3 of Colorado's draft picks that year are in the top 14 of the redraft. And as a coincidence, Colorado had to face those 3 players on the way during their stanley cup run this year, in order.
Duchene their first round pick in the first round with the Preds, O'reilly their second round pick in the second round with the Blues, and Tyson Barrie their third round pick in the conference final aka the third round with the Oilers. Colorado had no fourth round pick otherwise chances would have had him on the Lightning.

Pretty crazy stacked draft actually, though it does fall off after the top few. My list:
    1. Victor Hedman - Arguably the best defenseman of the past 7 or 8 years. A Norris, a Conn Smythe, and five third place Norris finishes.
    2. John Tavares - One of the top goal-scorers of the past decade. Scored 47 goals in 2018-19.
    3. Ryan O'Reilly - Among the best defensive forwards of his time. One Selke win and many other Selke votes, along with a Cup and Conn Smythe in 2019.
    4. Oliver Ekman-Larsson - Amazing goal-scoring defenseman in his early years with Arizona. Received some Norris attention as well.
    5. Matt Duchene - Despite turning 31 years old last season, had a career best 86 points in 78 games last year.
    6. Brayden Schenn - Has been a great top 6 forward for 13 years of his career.
    7. Robin Lehner - Won the Masterton and was 3rd in Vezina voting in 2018-19.
    8. Chris Kreider - Will rise if he has more years like this past one, when he scored 52 goals.
    9. Darcy Kuemper - Won his first Stanley Cup this past year and had a couple excellent seasons with the Coyotes.
    10. Nazem Kadri - Had a breakout year this year with 87 points in just 71 games. Has otherwise been a great 2nd line forward.
    11. Mike Hoffman - Underrated forward who can be the linchpin of a 2nd line.
    12. Evander Kane - Personality issues drop him a little, but he can be relied on as a strong offensive piece to any top 6 group.
    13. Tyson Barrie - Regardless of defensive woes, he's a very capable offensive defenseman.
    14. Nick Leddy - Solid all-around defenseman with 851 games already.
    15. Anders Lee - Captain of the Islanders for several years now is a reliable goal scoring threat.
    16. Mattias Ekholm - Solid defensive defenseman who also provides good offense
    17. Reilly Smith - 3rd all-time in scoring for the Vegas Golden Knights and a solid middle six forward for many years.
    18. Tomas Tatar - Streaky scorer, but extremely dangerous when he's hot. Six 20+ goal seasons.
    19. Ryan Ellis - Short, but solid defenseman with over 500 games for the Predators.
    20. Kyle Palmieri - Surprisingly effective sniper with four 25+ goal seasons.
    21. Marcus Johansson - Great complementary third liner who had a few years as a top six forward.
    22. Dmitri Kulikov - Long career already with 805 games and was a steady top 4 defender for the Panthers for years.
    23. Craig Smith - Excellent middle six forward who can provide steady offense.
    24. Jakob Silfverberg - Long-time Duck has been a reliable offensive player, scoring 20+ goals three times.
    25. Dmitry Orlov - Reliable top 4 defenseman for the Capitals for 10 years.
    26. Eric Haula - Had a great 29-goal season with Vegas in 2017-18 and had remained a solid middle six forward since then.
    27. Marcus Foligno - Has developed into a good middle six winger for the Wild.
    28. Sami Vatanen - No longer in the NHL, but was a desirable top four defender for all nine years of his NHL career.
    29. David Savard - A remnant of the past with his big and strong defensive play.
    30. Mikko Koskinen - A regular netminder for the Oilers for four seasons and had a very strong 2019-20 season.
Other names: Anders Nilsson, Cody Eakin , Kyle Clifford, Ben Chiarot, John Moore, Brayden McNabb

Avs beat their top 3 picks in the '09 draft this past year in the playoffs lol in order too. Duchene was a 1st rd pick, O'Reilly 2nd rd, and Barrie was a 3rd rd pick.
Beat Duchene/Preds in Rd 1, then O'Reilly/Blues in rd 2, then Barrie/Oilers in rd 3.

As an Isles fan I 100% agree with Hedman at 1. I thought that back in 09 too, but with the turmoil the team was in back then Tavares was the clear choice to get the fans excited. They needed that star up front . No one ever bought a ticket to see defense.

I live in Ottawa and I remember hearing from people that had bumped into Lehner at downtown bars after his Calder Cup win in the AHL and he was still pissed that the Sens were consistently looking past him. They brought in Bishop for nothing, and traded him for nothing. They got Hammond for free, and decided to take the risk on the obvious flash-in-the-pan rather than stick with their young goalie that obviously just needed somebody who gave a damn about him to help him with his alcohol and anger problems. Dorion was head of player personnel and then AGM through that mess and is part of why I don’t like and don’t trust that weasel to do the right thing on or off the ice.

For those wondering why their team doesn't have a pick, copied this from wikipedia (and added the pick numbers). My favorite is that the Sharks' pick went from San Jose to Tampa to Ottawa to Islanders to Columbus.
The Minnesota Wild's first-round pick (12th overall) went to the New York Islanders as the result of a trade on June 26, 2009 that sent Columbus' first and third-round picks both in 2009 (16th and 77th overall) and a seventh-round pick in 2009 (182nd overall) to Minnesota in exchange for this pick.
The Columbus Blue Jackets' first-round pick (16th overall) went to the Minnesota Wild as the result of a trade on June 26, 2009 that sent Minnesota's first-round pick (12th overall) to the New York Islanders in exchange for Columbus' third-round pick in 2009 (77th overall), a seventh-round pick in 2009 (182nd overall) and this pick.
    - New York previously acquired this pick as the result of a trade on June 26, 2009 that sent San Jose's first-round pick in 2009 (26th overall), Toronto's second-round pick in 2009 (37th overall), and a third and fourth-round pick both in 2009 (62nd and 92nd overall) to Columbus in exchange for a third-round pick in 2009 (77th overall) and this pick.
The Calgary Flames' first-round pick (20th overall) went to the New Jersey Devils as the result of a trade on June 26, 2009 that sent a first and third-round pick both in 2009 (23rd and 84th overall) to Calgary in exchange for this pick.
The Philadelphia Flyers' first-round pick (21st overall) went to the Columbus Blue Jackets as the result of a trade on June 26, 2009 that sent San Jose's first-round pick in 2009 (26th overall) and Toronto's second-round pick in 2009 (37th overall) to Anaheim in exchange for this pick.
Anaheim previously acquired this pick (21st overall) as the result of a trade on June 26, 2009 that sent Chris Pronger and Ryan Dingle to Philadelphia in exchange for Joffrey Lupul, Luca Sbisa, a first-round pick in 2010, a conditional third-round pick in 2010 or 2011, and this pick.
The New Jersey Devils' first-round pick (23rd overall) went to the Calgary Flames as the result of a trade on June 26, 2009 that sent a first-round pick in 2009 (20th overall) to New Jersey in exchange for a third-round pick in 2009 (84th overall) and this pick.
The San Jose Sharks' first-round pick (26th overall) went to the Anaheim Ducks as the result of a trade on June 26, 2009 that sent Philadelphia's first-round pick in 2009 (21st overall) to Columbus in exchange for Toronto's second-round pick in 2009 (37th overall) and this pick.
    - Columbus previously acquired this pick as the result of a trade on June 26, 2009 that sent a first and third-round pick both in 2009 (16th and 77th overall) to the New York Islanders in exchange for Toronto's second-round pick in 2009 (37th overall), and a third and fourth-round pick both in 2009 (62nd and 92nd overall) and this pick.
    - New York previously acquired this pick as the result of a trade on February 20, 2009 that sent Mike Comrie and Chris Campoli to Ottawa in exchange for Dean McAmmond and this pick.
    - Ottawa previously acquired this pick as the result of a trade on August 29, 2008 that sent Andrej Meszaros to Tampa Bay in exchange for Filip Kuba, Alexandre Picard and this pick.
    - Tampa Bay previously acquired this pick as the result of a trade on July 4, 2008 that sent Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich to San Jose in exchange for Matt Carle, Ty Wishart, a fourth-round pick in 2010 and this pick.
The Detroit Red Wings' first-round pick went to the Tampa Bay Lightning (29th overall) as the result of a trade on June 26, 2009 that sent a second-round pick in 2009 (32nd overall) and Florida's third-round pick in 2009 (75th overall) to Detroit in exchange for this pick.

What’s crazy about Hedman is that his “elite” play only started at age 26, in 2016-2017. He played 7 seasons prior to that. He was good in all those seasons but not amongst the best. From 2016-2017 on, he never looked back. Won one Norris and was runner-up for five.
Edit: not uncommon for defensemen back in the day to hit their prime at 26-28 years old, but nowadays defensemen are showing their elite potential at a much younger age.

For more defensively-oriented defensemen, their peak is late 20s-early 30s. Slavin, Brodin, and Pelech have had the same developmental curve as Hedman. Makar and Fox broke out around the exact same time as Erik Karlsson did, aka. their age 23-24 seasons. They developed earlier because they are offensive players first and defensemen second.

Shannon have ever looked back at these redrafts and totalled up who's picked the most players of the ones you've selected? Think there's some interesting things that can be looked at there. For example how it seems that teams who regularly are in cup contention seem to draft well in late rounds and find "steals" and many of the teams who struggle rarely have a late round player in your redrafts. Or how does Nashville draft so well when it comes to defensemen? Is that great scouting, a quality development system or both. Might be something worth looking back at and comparing some time

Glad to see the Kyle Clifford honorable mention. I would take him in the late first. If you look at the early career, and the type of presence he was, that could easily have continued on longer, if not for getting his bell rung a couple of times. That combined with winning young gave his career arc a downward slope that, if you were starting over today, might not occur. He also had a lot of upside that went undeveloped because he immediately fit into that role so well.

I remember getting into a weeks long discussion about this draft with an Islander fan at work, in the weeks leading up to the draft. He was going back and forth who he wanted, Tavares, Hedman, Duchene. My argument was that they had screwed up so many drafts in recent years that they should just go with the safe pick, which was Tavares. Another team could afford to take chances and overthink it, but not the Islanders. Even though Hedman has obviously turned out the better player, I still think Tavares was the best pick for the Islanders, even with how it turned out in the end.

After 13 years we can agree that Hedman has found the best place to play. In Tampa, player development is the best in the league, with Cooper behind the bench they score a lot, so he can show his offensive skills like last year when he had 20 goals. If he was taken by Islanders, he still could put great numbers and be one of the best d-mans in NHL, but I am not sure about his offense. Similiar to Niedermayer in NJ and in Anaheim. In both places he was elite, but when he played for Ducks, he scored a lot more.

Tavares is like Hall ... both always had other stars playing with them ... I remember watching him at the WJC and from what I saw ... it was his linemates who were the difference makers ... not that Tavares was bad... his game just didn't jump out as much as both his linemates (one being Eberle.)
Yes, Tavares puts up the points... he just never seems to be the guy who carries the team to the finish line.

  • @AMan_629

If you’re drafting strictly based off who has had the best career, hedman is 1st. But as an isles fan. If i went back in time to this draft with the knowledge of how this entire class panned out. I’m still taking jt 1st overall without hesitation. Idk if Hedman could’ve put the team on his back and carried below average teams to the playoffs year after year like jt did. I’m a true believer that a center is the most important position to a team (besides goaltender). I don’t see how the islanders would’ve ever made the playoffs with Frans Nielsen as a 1st line center.
I also don’t know if Hedman has the same leadership qualities that jt had. Jt was the locker room leader from the day he arrived. Jt gave us culture, respect, a reason to watch games. Even though I mad that he left the way he did, I’ll never forgot all the great things he’s done for the team.

    • @AMan_629
      @AMan_629 2 года назад

Also in defense of jt. I could never blame him for the shortcomings of the islanders. The best linemate he’s ever had is a debate between Matt Moulson and Kyle Okposo. JT’s best defender before the leddy/boychuk trades was mark streit who was 32 and already declining in JT’s rookie year. His best goalie was griess. Garth snow was terrible at his job and wasted the 9 years of JT’s career. The team could’ve been so much more than a perennial wild card contender with no home arena if Garth could do a better job.

Lol what, Hedman has "A" on his jersey for a reason. He is true leader who even could teach Rutta how to be 1st line d-man. Now without McDonagh his leadership will rise up even more. Stamkos, Hedman and Killorn are leaders in locker room.

    • @RRaquello
      @RRaquello 2 года назад

Watching the Islanders pretty closely all the Tavares year, I never thought of him as a stellar leadership guy, He was captain because he was so by far their best player, but the Islanders were kind of lame most of those years and Tavares didn't seem to pick them up much. But I do think he was the right pick for them at the time.

    • @RRaquello

@LETZ GO 2023 NHL draft He impressed me as a guy who got very famous too young and became shy of drawing too much attention to himself, so in his talks with the media he was very vanilla and didn't want to say anything controversial or to reveal too much of his private thoughts or personality. We'd been hearing about him since he was about 13 years old as the next great player, and he didn't like being in that spotlight, so he was very careful in how he presented himself to the public. I don't know how true this all is, but that was my impression.

    • @AMan_629
      @AMan_629 2 года назад

@LETZ GO 2023 NHL draft this is so true. From my perspective of those isles teams, they saw how much he was putting in every night and followed him into battle. He’s also a guy who made his teammates so much better. Moulson, Bailey and Okposo have never been close to the production they had on JT’s wing, before or after being his linemate. Jt somehow made Bailey an all star. 😂 Anyone who can make josh Bailey look like a good player gets my approval.
