  • Removing my old Vault hubs and replacing them with new bearings and Vault caps.
    It is a good idea to get extra O rings and inner seals. Also keep your old caps as spare for roadside help incase one pops off.
    **I now recommend using GREEN LOCTITE-609 on the Vault Caps instead of BLUE LOCTITE. This will drastically reduce losing a cap from vibration or large pot holes**

    I have the 2.328 inner bore hub. I woud absolutely not reuse the hub covers. When I got the new ones I thought they were too big because I could not get them in, gave up and put the old ones back. They went in too easy and I started to think about Dexter saying they are one-time use. I measured the old vs new outter diameter and they were different by a few c-hairs. Decide to try again, this time filled the cap with oil and put it in the freezer for 90 minutes. Went on way easier and is a very tight fit. Not getting stuck on the side of the road is worth the price of new hubs. Been 7 years with no issues.

The one that came with the replacement kit doesn't seem to fit correctly. It seems too small. Half of the ring slides in, but the other half lays out of the groove. Will it slide into place when I pound the cap on? Thanks again.

    I finally got the other O rings out. I used the sharp point of an old steak knife. They came out fairly easy. Getting a new one back in was pretty easy too. I took my time and was real careful. I would highly recommend doing this when temperatures are cool. Like maybe 50 degrees F. It was about 90 this morning when I quit and the grease just gets too liquefied. I'll finish the last one tomorrow morning when it's cooler.

    • @slalomking
      @slalomking 3 года назад

      azcharlie2009 you need a better grease if it's liquefying at 90F.

    • @azcharlie2009
      @azcharlie2009 3 года назад

      @@slalomking I understand what you're saying, but that's not how this system works. The grease used is a hybrid grease, that is designed to liquefy as the temperature increases. Oil is actually a better lubricant than grease, if you can get it to stay in the bearing. If you look at big eighteen wheeler trucks, they have oil lubricated bearings. I did all four axles and pulled the boat from Tucson to Lake Powell and back in over 100 degree temperatures. No problems....

    I learned some things but I would watch a video on how to pack bearings with grease. Also, does the cap comes off a to expose a grease fitting under there so that you can fill the bearing buddy?

    • @MidwestOutdoorExperience
      @MidwestOutdoorExperience  4 года назад +3

      Not much of a need to pack the bearings since the grease comes from the back of the hub when filling. The cap only comes off as a whole, you can then screw in the grease fitting and pump it full.

    • @MidwestOutdoorExperience
      @MidwestOutdoorExperience  2 года назад +2

      Pop the old caps off, and buy new ones. While you’re in there pump new grease in through the spindle so it’s fresh. Should be good to for for a while then. The caps are intended to be a “one time use” but that’s not always the case. If you order new ones, keep the old ones for spares on road trips.

    Dude, you need to learn how to pack bearings. If that didn't fail it was because adding grease in the fitting saved you. Also, I didn't get the pounding on the hub cap then the vault center is sticking out, how did that work? And, maybe tighten bearings, spin, then adjust bearing end play?

    • @MidwestOutdoorExperience
      @MidwestOutdoorExperience  Год назад +1

      Packed them for years by hand. Didn’t show the entire process because it’s tedious. Having the center zerk also pushes it through the bearings to help fill any voids. Putting the pvc cap on the hub when putting it on allows the center to expand and have positive pressure like they’re designed to do. Probably over 10k miles on my trailer since I made this with 16 hour straight road trips and bearings have never even been warm.

  • @jboze

    Is it required to remove the grease fitting after filling? Why can't the original Vault caps be used? I'm getting ready to redo a couple of mine.

    • @MidwestOutdoorExperience
      @MidwestOutdoorExperience  3 года назад +2

      You'll want to remove the grease fitting so it doesn't interfere with the black cap that protrudes. Vault recommends not re using the original caps because there is a chance they will not fit as tightly. I think that is mostly toward the claim of being maintenance free for "X Years/Miles". I went ahead and got all new caps, but keep my old ones in the toolbox on my truck for roadside emergencies.

    • @MidwestOutdoorExperience

      You will want to use the vault brand, which is a hybrid grease/oil. If you want to use a regular style grease, such as Lucas Red & Tacky, or their marine version, I would recommend bearing buddies.
