Terry Gilliam's brilliant 12 Monkeys (1995) actually enhanced the storyline of Chris Marker's short film La Jetée (1962), but then maybe this is an unfair comparison. First because Terry is so great, and second because it almost could be considered an indie remake of an indie movie, even though 12M had a big budget and the star power of Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt. BTW, I don't think any other Willis movie brought out the depth of character that he could convincingly portray as much as 12M.

I feel that, if you look at Downhill as a completely unrelated movie, and pretend it has no connection to Force Majeure, it’s a slightly average drama flick.
Poor adaptation, but I’ve seen worse.

Wonderful commentary, especially the canary in the coal mine bit. I can't believe Downhill was made. Like others have said, keep it up, we look forward to seeing more of your work. Anyways- if you haven't already, check out Alejandro Amenábar's 1997 Spanish film Abre Los Ojos and Cameron Crowe's 2001 remake Vanilla Sky. Would be interested to hear what you think.

I'm writing a comparison paper on these two films and was struggling to articulate why Downhill felt so predatory. The points you made are exactly it! Looking forward to watching more of your videos :)

If you go back to the 90's there are many examples of foreign language films getting a Hollywood makeover and they were all terrible. The Vanishing from 1988 and 1993 springs instantly to mind. Downhill actually makes me kind of nostalgic for that era of bad remakes of far superior foreign works. Have you seen Tony Eardman? Great comedy drama. Jack Nicholson was toying with the idea of remaking it then wisely opted to step back from the project knowing he could probably never top the original.

Another European movie that now has an American remake is the French movie Intouchables. The name of the remake is The upside. I have only seen the trailer in the remake, but it is hard to see that the remake would contribute with anything new. It feels like just jet another Hollywood comedy..

Yeah, there have been quite a few remakes of European movies. Apparently US distributors just don't think American audiences would go for the originals, and up to a certain point, they're probably right.

American big screen profit making movies to the America market. The examples are many and most often very bad. Scandinavian and French movies most often get an American remake.

Yes, there are many examples. Another parallel would be the American remake of Funny Games.

@@GlitteratiLobotomy808 Funny Games is a funny one though, since it is a shot for shot remake by Haneke.
The 1997 version was supposed to be set in the United States but due to practical issues it was made in Austria. When he had become a more known and acclaimed director he got the chance to remake it, and...it was not well received, financially or critically.
I actually prefer the 2007 version, but it’s funny how when all the circumstances are ”right” for the remake to be ”better, bigger” it wasn’t in the eyes of audiences and critics
