- Theres a LOT of confusion around the topic of collecting royalties on both the Master and Publishing! For good reason too, its unnecessarily complicated. But once you know this simple 4-step check list of how to do it, it's very doable for every independent music Artist, Producer and Songwriter to collect 99% of all the royalties owed to you.
1. Get distribution. My favorite is DistroKid. Use my promo code for a discount: distrokid.com/vip/kato
2. Affiliate with PRO like ASCAP, BMI or SESAC. If you don't have this, see next step.
3. Get a Publishing Administrator like Songtrust. They will also affiliate you with a PRO automatically (no extra cost) if you're not already. Use my promo code for 20% off: bit.ly/2PsXiDU
4. Register with SoundExchange.
BOOM! That's it. These 4 simple steps might require a little more research on your end if you're not familiar, but as long as you have these covered, you're on your way to collecting 99% of all your music royalties.

@@KatoHipHop is there a way to collect your music pub admin royalties without using Songtrust?
@@ChrisJohnsonTV1980 try consider tunecore
BIG FAX!!!
@@KatoHipHop say bro can we collab on some music?
Littrally love it, no 30 min intro, no life story ❤️ just getting straight to the point, like a video should 🙏❤️
Great video! If you're from the UK, I believe these are the equivalent organisations:
1. Distributor - Distrokid, CD Baby, Ditto, AWAL etc.
2. Collection Society - PRS (part of 'PRS for Music')
3. Publishing Admin - MCPS (part of 'PRS for Music')
4. Recorded music licensing - PPL
If anyone knows better please let me know!

Thanks you for all great this info.
Had everything except sound exchange. All set now.👍
yeeee!
Kato On The Track great info but how do I register a song on SoundExchange properly? Could u make an updated 2020 video?
@@KatoHipHop I like how you simplified it & got right to the point. Most content creators don't do that. Kudos for that. You got my sub on GP for that.
Bro what if i dont registered to sound exchange, will it be a trouble if i only had 3 out of 4 of them?
@@jojo-fj7lw from what i understand YES. You would probably be only getting 74% of all your money.
You are the man thank you 🙏for this info..
That's sick information bro🔥🔥

This is amazing thank you
Thank you for this 😁👍🏿
Great video. One of the best on a complicated topic. Why would there be uncollected money on the streaming side? Aren't the distributors supposed to take that back from the streaming platforms they work with?
Thanks for the info!!
Thank you brotha!!!💯✊🏽💪🏽
Question Kato, what is the point of registering with SoundExchange if your Distribution company is collecting those funds? Can you please explain?
Thank you!
Excellent info. I've been mastering records and occasionally mixing for 20 years but I used to be a producer prior to that in the 90's where it was the wild west with no roadmap. I'm starting to tinker with production again and this info is really helpful.
Hey Kato, great content! And as someone who is already set with everything I believe you could have the answer to my question - I'm still curious how does PRO come to amount that will be payed out to a songwriter generated through streams?
We know that distributor pays for streams generated through master recording and there is a revenue set for one stream ( roughly, we can say that 1 000 000 streams on Spotify will generate around 4000$ from master side), but can we say what value that song will generate on the composition side for the same amount of the streams? Is there any formula? Or is there any ratio for that? Thanks in advance.
Wow.... Kudos man.
Thank you
Good info👍🏾
What is the purpose of P.R.O (BMI/ASCAP etc) including Soundexchange if SongTrust can collect all the royalties for you INCLUDING internationally? Thanks for sharing
Thank you man
Great video
very useful for someone who knows absolutely nothing about music publishing
great video
Amazing straight forward video! one question, My PRO is affiliated with other international PROs for performance and mechanical royalty collection, do I really need a pub admin?
Who is your PRO?
Thanks bro
Kato on the track tysm
Ayy first one to comment but Kato you best
Jonas Rutsch thanks brooo
Thank you so much bro! This applies for other countries too? I mean I'm from Argentina, it doesn't matter? Thx 💪🏼🔥
You are the ceo of producer rights .
Dope video
Thanks for the knowledge homie, which company is better for digital streaming royalties sound exchange or the other one???
I completely agree with everything you said, but this doesn't add up to 99%. Songtrust takes 15% and the PRO's take a small amount. So this is really around 84%, but people should do everything you said for sure.
Hey bro, quick question, does distrokid collect only the master royalties? Is that also the same as the mechanical royalties?
@@emmanuelsimpson1751 mechanicals for the most part come from the physical sell of music(ie. CD's, Tapes, Vinyls) for the most part they are dealing because of streaming. Master royalties are what you would get from a Label depending on your percentage, but the include mechanicals and streaming(Public Performance Royalties) as well as most other revenue streams that the label would receive for your music. Distrokid is going to pay you for streaming, which is different than Mechanicals. Dtistrokid is dealing with your Public Performance Royalties off of streaming.
i dont believe these guys, sontrust takes 100 for 12 months, thats more of rip off than paying the artist
Good Sh Main 💯👍
Great tip mate, just some quick questions, i run a mini record label, I’ve affiliated my label with my country’s pro (iprs from India), so my question is will my pro collect royalties outside India? And should we supposed to register each artist of ours to songtrust & soundexchange?
From what I understand NO. Your PRO in India does not collect US royalties. Here in the states we have the same problem. You will need to register with an American PRO. There are only 3: BMI, ASCAP and the third one is SESAC which is by invite only.
I hope this doesn’t sound like a stupid question, but would I apply the same method to loops that I’m sending out from a beat maker point of view? Or does this only apply to songs when they are finalized?
Great video. Gota say you would need to have PRO before going to Song trust! it doesn't replace it for you. Still, this is decent!
Songtrust can also sign u up with a PRO if you're not with one already 👍
@@KatoHipHop Kato I'm writing my dissertation regarding the PROs. I'm inviting some professionals on a Zoom call for a little discussion helping me complete my research. Would you join us for 15 minutes live interview?
What about for independent producers living in Australia? 1. Who are the top 3 Distributors
2. Who are the top 3 Collection Society
3. Who are the top 3 Publishing Admin
4. Who are the top 3 Recorded music licensing
nice im bouta sub
Also, it's not possible to reclaim streaming royalties if they weren't being collected by a company? unless you re release the song correct?
Im confused about SongTrust, what if you don't want to upload Beats on Spotify only on youtube, Can SongTrust still monetize your content ID? The most straight up video! THANKS!!
@Camilo Ortega thank you, yes it was really helpfull!
So quick. Thank you
Hey I came out on Teo big albums last year but I believe the artist and their label put in the wrong Ipi number. How can I claim my royalties and make sure they come to me . I have ascap
Quick question most of the artist I work with has DistroKid and United Masters. Would it be wise to get both so I don’t leave money on the table?
Can I use music reports instead of songtrust as it also collects mechanical royalties and it's free if I'm not mistaken
what about registering your copyrights with the gov before doing any of this???
kato please can i register my beats after the artist has dropped them.they didnt buy the master.they only want to give me digital stream royalties but never mentioned publishing..can i do all you said after the artist has already dropped and promoting the song?
Is it necessary to pay a distribution company if I'm not getting more than 300 streams per release? Why not just distribute my music myself on to platforms such as youtube, soundcloud, instagram, tiktok, facebook? Can't I always release my most popular songs if people ask?
I'm signed as a songwriter and publisher,..so do I need songtrust ? Will my mechanicals come to me without songtrust ?
so what about if your UK based, should you sign up with MCPS or still with Songtrust to get publisher royalties?
What's your thoughts on joining HFA & or Music Reports if you already have a pub admin like Songtrust and/or an actual Pub deal (complex I know, the pub deal is 90% instrumental sync/licensing)
Songtrust works with HFA so you'd be covered there with all your mechanicals. Music Reports is good to have tho.
If im a producer and the artist registers the song I produced on tunecore, do I still need to register the song on my end?
Would you recommend using all of these companies as a producer? Tracks that are just instrumentals or even instrumentals with hooks? Some producers are saying to only copyright and get a distributor. But I would like to have my instrumentals on Spotify, Soundcloud outside of just RUclips/Beatstars.....so I'm kinda stuck on what to do before I launch my channel.
Really appreciate any help!
Absolutely. I produce instrumental music and I registered for everything Kato mentioned. You need to sign/register with the ones he mentioned so that all bases are covered and you’re not leaving money on the table. My PRO is BMI which allows me to claim both the writers and publishers share of my royalties, but ASCAP will allow you to do the same. This is if you’re based in the US. I’m not sure what the PRO is outside of the States. It’s a worthwhile invest to register though.
Can a producer claim sound exchange royalties? Because we don’t own the masters so I’m not sure if we can collect that
Still recommended in 2023?
Kato...BMI asking for you to turn over the rights to your music to them for the time that you are under contract with them. Is this something that is normal and necessary? If I turn over ALL RIGHTS to them I have no say so over my music anymore until the contract is up. That's scary!
yeaaaaaaaaa
Can you manually distribute your songs and still collect everything?
May I ask, why after go to black box and then it go to Taylor Swift, Drake, or famous artist ?
Yo Kato I Subscribe to ya good info bro
How to approach this for people living in India! We live outside US
Jo the camera is to the right of you!
How do you find Royalties that you haven’t collected before they go to black box, ??? Because I only collected the publishing royalties.
Yo bro great vid but quick question y is it only 99 percent?
what if you've started your own publishing company and signed up with bmi publishing as well? Is this the same as a pub ad?
no.
another question..
i only have 176,000 plays on spotify but only a 3 songs that have over 20-30k streams.. is it even worth the time of registering my works right now? so far i have been collecting minor payments from my distributor. at what point do i need to make sure im signed up for BMI, song trust, and sound exchange?
Dooooope
Wait the money that doesn't get claimed just gets distributed to the top earners of the industry?!??? That is beyond savage... damn...
will i actually collect from DJ spins in the club or at a party, etc?
from the way you explained it, i think BMI collects radio and Sound Exchange gets internet radio. but if i network with DJs how will i generally get paid?
Those kinds of dj plays are unmonitored, so no you will not collect anything from those. Only things that have to go do through a system in order to be played will you get paid from.
How does it work if i sold a beat? They have a mp3 lease. What can u claim if they released music with that beat ??
You would think unclaimed money would help the poor on the streets, not line the pockets of already rich music artists. Makes my blood boil. Thank you so very much for your kind video which supports independent artists.
Is this also applicable for artist outside the US, like the Netherlands?
of course, worldwide
What about RUclips live performances
Will cd baby pro cover everything
so when an artist splits with a producer so those splits usually
apply to every category of royalties?
its important to understand the difference between the Master recording and the Publishing. when u do split sheets with an artist or producer, thats a simple document stating everyones Publishing ownership (which hopefully result in royalties). The Master recording is a separate copyright which also generates its own royalties, and should be handled with a formal agreement or contract.
is music reports the same as soundtrust?
