How to save your bicycle ! Bike front hub complete service and overhaul
- Hello my dear cycling viewers!
Today in this video tutorial I will touch on a topic such as timely maintenance of a bicycle hub.
This is a very important lesson. You will be able to see clearly what to look for and what to do to make your bike last as long as possible!
I'll show you how to completely service and overhaul a bicycle front hub.
By examining the bicycle hub parts in great detail, we can find small points on the cone where the bicycle wheel bearing balls touch.
It is very important to replace this cone. This will save your bike!
We will also replace the grease inside the hub.
For example, we will use the popular Shimano HB-TX505 bicycle hub.
Have fun watching my dear friends!

You can polish out the marks on an angular contact bearing nut if you cannot find the exact replacement . Useful for older models .

@@NiceBikeService One thing that I will shortly bring up with "Bike Shed Boy" , from the United Kingdom is how it feels to lace wheels with progressing osteoarthritis and finger joint spurs . I am only in my 50's . Do you have any opinion on this ? A man broke my left hand and wrist two years ago when I bad a type 2 diabetes low blood sugar seizure similar to an epileptic fit in front of him at his home . I also had one after a very long bicycle ride as I couldn't stop riding easily /safely . The man that broke my bones is demanding a free bicycle and isn't happy for me to build him a red GT Avalanche custom build in his frame size . Frames in his size are hard to find at a reasonable price at the moment . The man won't pick from the collection of good mtb frames that I have in my stock inventory . He also wants a rear pannier rack to use as a pseudo mud guard in wet weather .
@@NiceBikeService I am , on a more positive note building a blue and yellow GIANT Iguana 26'er for my church minister's son Calvin . I hope that he appreciates the hard work as I complete it by this coming Saturday . I will give it to him on Sunday after the church meeting . Calvin loves surfing as well and I can take him on a social bicycle ride once a month with my TREK custom build 26'er mtb . She is very smooth to ride and can be seen at Fulcher's Cyclery , Panania , Australia on Google images .
Hello my dear Nice Bike Sservice. I'm affraid of such hubs. Can't decide where to stop screwing hub. The wheel sounds beatiful, well tightened spokes.
Reedy welcomes you to our channel. You can play around a bit and catch the moment when the axle no longer has play but rotates easily

Omg man i did not know that those round caps over the balls can be removed :(((( ty!
you mean the dust covers?
@@NiceBikeService yes! Haha
Be careful and use a wider tool if remove. A narrow tool will damage them and deform.@@gabormolnar6126
Great work and great techniques. Keep uo the good work 😊
Bom ensinamento tudo novo
Obrigado pelo vosso feedback! 😘
Nice video.
Water and dust entering those cups and cones hubs WITHOUT seals are just destroing them.
"The" solution is to always clean the external part of the hubs each week in case of a duty bike and each time if it rains.
When you service the internal of a hub WITH seals there is not such things.
You could add in "the" or "a" method to set correctly the play when tihghtening the cups+counter nut.
My one is to approach by hand the threaded cup+counter nut to feal if there is too much or not enough play then choose to tighten alternatively the cup to loosen or the counter nut to tihgten the play and I do this with the shaft secured in a vice for ease of interacting on the threade cup + counter nut.
When you buy a cheap wheel the shaft is always too much tightened resulting in a quick destruction of the threaded cup.
Balls are very rarely damaged as they are the most solid part.
Cups inserted in the hub are also rarely damaged as they are bigger than the threaded ones.
The parts that are suffering the most are the external threaded cups as they are with a smaller diameter ball race.
thanks for the advice ! 😘
good job

❤️❤️❤️
it's a secret)
Great video, can you let us know what grease you are using and how to get it in the syringe?
Hey! Nice video again! Congrats! I have a question. I have some trouble. 12:25 at this point, i cant easily enought tighten the screws. One time after aaaaa little tighten it tighten more and doesnt turn freely or if i loosen aaaa little it loosens more than i want and having a little space on hub. Is there no easy tactic or tips and tricks about this?
Thank you for watching and commenting. Try unscrewing the wrench by the cone, so that it moves with the outer nut just a little bit, literally a quarter turn
Great video. Well done. If you included some affiliate links for some of the tools and products you used it would be even better.
Thank you for your comment. We do not provide advertising links. Some things in the workshop have been around for many years or are homemade. You can ask the name of what you are interested in, we will try to answer
@@NiceBikeService Thanks for the reply. I was particularly interested in the green grease you used for the hub bearings.
I'd like to point out that it's best to use something wide when removing metal shields over the bearings. If using a narrow tool the more chance of marring and damaging the seals which are a pain to replace.
Thanks for the advice. How wide should it be?
It is best to use a plastic tire lever. But in reality, you do not absolutely have to remove the cap. Spraying it with degreaser and using a cotton swab to clean inside and underneath the cap is usually enough.
@@trekkeruss I usually use a plastic tire lever as well. I do have a blind hole bearing puller as well that I will also use but it's pricey and for me was a total impulse purchase. My OCD basically requires me to remove the shield and clean it lol.
sehr gut

Amazing vid as to be expected from you! My only question would be what grease do you use? Iv seen many different types of grease but never one with a green shade like the one you use. I really want to know what brand you use and if theres any particular reason you prefer this grease. Sorry that everytime i comment i ask a question btw.

Nice, i started to restore this, but i don't find dust cap in spare parts, do you where it is possible to buy ?

The axle is usually supplied with an M9 thread (metric system, 9 mm in diameter)

Bonjour!!

Cup and cone bearings. I think last time I had those it was about 25 years ago. I don't rebuild the sealed ones
Thank you for your comment. I understand that it is quite a painstaking and dirty job.
@@NiceBikeService Not bad. Once you know how. Hardest part is to get the preload on the bearings right, tight, but not too tight
Very satisfying! Where did you get this metal tray thing in which you clean all the parts, is it from the medical field perhaps?

Assuming you know how to take care of the bike, low-end ball bearing bikes are pretty good to ride.
This is true
Great stuff but there’s no way in hell a bunch of soil will be found in your hub on your ball bearings.😂😂😂

What happens when the cones are not completely the same, with a very little difference. Is it bad?

Thank you for your comment. The balls are still in good condition. It makes sense to change them, but together with the cones.

You can buy them in online bike shops. For the workshop, we bought them in bulk in our country

Thank you for your feedback! 😘
you could have put a little more grease to start coming out and make a seal against the dust that had entered the bearing
possibly
@@JavierVargasBGyou dont need to grease sealed bottom bracket bearings but you should put grease at the contact points to keep water and dirt outside, yeah dirt sticks into the surface of the grease but it will cant go farther that that, so it may not even reach the outside of the bearing seals. If you outside bearing bb greasing as a type of sealing is a must.
@@JavierVargasBGyeah, there can be to much grease but thats really more important at high speed bearings, like engine powered machines. In those to much grease is similar when you try to run in water, its hard. It can cause the bearings to overheat and fail.
May I Know 5:35 liquid name please ?
This is a variant of refined gasoline, we call it "kalosha", so I understand that the analog is camping gasoline or coleman (camping) fuel

These Shimano hubs been the bane of my existence in my road bike... Every single rainy ride needed cleaning and relube xD
They are not so delicate, they have some resistance to moisture.
@@NiceBikeServiceI live on the seaside, so rain came with a bit of salt and sand, 6 months in and it was seriously pitted. (and so were the freehub ones) I ended up swapping the hubs for cartridge ones. they tend to last a lot longer before salt water does a number on them. 😁
But i suppose the unsealed shimano ones do fine on drier situations.
cheers!
@@cheetocatto01I use a lot more grease than shown here to do the trick. Grease serves three purposes: lubricate, prevent corrosion and seal the bearing. Also, a thick (ep3) grease designed for seaside/marine use (such as marine grease) works better than generic multi use (ep2) grease. Still probably not as resilient as good sealed cartridges, I agree. Cheers!
