Remakes in general bug me but remakes of international films just baffle me... they don’t need to be done just watch the original. God i hate hollywood.
99% of the time I would agree with that, but have you seen "The Departed"? It's a fantastic American remake of a foreign film called "Infernal Affairs ".
Gage Whitman you’re right there are always exceptions I haven’t seen The Departed yet it’s on my list i happen to love Jack Nicholson... that’s why I love film though i don’t like biopics, war movies, or romcoms usually but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t films in those genres i don’t love.
@edward matsyshen It still annoys me because the filmmakers, crew, and actors worked so hard on the original and it's almost always better the first time. We don't really need it in a language suited for us like hollywood seems to think we do..
If you think this film, or many (if not the majority of) other Hollywood remakes, were developed with the intent to honor another work, you're in for a rude awakening. Want to pay tribute to a film you care about? Make it available in your country or location. Put on a film festival. Buy the rights and sell it in your country. Show it in your country in theaters.
I agree, but Lion King is the 7th highest grossing film of all time and the highest grossing animated film as well. So prepare yourself for a shitload more of these.
I can tell this video is gonna be a lot more relevant and important to remember when they inevitably remake Parasite for no reason but because American remakes are a thing because $$$
@@aramisaac4292 Except that the Parasite series is being made BY Bong Joon-Ho (at the very least he's heavily involved), he's said a few times now it's not a remake, but it explores ideas he wanted to include in the film but didn't have the time to do so. Hopefully it'll be incredible, unlike the dumpster fire that is 'Downhill'.
Yet another Scandinavian film ruined by Hollywood. Just like "Let the right one in" though atleast that was tolerable. Also, Force Majeure was robbed of an Oscar nomination.

!!! we watched le intouchables in french class and it was so so good but as soon as i found out about the remake, i felt disappointed already. i think remaking international films in english usually ruins them, especially if they're done by big budget companies who want to make money.
I love that this is quick and straight to the point, like it’s not convoluted or metaphorical; it’s just stating that this film did not need to be made and why
i saw this in cinema with my parents, the last film we watched before lockdown. there was 1 other couple in the room with us and they left halfway through and my parents said it was the worst thing they ever saw. i didn’t even know it was a remake and i hate it even more now that i know
In this instance remakes have a net positive. The director probably made some good money and connections. Without the remake we may not have Triangle of Happiness
@@ThorTwinkle Gotta remind myself not to ever in my life watch that abomination. I got a feeling this movie could be the same for Eurovision as the live-action movie is for Avatar: The Last Airbender
I just had an epiphany! They made this film for the same reason Adam Sandler makes many of his films. To send the stars to vacation spots and have them also be paid to take vacations. Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus were PAID to go on vacation.
This video is great, but there's a simpler answer to the question posed in the title: How to NOT Make a Remake: 1. Don't make it. Much easier, and cheaper, and respective (respectful)
Thanks for this profound analysis! What`s wrong with Will? I just saw "Eurovision song contest", an absolutely amazing wonderful and funny movie, with a marvellous irresistible Will Ferrell as great as an Islandic mountain peak. And now he`s made this remake of one most outstanding films of the last decade? Why?
I don't think that the people who are going to watch this movie know or care about the fact that it's a remake. They want to watch and American comedy and that is what they are going to get.
My brother said he likes this movie and I tried convincing him it sucks but he hates having in depth discussions about movies. So I might show him this since it's only 3 minutes long.
This hits me hard because they announced a remake of Little Shop of Horrors with Scarlet Johansson as Audrey and Chris Evans as yhe dentist and that makes me furious.
I've been waiting for someone to say this because holy shit all of the amazing things about Force Majeure were completely ruined. I mean that isn't to say i wasn't expecting much from it.
How to make a remake Step one: Dont be Spike Lee Old Boy Step two: Dont be female Ghostbusters or Oceans Eleven Step three: Dont be 2019 Lion King or Aladdin.
The first point reminds me of how Anthony Burgress' dislike the American release of his novel. This is because the last chapter, an epilogue, is left out, where Alex cleans up his act and leads a normal life. Burgress' theme was growing up and leaving out the last chapter destroyed that. On a side note, with the last original chapter left in, there are 21 chapters, which was done on purpose, 21 being the age where you become an adult. More on the topic of films, as well as my personal opinion, I think that while Kubrik's adaptation was OK, the book(even without the last chapter) was better, and that the movie destroyed the perceive theme of the shorter American book. The theme I think the book is about is how both the poor and criminals are mistreated and used as a scapegoat by both the government and detractors of the government. Alex attempts suicide because the people who he stayed with, including the person who's wife Alex previously killed, want to prove how wrong the government. Thus, the message is also to not trust those(the people who 'helped' Alex) who hate something(the government), even if you don't like said thing. However, in Kubrik's movie, Alex is killed because the man recognizes him, which clearly does not happen in the book, and I think that this makes the story more bland, boring, and theme/messageless.
guys i don't know why i said "respective" instead of "respectful" either
I still respective you
lmfaooo i was gonna point it out but i felt like i would've sounded douchey
Karsten Runquist Downhill is right next to the movie Dr.Do Little on the AMC list. Another bad remake.

A terrible american remake: Hey
The same thing will inevitably happen to Parasite
new law of thermodynamics; for every excellent european movie there's a proportionally terrible american remake.

Gage Whitman another exception is ‘Vanilla Sky’ compared to ‘Abre Los Ojos’. A stellar remake that was a transcendent experience for me
Hollywood has a bigger problem moving past that "once inch barrier" Bong Joon Ho spoke of than we, the audience does.
@edward matsyshen It still annoys me because the filmmakers, crew, and actors worked so hard on the original and it's almost always better the first time. We don't really need it in a language suited for us like hollywood seems to think we do..
Pretty valid points.
Paying tributes in a lazy way is pretty... Lazy
Yeah. Remakes, sequels, and reboots are three biggest flaws of Hollywood films. Originality is what makes movies missing. Adaptations are justified.
If you think this film, or many (if not the majority of) other Hollywood remakes, were developed with the intent to honor another work, you're in for a rude awakening.

this video came at the perfect time, a quick break in the midst of essay writing madness!!
1:01 is that gabe from the office
I’ve only seen 5 2020 films so far, and yet I always forget that I have seen this film until someone else brings it up.
Someone show this to Disney please
Will probably wanted a skiing holiday

I second this
solid video with solid points. the editing is smooth as fuck

Your best vids are still your film festival vlogs and what you watched in a month series.
Force Majeure is so damn good.
lol Americans stereotype Europeans in movies like they aren't a continent composed by 50 different countries with 50 different cultures

There's coming a Eurovision movie? Made by USA?? That's DEFINITELY gonna suck

Great commentary. Thank you.
Imagine yourself an American remake of Parasite...
There are some good remakes like True Grit and Scarface, and there are bad remakes like Poseidon and Psycho.

How to not remake a movie:
-Lion King 2019
-FANT4STIC
Fant4stic isn't really a remake though, more another adaptation based on the same source material ...
goodial ‘FANT4STIC is a “reboot” of the Fantastic Four film franchise.’

Shots fired? Nah. Straight up nuked.
You should keep that style.
No remake will ever be as bad as the Skins U.S. remake.
