One of the most balanced and logical videos on RUclips about the Chanel price increase. Acknowledging that you may not purchase more Chanel buys since you already have a big collection is key. There are still many who want to get themselves one or more bags from their wishlist and they will still buy if they can afford to.
Also, the idea that people have that they will 'now just go to Hermes' is plain funny. The price of a Birkin still ends up being so much higher than the Classic flap because you either play the Hermes game and pre-spend in the store or pay the mark-up to the reseller. Glad you mentioned it!

Years ago when I started buying, I wasn't phased by warnings of seasoned clients of the past who bought the exact items for far less that were allegedly better quality than what I was lusting after. Now I feel like I am in their shoes by being shocked by how much the prices have skyrocketed while the quality and value added services are not the same as when I purchased. There are people still dreaming of buying the ultimate trophy of Chanel which is their classic bag. They are looking at it with the same dream I did!
Exactly, the Hermes bags, not just quota bags, do end up costing more because of the prespend. That's the only downside. The quality is great, but the unfortunate reality is that consumers rarely can go in and buy exactly that they want. And now that Chanel is nearly out pricing the Hermes Birkin, I predict the competition at Hermes is only going to get worse. Thanks for watching!

Yup! And I can only imagine that the game will get worse as more and more people try to jump ship and run to Hermes! Little do some understand that it will end up costing more! And Chanel knows this!

Thank you for your video. I think Chanel and Hermes are completely different style wise. I m always a kelly kind of girl. I think people just switch over because of price will be disappointed.

I started collecting Chanel bags around 15 years ago, when the prices were great, compared to now. My biggest regret, though, is that I bought too many jumbo classic flaps, and no medium classic flaps at that time. I have more recently purchased a few medium CF’s, but I still want the beige medium. I’m not sure that I want to pay the current price. I still love Chanel, but, the price increases have become outrageous!!
I agree, the current prices for a medium timeless classic is ridiculous - especially from the perspective of those of us who've bought timeless classics in the past! A medium beige Claire would be so nice, they tend to make an appearance randomly in boutiques. But I totally get your hesitation - the price increases are relentless!

Couldn't agree more Lvette! I mean, I thankfully, have not really encountered too many quality issues. And when I have, I've been able to get a resolution. The 22 bag did have some quality issues for me and they were dismissed by repairs, even though my SA and the boutique manager tried their best. But I have noticed that the leather is a bit iffy on some pieces. At the end of the day, these are mere status symbols/positional goods with a mark up!

I like the style of Chanel over Hermes. My purchases were all before 2018. I have had no problems with my Chanel handbags, but I have not purchased any bags recently.
It’s crazy when we compare prices now compared to 2018! I look back on my purchases and think “wow! I bought a classic flap for less than the current price of a mini!”
I do find Chanel styles in bags, jewelry and ready to wear to be more fun!
Hermes has great pieces, too, but I have to sift through a lot to find what I like.
I'm in a similar situation, Jas. I am content with my CC handbag collection, but would not be dissuaded by a price increase if I was just starting out. I'm still interested in all other items the house has to offer, especially fine jewelry, shoes, rtw (not to mention skincare and makeup). I will always we be willing to spend at Chanel and Hermes, simply because I enjoy them.
Exactly Oli! Though the prices are ridiculous now, it’s not like they weren’t ridiculous before 😂 People are willing to pay the exorbitant mark up for Luxury goods because they enjoy how they feel when they buy something expensive! They aren’t buying for quality. And that’s ok! However, I think more people will be turned off by the brand. But that may not last very long.

I too thought about Hermès but I realized that the likelihood that I’ll get a bag I want is low, and I don’t really want to play a game. The pre love market prices are US$ 20-30 K for a Hermès bag. I don’t imagine paying that amount for 1 bag so it’ll have to be from the store. Some people comment and are upset about Chanel price increase or feel guilty or not safe now carrying a Chanel bag, well same could be for a Hermes bag or expensive jewelry. That’s nothing new. In regards to Chanel quality Ive never had any issues with lamb or caviar bags. An SA told me last month that now they are offering 5 year warranty or something like that. I thought that was good. Chanel CF will be my favorite bag but now exploring other brands like Valentino and Fendi.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Sonia! People will still buy - or aim to buy - what they see value in - even at extortionate prices! And you are right respect to safety - I mean, what about jewellery or cars? Yes, the 5 year warranty was in place I think since 2021. It's on black classic flaps and wocs. The Hermes game is definitely not for the faint at heart and I wouldn't recommend to those who just want the bag. However, it really isn't so bad if you enjoy the pieces you buy during your prespend (depending on location, of course).
This price increase is different to me than others because they are now pricing equivalent to Hermes bags, which are more involved to make. While the brands are completely different styles, the quality difference and amount of work involved to produce them are clearly distinguished. Hermes also does custom orders for this price point. To me, it’s a bit like pricing ready to wear at haute couture prices just because you think your brand needs to be elite or premium. The earlier price increases were not like this.
Well explained! That is exactly one of the reasons why most are shocked - how can a jumbo classic flap be more than a birkin? But, I’m sure Chanel knows that there is a game to be played to get a special order bag or even a quota bag from Hermes that involves prespend - which adds to the cost of the bag you’re after. Whereas at Chanel, anyone can walk in and buy a classic flap (although at some boutiques they are trying to make the classics more exclusive, but they fail to do that every time). I think they know this and that’s why think it’s ok to raise prices.
@@therealshakeen great point about the availability of options at Chanel, especially for regular shoppers. I love Chanel, but I do feel the frequency and percentage of price increases is feeling obscene. I feel almost like a status symbol or brand admiration is turning into a mockery. I am not done but definitely thinking twice about where I wear it and whether I want to choose Chanel over other options.

Thanks Sherry! I hope people understand this point! The Hermes bags end up costing more. Of course Chanel knows this and that’s why they are ok with raising prices! But I think, now more than ever, the competition at Hermes will be even more fierce!

It is literally impossible to actually buy an Hermes Birkin or Kelly. I dropped over $10,000 at Hermes and still no bag offer. Every time, the SA just told me there are no bags available and he’ll let me know when there are. By now, I know that’s just something he says to everyone.
Exactly! It’s not so easy to just go buy a quota bag instead. Sadly, I predict there will be more and more people competing to get these bags, making it harder for the people trying! I hope you get one soon though!

Thanks Nicole! Never say never. If a Chanel bag is what you want, don’t kill that hope. You never know how your life may change. Also, Kate Swan did a great video recently about this and the preloved market. But, if Chanel’s business moves have turned you off from the brand, that’s a different story and totally understandable as well. There are potential and current clients who have now been so turned off that even if they had the money, they won’t want to support the brand and that’s ok! I see younger people who want nothing to do with owning a designer handbag or their pieces.
Good video, buyers truly dictate the market, I just cannot wrap my head on paying 11-12k on bag. Especially since it’s no longer gold plated. I remember my first luxury bag I had to have it lol, after a year or two hardly ever reached for it lol. I think sometimes the chase is more important than actually having the item.

I was thinking of picking up a Chanel WOC (I don't any WOCs) for some time but opted to put the money towards bags with more capacity so no regrets but now since the classic Chanel WOC is $ 4200 Canadian, do you think it is worth it at this price point? Thank you! Honestly, I don’t think it’s worth it at this price point! Especially given that you have other Chanel bags. I would opt for other designers’ styles instead or look to the preloved market for the woc. I love the Dior one! I’ll do a video soon on this!

I wonder what the amount of “tax” amounts to as in Europe the tax is included in the price for us. Now I’m wondering how many countries have tax included or excluded in the price 🤔
USA is taxed differently state to state. My tax in my state is 7% so on the medium classic flap 10,200 plus 7%
Kate is right. So as far as I know, North America (and perhaps Mexico?) has tax on top. Tax rates vary from state to state or province to province. My province charges 13% on top of the sale price.
