Shame on Red Eddie Muller. He attacks Wanda Hendrix for not being hispanic?! Eddie, you're such a racist. Wanda Hendrix is heartbreaking as Pila. She should have been up for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, and there was talk of that at the time. Red Eddie also lied about the quality of Bob Montgomery's acting and direction in this picture (see his pathetic outro) and Lady in the Lake out of pure, political spite.
You're way off. I don't know what lens you're seeing this through, but it's way past time for a new prescription.
