Hi - On this vid in 2015 you said you would do one w/o the Ball Cup Tool. I can't find it on your website or Y-T channel. What's the deal?? How can I do this w/o the tool?
This was an extremely helpful video. I had started to take one like this apart and had no clue how to get it back together. The step by step and camera work were excellent. Mine, is back up and running thanks to this video.
A good source for the missing pin you had to leave out is your local hardware store. When engineers design a piece of hardware they try to use common sizes as much as possible. Between fraction, letter, number, and metric size drill bits you can usually find a very close match. The shank usually isn't hardened and is the same size as the fluted end. A propane torch or even the burner on a gas fed kitchen range will provide enough heat to harden and temper such tiny parts if they need it.
Very good RJ, once again. Very patiently explain things, which makes it less daunting for anyone wishing to have a go at this. I always enjoy your tutorials, as they are less about you (as a lot of these vids. are) and more about 'the job in hand' Commendations once again! Rob. Nuff said....
Thanks. Your video was a lifesaver. I watched it several times to finally be able to reassemble a Shimano hub on an old bike. I'm not sure it was worth the effort, but at least I have some idea how the hub works now.
Just took my 333 hub apart and serviced it all. couldn't have completed it without watching this video twice . Still had a little trouble with the master hub Pawls not seating properly against the wheel hub shell. I noticed that the shifter rod would not move when things were not seated properly . I can't believe that I could still buy the shell hub tool . Video really is step by step .
Curtis, I had the same problem with the master hub Pawls not seating properly against the wheel hub shell. It all seemed to go back together fine, but it wouldn't shift. Difficult to see the problem. I finally figured it out last night and got it to work. I couldn't find the tool anywhere online so I made one out of the large nut from a ball trailer hitch.
I am in the process of repairing a 333 and I had to make the short axle key to make it complete. Re-assembly did not go well & ended up breaking a pawl and spring so I ordered these & a few extra parts off ebay. Delivery is Oct 17th to 24th and will throw an update later on as to how things went. No special tools used here, just my own variation I cobbled up. Thanks for the excellent video!
Unfortunately, those Shimano 3 speed hubs are not as robust as the Sturmey Archer hubs. They had to redesign the whole thing so as not to infringe on any of SA's patents.
RJ, thank you for your awesome videos. I have used several of them to help me repair bikes I have worked on. One thing I have not seen any videos on, and that is front freewheels. I have two that I would like to disassemble and clean. I know they are not common, but if you have a chance, I would love to see a video on that. I also recommend your videos to anyone I encounter that wants bike repair advice. Thank again.
ABSOLUTELY AWESOME VIDEO! I just picked up one of these hubs and wanted to overhaul it before building up a wheel and now I know how to do it! THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH!!!
Thank you for this video. I found those clips hanging out in there. I made my own notch on outer lip and was able to use a blunt chisel and hammer to remove threaded hub.
Thank you for posting this! It took me a few tries but I’ve finally got my hub back together. The tool was an PITA to track down but essential. I actually got all new guts so I got to skip a couple steps but never would’ve been able to accomplish the repair without this video.
Thank you so much for this video. I took apart a jammed up 333 hub on a 1970's Huffy and couldn't figure out the pin and spring setup. This video saved a much deserving bike. A little sappy, but what the heck.
RJ very nice video, I am wondering if there is any make shift tool I could use in place of the Shimano TL-3S20? I am going to try a punch and hammer, but I want to know how to unscrew that part without the speciality tool.
Brother, you are a savior. Thank you very much. I have a question, if you can answer, my pawl springs "B", (part 300028) are demolished, where can I find this little things (4 of them) or do you have an idea how to resolve this? I can not find this part anywhere. Thank you in advance, God bless you.
Thanks so much for posting this. This is the hub I had in my "Dragster" style bike I had as a child in the early 1970's (they were called that in Australia but I believe they were called wheelie bikes in the US). I never overhauled it but I was always curious what was inside. I recall I the bike was supplied with a manual for the hub with an exploded drawing and parts list.
Dear RJ, awesome work, awesome video and compliments again teaching us how ro do it and being confident to get all these crazy parts reassembled again 👍🌞🍀 greetings and thanks from Germany 🇩🇪

If you did that, can you tell us where the video is or what it is called? If not, can you give a short description of what one might do to overhaul the transmission without the tool. Thanks in advance.

This looks really hard. I just bought a new bike with this hub. I ride about 2,000 miles per year. How many years do I have before having to overhaul it? Also I don't ride in the rain or snow.
Hello RJ The Bike Guy ! I am working on a bike with the same hub and have been having shifting problems. It is a bike from the 60's maybe even the 50's but the workings on this hub are identical to your video. When I followed your video, at 18:20 , you remove a bearing race. My race had a deformation on one of the tabs that separate the ball bearings. Hoping to maybe find one at our custom bike shop, the older tech there said "ya that race is damaged, we don't even see these hubs anymore". He took a screwdriver and pried it out and then gave me the same size ball bearings ( new ) to put back in. He said "just pack it with grease to keep the balls in". I figured he knew what he was talking about so I did just that. Should I continue re-assembling the hub or is this going to damage something else ? If it is a bad idea do you have any idea as to where I might be able to buy this bearing ? Secondly, when we were kids way back riding these bikes I was pretty sure that you had to pedal backwards to shift gears. Or was that a bad idea/ misconception back then ? Thanks for any help you can give to this novice. An EXCELLENT video by the way !
Nah. you can replace the bearings in a cage. I prefer to replace the whole caged bearing. There are some kickback hubs that backpedal to shift. Not all of them are like that. Not this one.
Thank you RJ. Very helpful. I'm looking for a Shimano TL3S20 ball cup removal tool like the one in the video. Would you be able to recommend a place that might have one? Thanks.

just picked up an old Jaguar with 3 speed 333 Shimano. The push rod appears to be stuck. It won't push in and I can't remove it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I didn’t find one but turns out that a simple square section or something like that do the trick ! I also try to 3D print one but the plastic wasn’t strong enough
Hey RJ im having abit of trouble with my push rod. it isnt engaging like it should, jn fact it hardly even goes in. i took apart the hub and followed your instructions but once i fitted the wheel back on put the push rod in it just stops and doesnt have the spring feeling like it normally should. what could this problem be? hope to hear back from you soon. thanks
Sorry, I can't really tell you, not having worked on it. And it's not a "push" rod. It pulls. It could be the thing is just worn out. Maybe weak spring. These were not super solid hubs.
Hi Rj I noticed in the description you said you were planning on making a video on overhauling this hub without a special tool. Is that still something you are thinking of doing? It would be such a life saver for me. Hope to hear back from you. Thanks
Hi RJ, I am rejuvenating a 70's era Kuwahara Apollo bike that's in pretty good shape. It has this model 3spd hub. I will have to replace the shifting cable but it looks pretty specialized with the lugs on both ends and a precise length. Do you have any suggestions on building a DIY replacement cable? Can a regular cable work, and have you ever tried to put a lug on the end of the cable so it will not pull out (in this case, the adjustment barrel at the lower end)?
I believe these Shimano hub gears do not have the thin oil port like Sturmey-Archer hubs do. Those Sturmey-Archer hubs are super low friction and probably last 100 years as long as they are oiled regularly. Is there space to add an oil port to a Shimano hub?
The 2 slot keys in my hub are the same length, I was given the hub so I don/'t know when the last time was it shifted correctly. It appears to be the same model as the one in the video but can't be sure as I can't find any ID marks. Should I grind one of the keys shorter or is there a model out there that uses 2 identical keys? I know earlier Shimano hubs used a single t shaped key.
good job RJ ! I'LL ve just bought a Raleigh with a Shimano 3 speed . It is two years old and in very good shape. When do you think It will need this service ? Although is an urban bike, I ride dusty roads quite often. Thanks a lot !!!
I need the Washer with the " Ear " for the drive side. I got this old bike and mine was missing. Do you have a parts number for that washer please? Thank you.
i have a 3 speed adult husky tricycle and the reference number on the hub SG-3C41 nexus inter 3 the problem is that the 3rd speed does not work would i need to buy the entire hub kit? hub drive? shifter/crank?
o_o oh wow ! this is what I get to look forward to doing :-/ I have a 3-speed 20 inch rim on my Banana seater bike... XD so, where can I find that special star looking tool ? apparently I need to add that to my tool box now lol. THANK... and AWESOME VIDEO ! (2 thumbs up)

Sorry, I haven't done it. Maybe some time.
@@RJTheBikeGuy I look forward to it

Please do, the tool is so rare, I can't even find it on Ebay.
They sell replacement cables for three speed setups. You can't easily just use a regular cable.
Great video - saved me a TON of head scratching! I owe you a beer or two!!
people should be sending RJ beer all the time!
Great work with the video!
I believe these Shimano hub gears do not have the thin oil port like Sturmey-Archer hubs do. Those Sturmey-Archer hubs are super low friction and probably last 100 years as long as they are oiled regularly. Is there space to add an oil port to a Shimano hub?
I see that this hub has an oil port so it did not need grease inside?
They use grease and oil.
Hello where can i get those ratchets
Would Tri-Flow work as a lubricant sub to what you are using?
No.
Hey RJ where can i get myself a ball cup removal tool? im having difficulty finding one online. thanks in advance
Not sure. They show up on ebay occasionally. They were more available on ebay when I made the video.
Really hard to find that ball cup tool.
Why not use a light grease to lubricate the parts?
I need the Washer with the " Ear " for the drive side. I got this old bike and mine was missing. Do you have a parts number for that washer please? Thank you.
+Michael “Moses” Hammer You will have to do the research. You might be able to find some parts on ebay...maybe...
i have a 3 speed adult husky tricycle and the reference number on the hub SG-3C41 nexus inter 3
the problem is that the 3rd speed does not work
would i need to buy the entire hub kit?
hub drive? shifter/crank?
That is a completely different hub. I have not worked on that one.
Beautiful piece of engineering although looks a bit more complicated than today's constructions lol
I have shimano nexus inter 3, its very different from this. I have similar video in my channel about it.
Is difficult wowza hmm I'm just going spray of wd40 hehe 🤭✨💖🌟 thanks! Was amazin✨
Superb job
o_o oh wow ! this is what I get to look forward to doing :-/ I have a 3-speed 20 inch rim on my Banana seater bike... XD so, where can I find that special star looking tool ? apparently I need to add that to my tool box now lol. THANK... and AWESOME VIDEO ! (2 thumbs up)

Maybe.

Only for a Sturmey Archer hub: ruclips.net/video/e2YDcLF_CNI/видео.html
How do you tell the difference between a 333 and a 3S? Do they use similar parts?
The models are on the hub shell. Not sure.
