I watched this just because I was curious how my favorite artists get paid when I buy or listen to their music. After hearing all of this, I hope they are getting all the money they should be getting.

I have a pretty precise question. I am a music artist and I am registered with SongTrust, SoundExchange and I get my money from the distributor as well. Let's say I want to give my producer 5% on the master and 50% on publishing. Where exactly should I claim what? Should I just claim my 95% in the distributor and SoundExchange and 50% in SongTrust?

Hey I got a question pls
I’m a music producer. An artist used my beat without purchasing it and uploaded it to major streaming platforms. Do I have the right to claim 100% on SoundExchange as the rights owner?

Thanks 4 what you do. You're knowledgeable, more importantly you're smart. This is an unusual request & it all comes with one big smile of understanding I hope :) - Question: I've chose CD baby, BMI and will self-publish. The amount of info you put out there is kind of overwhelming. -----------Now seriously, I don't need to get every last cent of money I can get out of every last opportunity to make money, so what other companies do I Have to Have to get say..... 80 or 90% of monies? I've chosen 3 crucial things above. Are there any other crucial things. Is Sound Exchange crucial? It's not likely to cost me 30% of my eventual profits if I don't go with them I assume. Thanks. :)

question for you, I have a music video that is unmonetized due to it being an new channel. The video has amassed about 180k. I use DistroKid but I do not used DistroVid and used no distribution to drop the video. The song itself is licensed thru Distro kid and is on all platforms including RUclips music. Is there a (correct) way to submit this to someone/something to collectors royalties from the music video or am I SOL?

SoundExchange does have some reciprocation agreements with other collection societies, but they do not collect directly, so it's up to the foreign society to notify and pay.

I feel like this is all so highly unnecessarily complicated to deter the independent artist, everytime I think I have all the bases covered a mild breeze shows about 40 more, I just want to share my gift with the world, would it be ludicrous and wholly foolish of me to simply copyright my music and skip all this distribution and royalty business???

the fascinating thing is, of all the intellectual property systems, the music licensing one has been the most flexible (adding “interpolations” of past songwriters) and is actually getting people paid even across very different means of distribution. for your specific case this feels like overkill, but the more niche someone else’s contribution is, the more necessary these complications are for them to be compensated at all. honestly the more indie you are the more you need these
i do feel like licensing houses who by default pocket mechanical royalties with newly signed artists are the predatory part, while arguably they perform functions for their clients, they practically sit on a bunch of masters until its time to get a payment from it.
