away which I watched in 2004.
The only criticism I heard was it was "slow" which is a shame that we as an audience are literally trained to watch MCU level of BS action per minute movies that anything slower is passed as a criticism. This movie was a visual FEAST. I was looking at the screen like every minute with pure awe. Each frame is wallpaper worthy.

It is a beautifully filmed movie and well-acted. The pacing of the film killed me but I can see the director is just developing something bigger and full of detail.
Part 2 has been confirmed. The opening weekend was pretty strong. That combined with the worldwide sales and HBO Max views were enough to get the studio to commit.
I read that part 2 was going to be theatre exclusive. Not sure if that is true though.
@@bighands69 The studios are going to try everything they can to get people back into theatres in the next year, so it wouldn't surprise me.
I'm afraid Part 2 will end up flopping no matter what. The first one didn't end on exciting enough a cliffhanger and let's be honest here, even if many viewers won't dare to admit it because of the surreal cult surrounding the franchise, there will be crowds of people finding it downright boring. And they won't show up for the sequel.
That's probably why WB didn't allow Legendary to shoot both parts back to back. Dune is kind of like Margot Robbie: everyone talks about it, everyone loves it, but at the end of the day it just never brings in the expected penny.

Subtract the budget of 165Mil and you get 80mil profit not even enough to cover part 2. It’s a beautifully made movie- every job is perfectly hired and the actors are brilliant but THE STORY IS STALE

Me too and given a lot of the subject matter of the later books, I don't have confidence on this property being a huge smash hit commercial success long term, rumor has it that Villeneuve wants to also do Dune Messiah but after that he's done with the IP....I assume there may be a miniseries/whatever on HBO max that adapts the following sequels but I fear that like most great sci-fi it's too involved for general audiences, if it tiptioes the line between intelligent/dumb then it could work but who's kidding the larger populatin don't give a fuck, they just want mindless escapism since we're all working shitty jobs....jesus this is way too real...anyway it's like we're living with a short-sighted generation that wants instant gratification and doesn't want to think too hard since the brain might fall out....sorry for the "boomer' diatribe but that's the reality with entertainment currently and it's fucking dark, since we're nearly in the negative feedback loop of shitty fiction (also Boomers also would be confused, gen X would be accurate since they might have been the first to understand irony towards society on a wide scale)
I was hoping it was adapted from a book. The whole time I was thinking it would make a great book series.
I like that. I suppose that's what the director was trying to do. Wet people's appetite. I must say as someone who read the book first, I found the movie disappointing. Mostly because it didn't have the minute detail and personality of the books

When people say “it’s on hbo”, yes, but it’s totally different when watching on a huge screen with Dolby Atmos. Same reason I saw Godzilla vs Kong in theaters. Watching movies like these on streaming is like siping wine through a bendy straw. Also, it’s just fun to go out to the theaters anyway.
Oh absolutely. The sound is absolutely incredible. The ambiance and the aircraft buzzing was such a pleasure. My local theater has a great sound system that just rumbled my seat from start to finish. The score made the movie complete. Without it, there wouldn’t be a complete film.
I will only go to a theatre if they replace butter with horse dewormer.

Is Sicario not seen as one of his best movies? most people will do straight to Arrival and BR2049, Sicario was his first movie I saw and I thought the way he worked with tension was excellent.

I loved sicario. More than BR2049. I loved BR2049 but it's a movie that doesn't inspire me to watch it a second time. Not yet at least. But Sicario I have seen like 4 times already. Arrival I have seen twice. Ennemy I disliked. and that's about it what I've seen from Denis. He is great no doubt on that.

But for people who fell in love with Nolan over Inception, The Prestige, Batman, Interstellar, after the very good Dunkirk, that despite it's quality was ... very different from his usual fantastical projects, and a slightly underwhelming Dark Knight Rises, people (me included) were really hoping for the next movie that was "like Inception" and Tenet didn't quite hit the mark. It was way more confusing to understand than it needed to be (on many levels, not just because you can't hear/understand some important lines) and less visually spectacular than Inception. Though it still had some pretty awesome ideas and is still a great movie overall.
I think Nolan is not someone who likes to repeat something just because it's successful and IF Studios do but pressure on him to "make another movie like inception", he will do his damned best to make it different and do something new. I think that is kind of what happened to Tenet, but to a fault. There is no movie like it but it could have used SOME slightly more traditional film making.
I feel like if Nolan makes another Dunkirk, as in a movie that is excellent but doesn't bring the movie goers that "inception" or "dark knight" feeling of Cinema Magic, studios might start to be less willing to write him a big check for his next projects.
Denis Villeneuve has kind of started to fill the role which Nolan had occupied for me, even if they are still very different movie makers.
That said, I really want to watch Tenet again now. I haven't watched it since I watched it in the cinemas a year ago. It's still a really good movie in my mind.

@@calebwinfield1403 The Hobbit trilogy's fault was mostly on the studio who didn't give more time for Peter Jackson to prepare everything and just wanna rushed it. The studio were extremely greedy with money. Jackson did his best in making The Hobbit trilogy with the limited time he was given. He had about 1 half year in preparing LOTR while only got about 5 months to prepare for The Hobbit after Del Toro left the project, you could imagine how stressful that is for Jackson. It's the studio's fault, not Jackson

@@Fl0k5ser Also keep in mind that originally it was Jackson who would produce the film, and Guillermo del Toro who was going to direct two films. del Toro left the project due to studio malarkey...there is no way of knowing if the films would have been better under his direction, but they certainly couldn't have been worse.
This is a movie that I needed to see in a movie theatre. It was hard sci-fi, with complex characters, stunning visuals, and amazing music. Part 1 for me is 5 out of 5 stars. Absolutely amazing and definitely unexpected. I just want to rewatch it already to appreciate the movie once again.

Only good relationship in the film was the one with the son and mother ( even tho he is said to be the mesias (who needs no companion) he has one in the form of his mother which is unique. The characters felt like wooden cardboards for the entire film, there's barely anything to their personality, hell there wasn't even an attempt to showcase any kind of character development. Jason Momoa was the only likeable part of the first half, not the character he portrayed , just the actor himself. How am I supposed to care about these characters if they got nothing to work with?

Enjoyed this film so much. Despite it having the feeling of incompleteness I felt more excitement about what could come for all the characters. There was no climax but it feels like a beautiful slow burn to get to something even more great. Knowing what is awaiting Paul and the other characters in the lore makes me anxious to see what happens next (fingers crossed). Beautiful film that submerged you into the culture of Arrakis.

The scene in the desert where he is tortured by the visions of future Messiah Chaos was strongly delivered in my opinion. I like the film, is heading the right direction at least, the way the larger than life scale of things compared with people was excellent too.

I enjoyed the film but I had very little idea what was going on most the time 😂. The whispered dialogue went right over my head. Hope there's a part 2.
@Oh My Oh my I'd give this movie an 8/10 because the cinematography, special effects, acting, and casting were consistently impeccable. But while the film brought the world of Arrakis to life, I also think that those two and a half hours were devoid of character development. The movie really was emotionally empty when focusing on each character and they didn't seem as pivotal to delivering a satisfactory storyline. The only character I was invested in was Duncan, who was still an underdeveloped character, and when he died, it didn't have the equivalent effect of losing a well written side character, Dr. Yueh betrayal just felt abruptly forced, and the antagonists didn't have as much screen time as I expected. After leaving the theaters, I never felt so ambivalent about a movie. I still loved the Oscar worthy visuals and effects, but also exhausted through 2 and a half hours of static story telling.
For some reason I really enjoyed seeing this movie with having not read the books and knowing nothing about it. I was really immersed in the world they were building and left the theater excited for part 2 so much so I wanted to buy the whole book collection, Can't wait for whats to come.

The only thing that was built is that the planet is hot, with gigantic worms that travel great lengths to eat 2 miniscule people, the planet has "spices" that are used to fuel spaceships and they use the planet to mine that spice, and there is a empire, wich we see absolutely nothing of.

Unfortunately WB wasn’t willing to sign off on a part 2 immediately, Villenueve wanted to film part 1 and 2 back to back like how infinity war and end game were, but WB wasn’t willing to take that risk. Good news is that the movie hasn’t been out for too long and has almost broken even. I think there’s a good chance we’ll see a part 2 in 2023

Jason Sledge that’s fair. From my understand depending on when WB confirms it Villeneuve wants to start shooting sometime in 2022. Now I’m not too familiar with exactly how long film making takes, but I feel like that would land a release either late 2023 or early 2024.
Also, it gives paul time to become a man, like in the book.
@@Bruh-ff2tw All depends how much FVX work has to be done. And rushing all the effect shots make it worse because then a dozen different effect shops are brought in - and sometimes that can be a mess. Not to mention it makes everything more expensive going that route. Obviously a movie like this has CG in every single shot. You can only rush it so far. Those poor VFX artists have their work cut out for them.
I‘d say 2024 is a good possibility for a release. Maybe 2025 if COVID keeps messing up schedules.
The cinematrography on Caladan was outstanding, the ships in the night and fog were breathtaking.
The art department made the ships feel so fresh and otherworldly.
The cinematography when the Bene Gessiet arrived and departed for Pauls test is outstanding. So many haunting images in this film.
The ship rising out of the water when they were preparing to leave Caladan was amazing

The sound design when the first transportation ship rises from the large body of water while Paul overlooks it on a hill in Caladan is immaculate and throughout the film, it literally shook the cinema!
I saw the film in Dolby and I literally felt my body vibrating b/c of that, that’s why I always go to the theaters.
I theatre I was in wasn't prepared for such a Badass sound design. The screen literally shook during this and many other scenes xD

The Gom Jabbar scene was one of my favorite and thought Han Zimmer did a great job on the score conveying the intensity I felt when I read that part of the book.
Dune was fantastic! And yes, the sequel was green lighted. I was 100% immersed in the world that was created. A true classic
I actually liked the incompleteness. It felt like a complete part 1. And that allowed them to never rush scenes which I hate there wasn’t any lightning quick cuts. You always hat time to digest it and understand what was happening.
It’s something new to today. And fun.
I'm glad they opened the movie with it being Part 1. Allows then to tell the story they want to and end it when they need. It also gives people that expectation of knowing everything won't be finished in this movie. I think it ended perfectly though with Paul changing. Can't wait for more.

The reason is that the movie was released worldwide in late September.

It's nice to see "Dune" done by a great director with the technical capabilities of today. Hopefully we will get part 2. When Lynch agreed to direct Dune it was under the agreement that it would be split into 2 films. But during production the studio pressured him into condensing everything into 1 film. After that experience he has refused to direct anything unless he has full creative control.
Yeah David Lynch is my favorite director of all time. I think the man is a genius. I think they did him really bad with “Dune” and he has said the studio butchered it in editing. It wasn’t the film he thought he was making. It’s sad because it is my least favorite of his movies.

To establish their motives, and also the world is really fleshed out. They did a really good job of helping us understand the politics and which groups are in power trying to do what. If you think it didn't have story I think you need to rewatch it.
@@jordanfelt5978 Na it didn’t. The larger conflict of Imperium vs. Houses wasn’t explained well. What was harkonnens motivation? What was the plot? Where was it going besides gamma-fiction chosen one prophecies and power fantasies? I know little about Dune, but the strongest conceit or the Dune Universe is the idea of Mentats. That wasn’t even mentioned. Mostly the characters sucked. Leto makes you care a little when he heroically decides to rescue those on the harvester. That scene was great. Nothing else stood out except amazing visuals.

I don't know if plot was that big in this film, at least to me it seems that it was supposed to be more character focused. And that's correct they didn't really talk about everything within the politics of the world. But they did do a good job of giving us a good sense of the main characters in their place amongst these politics in this universe. And I mean that was part one, so I presume there's going to at least be a part 2. With that being the case I imagine a lot of these questions will be answered then.

I just went to see it yesterday. Small city of about 60k people, the room was packed and it was in the late evening when the shopping mall is closed so not many people stick around. I think it will have a good run.

This was one of my favorite books in high school. I was scared they would botched it like ender's game but it was awesome! The lore in this universe is crazy you should definitely read the book for the depth and motivations of why characters do certain things. There are some very complex ideologies that are hard to convey in a movie.
On a side note, I have a hard time imagining things so it was so cool seeing all the heighingers and thopters come to life.
Finally a dune fan who understands they can't cram every single piece of lore and detail from the books into a film. I thought it was incredible and you are right some of the things you find in the book as too complex or would take too long to convey through film and some of the other fans of the dune books would do as a good a job of you at remembering that :)
I haven't read the books, so I watched it "blind". And I loved it. Personally I can't understand those who moan that "I did not understand anything! Yadayada", because the movie does make sense. It drops us right in the middle of things, and instead of asking us to to walk it demand that we run. People should embrace the uncertainty and question that rise while watching this (us non-readers ) . This ain't "spoon fed" movie, and I salute that.

The movie overall is beautiful and exactly how I imagined most of the universe. I just have such a huge problem with the lack of character development for Dr. Yueh. He is pivotal to the plot in my opinion. Could’ve used a lot more of him to explain a lot.
I was realllllly hoping we'd get the scene with him and Jessica where she almost figured him out. Another element that felt missing was Thufir being suspicious of Jessica. I understand they had to make cuts but hopefully we'll get an extended edition with another half hour of scenes.
the lack of character development for anyone that wasn’t Paul or Leto was truly disappointing. And Jessica crying in every other scene she was in was also not great. I loved the movie, but I really didn’t like the screenplay overall because all the characters are flat with half their original character traits being excluded. Dr. Yueh’s entire story arc, Gurney’s connection to Paul and his Bard like background, Jessica’s badass personality that she had in the book, were taken out. Kyne’s was also a huge letdown because they took out all the interesting scene she/he has. ALSO, Thufir was basically cut from the story! He was integral to the book.
Total agreement I posted my take on the movie if you can find it in this massive comment section and I absolutely agreed with all your points here plus a few others they changed or excluded way too much from the book and that is a cardinal sin when doing Dune also ignoring the “weirding way“ which is what was the primary threat to the emperor, And why he had “plans within plans”

Those who saw it in IMAX understand it was an experience of a lifetime, I read the book and I brought 7 friends of mine, we watch many films together, to all see it in IMAX. We still talk about it to this day. It was probably the best cinema experience ever, there’s nothing like it.
When I saw the shielded city I had the thought: This guy could pull off Call of Cthulhu. A film that I so far would have called unfilmable. After dune I REALLY want a Villeneuve Cthulhu or even mountain of madness. That guy understands scope, tone, score and CGI in a way I think few contemporary directors do
@Aaron Sanders fair enough but an Emmerich or a Gunn or an Abrams, might have the budget, yet they wouldn't be remotely able to create the right atmosphere and the correct style imo

@@sblagg527 would you elaborate? Because I think it definitely does. It's a sense of constantly not feeling comfortable. That sounds like a joke but it isn't. Villeneuves movies tend to make you feel at unease even when nothing really is happening, which is exactly what lovecraft should be like, granted it still needs to pitch up the horror at some places. Maybe a co-op with some other director who knows cosmic creepyness, but theres barely even a hand full

For example in china there's some other movie there too rn which made like 800 million in 23 days and Dune's performance in China isn't great and it's expected to make around 30-40million at max. China is one of the biggest markets so it isn't very promising. I really hope it does well tho.

I love Nolans movies (Interstellar, Dunkirk) but the new Dune (and also Tenet) is the worst movie I've seen in a long, long time. Incoherent bombastic bunch of scenes with cliche characters even a 5-year old would find boring. 🤪 Spaceships and bombs yet swords and knife are primary weapons. 🤔 Blatant war propaganda with oil pardon "spice" and arab pardon "muslims". Go see D Lynchs Dune. 10 times better. If not 100.

Hans Zimmer's score captured the very essence of Dune and its landscapes. The film itself was very brilliant as it is, and emphasis on time passing at certain moments, and the incredible use of complete silence. But the music, my god, it was unlike any film experience I've ever had.
It’s like they told Hans, “We love your earlier work, but it was too subtle. Go bigger.” It was AMAZING.

As much nostalgia I have for David Lynch's DUNE, Denis' DUNE simply outdid what came before. I'm not very religious, but this DUNE evoked a biblical feel to me that the others don't. It evoked a deeper significance than just the surface story. The scenes with a robed Chani on the desert and shots of the Fremen in prayer just made this DUNE feel even deeper to me.

The Sy-Fy Channel mini stayed closer to the book than Lynch, but the budget was only slightly better than Days of Our Lives which made it hard to watch.

I love how Villeneuve kept the weirdness of dune as there is no aliens except for the sandworms he manages to portray how humans look and act in 10000 years each having a evolved differently but still being human and the ornithopters are spot on.

Zimmer's said his goal was to make the movie to sound like nothing from Earth or even relatable to Earth. He wanted it to be completely alien. I think he did the exact opposite. Bagpipes, Phrygian dominant scales and Mongolian chanting. Epic fail..
Visually every scene is like concept art come to life. Just beautiful lighting, color and scale (something already expected from Dennis, still, I feel this is his best work yet). It literally feels like every scene is perfect. I did think Hans Zimmer did a great job with the score filling the movie with personality, but I did find it distracting at times, even if most of the time it was rather subtle. I thought the story and the characters with all the factions, religion and politics were very interesting. HOWEVER, this movie is SLOW, and this comes from a guy that is not a big fan of bombastic movies like those of the Fast & the Furious franchise (I do like the first 2). It was weird, cause I came out of the theater without having anything bad to say about the movie, yet, I was sleepy and felt a bit tired (which is not the best of signs). All I can say is that it is an ABSOLUTE cinematic masterpiece but it is slow, slower than Bladerunner 2049. When action is present it absolutely delivers but is clear for me that the biggest role of this film is to make a giant setup and introduce you into the world, religion and politics of what hopefully becomes a franchise.
UPDATE: In response to some comments below and getting ahead of myself for (possible) similar comments in the future, I want to clarify: I DON"T THINK I COULD HAVE MADE THE MOVIE BETTER (that's why I didn't have anything bad to say about it). Is the pacing of the movie faster than the book? OF COURSE, but that's expected because movies don't have the same amount of time for exposition and to cover all the details. On the other hand, movies are great for showing instead of saying, and I think Denis makes a great use of the medium in that regard. THAT BEING SAID, that's the problem with Dune, it has a lot of lore; details and exposition that you might enjoy on a good read but that does not necessarily translates as well on film. So even if I think that the movie is a great adaption, TRUTH IS I felt it very slow. Even if I liked what I was watching, I came a bit tired out of the theater (It is what it is, your experience might be different and I respect that).

Slow? Compare to the book, this was going at mach 8. There was so much content, information, dialogues that were cut. They didn’t even explain what a mentat is. So if you haven’t read the book, it might be slow but you guys missed so much.

It is definitely one of the most visually appealing movies I've ever seen and well worth watching on the big screen.
It is truly beautiful and stacked with fantastic actors giving their all. I hope it inspires people to read the books so they can get the full depth and breadth of Frank Herbert's epic story as well.

The film never dragged for me. It was slow, but the pacing was perfection. Set after set, dialogue after dialogue. Reading the book over again before the film, I absolutely loved part one.
Agree 100%. I'm usually a fan of dense high-concept fiction, but I've had a lot of trouble getting into the book. This movie enthralled me and I'm committed to reading the full book now.
But that's how I felt about Blade Runner 2049 and I've heard many say they were bored.

Well, I did the decent thing and paid my hard earned dough to watch this in a movie theatre so as to support the vision of some french guy who probably couldn't give a colloquial deffication about me. Did I enjoy it? Almost.
The f-ing 'emergency exit' signs were shining green pictograms in my face from two different angles really brightly for the whole duration. And then stupid a-holes kept getting up and leaving the theatre to service their bodily functions only to return while casting shadows on the screen.
The sound was good though.
I went to a new cinema for this film because I thought it would be better than the one I usually go to. That one never cleans the projector room glass / screen. Not sure which, but there is this dirty smudge right down the middle of the picture.
Not sure why I bother - I've got a big TV and all I have to do is wait for this to be streamed.
Seriously though, if actual cinemas want to persist they need to up their game and stop taking the piss out of their patrons. I want to buy into the whole romance of the silver screen / shared experience thing but really - meet me half way. Or die. Either way, it's not my problem.

I just got back from seeing this in theaters and, yeah, I was floored. It's visually gorgeous, technically brilliant, and from a story standpoint still compelling. If Denis doesn't get his Part 2 I'll be so disappointed. I'm still salty that David Fincher didn't get to finish the Millennium trilogy, but this get put right up there next to it if it goes incomplete.
Only The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was worth turning into a movie. The rest were not worth it.

EDIT 2: I just realized the Butlerian Jihad wasn’t explained or mentioned. This is what I think one of the core pillars of why I love Dune. The idea that computers are banned and then the consquences of that shaped all aspects of human civilization. This idea is what hooked me into Dune and why I love it. Curious how those unfamiliar with the lore will receive the movie.
EDIT: To clarify; by “borderline perfect” I think I mean for a movie adaptation of the first half of the book. Movies have constraints, it’s a different medium. Also the larger the budget the more accessible it needs to be to new audiences.

@@jamesoloughlin I wouldn't say butchered. It just cut a lot of the buildup to the Harkonnen plot. You go through several chapters of tension knowing their is a scheme in place but not knowing when it gets triggered. The film just kind of gets to the point quicker.

Getting the audience to understand how important Lady Jessica is a key to understanding the lore and I feel like the movie did this effectively.
i disagree... was in the theater with 4 other people.... they didnt understand what shields do, they were kinda useless to them... Jessica was just Pauls supernatural mother from some secret gang, not much to it....

Speaking as someone who knew very little about dune, what an incredible opportunity they have to build a new, beautiful cinematic world. Stunning visuals and audio and was much more complex than a marvel or new Star Wars. I deeply enjoyed this movie.
This film was a visual spectacle! Highly recommend to see this one on the big screen.

I just saw it in IMAX and it was aesthetically Fantastic. Epic in scale, sound, visuals and the acting was pretty stellar. As someone who knows very little about this sci fi classic (although I have the books) I appreciated the vision executed here. You can immediately pick up on the intense and loaded world of worlds backstory with a helluva lot going on, but this film conveys this universe in a way that makes it digestible and understandable for someone coming into it blindly. I also hope it does well, because if so, we’re in for a SAGA, akin to Star Wars!
Just watched this in IMAX and it was honestly the most breathtaking film I've ever seen in a cinema, I watched venom this week and it was so dissapointing and I was almost having second thoughts about watching another movie in 2 days but all that evaporated in the first 2 minutes. 100% from me man you gotta watch it preferably in IMAX or in a Dolby theater.

The thing that sucks most about trying to get a piece of art like this out there is that no matter how digestible you try to make Dune, my mother will watch through the whole thing and not know that main characters name, and probably give it a bad review because it hurt her brain. Too many people have trouble following it, which is completely understandable but sad.
A critic is only as best as his/her understanding.
Complex movies take a certain amount of effort from the viewer to keep track of all the story's moving parts, but can reward them hugely for doing so. It loses some people along the way, but the Godfather had a complex plot and that was recognised for the great work that it is, so there is always a chance that amazing and ambitious movies like Dune can cross over into the mainstream.
Also the fight scenes are very boring. Like I feel no tense or care for them. It just feels like there’s something missing

As a long time Dune fan, I was blown away by the reverence Denis and the cast and crew had for the original material. The scale, the emotion, the humanity as well as the alien quality of this world was perfect. There are a couple aspects I was slightly disappointed didn't make the cut, but this film was all that I hoped for and more. Here are the few things I missed from book to film: (and of course, I know they can't fit everything!)

I do wish there had been the "traitor" plotline. In the book it's a large thread of tension that it is known to the Atredies that there is a traitor in their midst. Of course, we do see Dr. Yueh betray the Duke, and though it was as powerful as it possibly could've been with what info was given, I can't help but think the impact could've been even greater had there been even a few minutes of Theufir's mistrust of the Lady Jessica as the traitor, and also those moments between Jessica and Yueh where she *did* see unusual behaviors, but ended up explaining them away to herself - so human. The stakes were already high, but to have that be known I think would've hit a bit harder.
I understand why they didn't add this part into the film, but I really wish we could've finally seen the dinner scene! I thought that was a wonderful moment to show the powers that be on Arrakis, and also the sharp wit and insight of both Jessica and Paul in moments of intrigue. It's clear in the film they reduced the time between their arrival on Arrakis and the ultimate betrayal by the Emperor, so I'm sure that would've felt very out of place and dropped tension.
Although the Bene Gesserit are shown as very powerful, and I think the voice is portrayed *perfectly* I do wish there had been a few more visual clues as to the mastery of the "soft sciences" of the BG. Subtle hints that Jessica is reading the minutia of peoples faces and expressions, and maybe a close up on her face to indicate that she knows they're lying, or that she understands more than just the words they're saying.
Some people really liked the change in the death scene of Liet Kynes, but I think that was a missed opportunity to show more insight from that character regarding the ultimate dream of the Fremen to turn Arrakis into a paradise. I know it was mentioned, and I liked the " moisture garden room" being moved from the palace to Kynes' place. But I think there could've been insight gleaned in an interesting and organic way had they taken her stillsuit and let her wander the deep desert seeing visions and re-experiencing memories like Kynes did in the book.
My two cents... but ultimately I adored this movie, and think Denis was the perfect person to bring this to life.
Completely agree! as a fellow long time Dune fan, I have been waiting to see this movie for ages and was blown away as it was magnificent! As you have pointed out, I wish the movie was just a bit longer to include some of the parts of the book you mentioned especially the whole traitor plotline and some of the character dynamics while on Arrakis. I feel the invasion came far too quickly without getting enough time to see them settle, almost as if there were a few scenes missing. Obviously having said that, I completely see why they did not include it. Personally, I feel this could have easily been a 3 hour movie like one of the LOTR movies and then have a 4 hour directors cut :D. I desperately hope there's a directors cut or a longer version.

As somewhat of a nerd I couldn't help getting hung up on the crysknife scene. They never draw blood! Also there's a guard right behind them who is not supposed to see any of that. Agree on missing the traitor plotline as well, it's probably THE most important thread for this first part and they completely glossed over it. Breaking Yueh paints a picture of how horrible, horrible people the Harkonnen really are too. Also it leaves Hawat with nothing to do so he's just furniture for this film.

I completely agree as well, but I got the feeling that the traitor plot was cut quite a bit due to time constraints. I wanted to see more of Giedi Prime, and Feyd Rautha, (Sting's character), in the gladiator pit killing slaves, but that being said, I hope more of the world is covered in Part Two.
I watched 1984 version and love it. But, watching the newer version give me something more about the movie. I feel hooked. Love it so much.

@ANTHONY It was my first experience with this universe yes and I thought everything was pretty clear for a newbie like myself and of course I left immediately wanting to see Part Two. It's Denis' most ambitious film so far.
It's really not too difficult to pronounce if you have half a brain.
Masterpiece?? I wouldn't go anywhere near that far. Saw it yesterday, and well, it wasn't bad but I was left with a kind of "meh" feeling. Not much happens when you think about it...there are at least 20-25 minutes that could have been trimmed off the film to get further into the story to get viewers more invested and reach a better ending point for the first half.
@@sblagg527 just finished the movie , the first hour almost feels like they were trying to give a game of throne taste , and the awful dialogue delivery, many times they keep on talking and just go whisper mode really pissed me of , my point of view is don,t try to add flavour , if your has weight people will see it , only things I loved about this movie is the core story , background music(minus the *cough* *cough* snyder screaming wonder woman theme) , really felt bad when the father dies , a ton of plot hole , certainty not a masterpiece

I went in on this movie BLIND... I didn't read the book and I didn't played the game and let me tell ya, I was flabbergasted by the movie by the end of it. Easily movie of the year for me.
Did you understand it? People keep telling me you have to read the books & research a lot of the lore, and even after all that, you still won't get everything unless you're a diehard Dune fan. I'm hoping that's not true.
@@corey2232 I got the impression a lot of stuff was left out and will be added into part 2. I was really looking forward to seeing a updated version of the guild navigator and the spacing guild.
@@corey2232 I never read the books but the plot was easy enough to follow. Some questions I had that may need outside research, but nothing too bad that makes you go "wait wtf is happening." Main issue though was sound; it was hard hearing the whispering dialogue in theaters so I missed out on some names and stuff, although it was likely my theater and subs on HBO max can fix that.

I feel like it should be a series like GOT, its hard to feel bad or hate the character as much as we should with too little character development, that being said it did spectacular with the amt of time it had imo.
The last half of the book is what made the story for me so if part two sticks the landing, I feel you'll get a lot of the character building you're seeking. It's incompleteness is the worst thing about the movie for me.

Just like in so many shots the director shows you a gigantic scenario, and the humans in the background feel tiny and meaningless.
That's what I think is the point of the story. It's not really about "caring" about these characters so much. It's about the journey they take, and how it influences the universe.

I'm kinda concerned how it will do to an average movie viewer, who just casually watch it, will it leave enough feeling of that "whens next, whens part 2, whats happens next" feeling if they dont connect enought to the characters.Maybe i lacks a bit of heart is what im trying to say..

Just saw it in the theater and I loved it! Big, gorgeous, and expansive. I first read the books in the 80’s, and now want to read them again. I thought the exposition was subtle and used very well.
Warner Media CEO kind of confirmed the sequel is happening: "Will we have a sequel to Dune? If you watch the movie, you see how it ends. I think you pretty much know the answer to that".
I sure hope so.

Can’t wait to see this in IMAX, Denis Villeneuve is my favorite director working today.

Saw it in IMAX and the sound design is absolutely nuts. My friends thought it was too loud, but honestly if my hearing was damaged at all, it was worth it.
Yah, him and Tarantino are the two directors where I can go into a movie, knowing nothing about it, and know it will be good.
Dune had a gargantuan scale that was a feast on the eyes in Imax , complied by hans zimmer ethereal soundtrack, a brilliant origin for Paul Atreides and i wasn't expecting the level of action that was In the film , only downside is that it feels like one quarter or half of the book , but it's definitely up their as one the best films of the year, Glad to hear you enjoyed the last duel , currently my favourite film of 2021 , looking forward to your review of the film .
It’s still 2.5 hours, it so hard packing in all the richness from the book!
It's part 1, but still an awesome movie, chose a decent point to cut off for part 2.
It actually covers about 60-70% of the book. Which is great because if Part 2 ever comes out (and it really may), Denis will be able to put more stuff into the movie.
I should have been a big budget 6 part mini series.

Easily one of my best SF movie of all time. It's a true dedication for Art. You can dislike it for many reasons, but from an artistic aspect it's quite a masterpiece.

Honestly i was expecting that the PROLOGUE from the 80's director's cut would have been added to the story, understand how and why Ai and ROBOTICS was banned from the society and how that forced humanity to develop mind skills is crucial to undestand DUNE universe.
Another point are the dialogues, looks like the Dir cutted lots of content to fit a more fast paced movie.
Overall it was a good experience, although i was expexting a more deep sci-fi piece of work with longer shots and a more cerebral ride.
That was such a great point about how Denis Villenueve communicates scale. I'd never thought about that, but it completely rings true.

Every single scene felt big or epic. Even scenes just in a room. The sound design and visuals meshed very well
Showing immense scale is great and can be awe-inspiring, but it doesn't make a great movie. I think most people are entranced at the scale and implied depth than any actual character or story depth presented.
This film was incredible. The first film I've left the Cinema speechless since Inception.
This movie was just incredible to see on the big screen. I decided to read the book before going to see the movie and I’m so happy I did. I’ve fallen in love with the book so I appreciate the movie so much more. Btw I really want to see the last duel but I can only see it like 5 places in my entire country, and I’d have to drive for a long time so that’s a bummer. Looks really good!

@@erwinsmith9473 hi there. It is indeed a lengthy read but if you are good at reading for long periods of time then you should be fine. I spent about a month myself because I’ve only really been getting into reading recently so I don’t yet have the patience for long sittings haha. A bit of help though: the book is split into three parts and if you want to read up to where the movie ends then you should read the first two parts. That’s maybe the first 400 pages. So once you reach part three then you’re good to go.
@@fyessssss haha it’s a long book so I get it. It’s quite complex as well with the amount of new concepts being thrown at you so fast, but I managed to really get into it and understand most of it pretty fast so that’s good.

This type of science fiction has always been a tough sell to general audiences. I'm shocked I got 6 seasons of The Expanse tbh.
Well we had to fight to get it uncancelled after season 3. And TBH I kinda wish it had died there, because the last 3 seasons have disrespected the source material.
I hope Villeneuve gets his whole series and that he's able to keep up with this amazing start.🤞🤞🤞🙏🙏
A very big and important storyline is left out. Jessica is suspected of being the traitor, and Leto goes along with her being watched, but he secretly tells Paul that he trusts her completely. This is important because the whole reason that Jessica had a son, was not to produce the Kwitsatz Haderach, but because she loved Leto. She didn't know that she was the daughter of the Baron and could produce the Kwitsatz Haderach, yet they portray her as being arrogant and ambitious. I hope they correct this in part 2.
I really hope this does well. Lord knows this wouldn't be the first Villeneuve sci fi film with glowing reviews that doesn't do well, and as you mentioned, this year has basically been a slaughterhouse of great films bombing at the box office, as hollywood keeps sacrificing movies to see when audiences will finally come back to the theater. But I have faith that they'll recognize that the potential of this franchise (with Denis at the helm) far outweighs the performance of a single film

Hopefully in the sequel he will since he actually died near the end of the book. It's better if he was shown fighting alongside the battle to increase his screentime contrast it to the counterpart in his book with short exposure.
The books don't go too deeply into the personal lives of the harkonnens, mostly preferring to leave them as a political and ideological enemy rather than making one singular character or family the primary antagonist.

I loved how long and slow burning this movie was, it felt like an EPIC.
Cap interstellar was an epic, this is a boring 1st chapter in a 2 part film (like Deathly Hallows 1 was to Part 2 which was far superior)
It was way too short, should have been 4 hours at least. I felt it was rushed and suffered terribly for it.
Yet it was over before I knew it and left me wanting more.

Saw it last night at the theatre. Dune was everything I hoped it would be, but much more than what I expected. For a non-book reader, I would say that they took the best parts to introduce key elements, characters, factions, machinery, and world settings, to keep the pace of the film coherent. It was a healthy dose of gritty sc-fi, with beautiful imagery and (can I say?) horrific elements. For me, the film could’ve gone on another 2-3 hours to see the rest of the story. As a book reader, this is where I feel that they should’ve gone the trilogy route to flesh out the back story. As an example, I would’ve loved to have seen more of the Bene Gesserit and Paul’s training in the ways of the Bene Gesserit. However, what you get to see of the Bene Gesserit is amazing and I want more of it. It beats Star Wars in that aspect in my opinion. You could nitpick the film from days on end but still be completely satisfied with what Denis brought to the table. I also hope that we get a part 2. It would be a real shame, and a terrible tease, if we didn’t. Did I mention Ornithopters? You’ll think X-Wings looked cool until you see the Ornithopter.
Ornithopters were based on a hardware/software emulation of dragonflies. A real dragonfly can fly backwards, sideways, hover, make sharp turns, and even fly upside down. They can change the angle and shape of their wings in real-time for more flow, creating energy efficiency and greater speed. They can actually stop beating their wings and not lose altitude due to micro adjustments of their wings. Yes, they are amazing. Herbert never explained the full extent of Ornithopters other than they flew like dragonflies. One limitation would be high G turns, but humans of the Dune Universe are vastly physically superior so they could take those G forces without a pressure suit. The other thing is that Ornithopter technology is clearly Ixian in origin as you must have a computer running complex software to make these calculations in real-time. These computers would be in a gray area according to the Butlerian Jihad, but overlooked because of the military advantage. The Ixians could rationalize the flight computer as claiming it was "dumb" and only handled avionics and was not AI.

@@carlo0143 What kind of sci-fi do you like? There is the option to read Frank Herbert’s Dune but it can be a challenge for some readers. The world building, political aspects, and the introduction to characters is very in depth before things get much more interesting. I’ve heard some folks mention the film to be like a sci-fi version of Lord of the Rings or, probably more akin to Game of Thrones. For me personally, Dune is the Star Wars I always wanted to see. I grew up with the original Star Wars trilogy but Dune is grittier and horrific imo.
I ended up watching this on hbo max this during my lunch breaks at work. Thinks have just been too busy to get to the theater. I loved the movie but it had two major problems for me. The volume was all over the place. I ended up needing to put on headphones to be able to hear conversations. The other was Lady Jessica. One minute she is a strong character and then she becomes extremely meek and has a mild breakdown (understandably) and then she finds her strength again, only to lose it shortly afterwards, and the cycle would repeat. It was extremely inconsistent.
Now that he's done his third amazing sci-fi movie in a row, I would say Villeneuve might be the best sci-fi director working today

I read the first 6 books in Frank Herberts original sci-fi series when I was 11 or 12 in the early 2000s. My grandpa passed down his tattered old book to me and I instantly fell in love with world Arrakis and it’s inhabitants. The Jordanian dessert used in this movie is what I saw as young boy flipping through those pages for first the time.
I still think it should've been a miniseries. That way, you force the studio to commit to telling the entire story over the course of a complete season. 10 episode, one hour each would be enough to tell a good story with the right amount of depth.
If this movie is successful I think a series will definitely will be in the works for HBO Max.

I saw it in theatres and I was blown away by this film. I've never seen a book to film adaptation that balances world building, character building and still gives you plenty of quiet and immersive moments like this did. The last time I felt this immersed into a world was when I watched Arrival and before that Spirited Away which I watched in 2004.

The only criticism I heard was it was "slow" which is a shame that we as an audience are literally trained to watch MCU level of BS action per minute movies that anything slower is passed as a criticism. This movie was a visual FEAST. I was looking at the screen like every minute with pure awe. Each frame is wallpaper worthy.

It is a beautifully filmed movie and well-acted.
The pacing of the film killed me but I can see the director is just developing something bigger and full of detail.
