The front pump's job is to fill the converter with fluid. It provides the pressure necessary to engage gears. You don't have to "pre-fill" a converter.

    • @dntlss

Its like packing bearings, you could get a Masters from Harvard or Standford on it and make a RUclips video and people will say you are doing it wrong, some people that are master mechanics absolutely positively swear on filling a converter before running it and some dont, that will never change.
like a car battery on the floor, ive had a few old timers when i was younger yell at me "Get that battery of the floor!!!!", that has been debunked thanks to the internet, another one that blew my mind was the crankshaft thing,i have read extensively that in reality you dont have to stand a crank on its end but heck i still do, reason a lot of people do is because it saves space not because it will warp, anyhow, i just think its interesting all the different ways of doing things people have.

@@BLACKEDOUTVIK No need. Like the OP said the pump will fill the converter. There's enough assembly lube in the converter for initial start up. 43 years in transmissions and I have never prefilled a converter and never had a problem.

easier way is to just spin the converter with the trans standing on end, and it will seat itself while spinning. should drop 2-3 times while spinning to reach the fully seated position.

I think more emphasis on the importance of the placement of the Flywheel should have been addressed. The bellhousing is properly aligned with the centerline of the crank shaft and the flywheel is against the crankshaft (parallel to crank shaft flange). If the flywheel is not properly aligned you'll end up with all the same issues again. In order to get a proper alignment with little runout, I think it's the most important part of beginning the entire installation of the torque converter and will make the install that much easier when you move onto the Bellhousing alignment.

    • @askcramer500

I didn't talk about clutch pressure plate and flywheel alignment because this was a video on properly installing a torque converter in a transmission. The converter gets bolted to a flex plate not a flywheel so i didn't include flywheel info in the video.

I have the 4T65E out and don't see any problem with the torque converter, torque converter seal or the o-ring on the input shaft. But the pump shaft seems very loose. End play is 1.7 mm and the shaft can be easily pushed to one side or the other of the input shaft that surrounds it. The shaft can be easily rotated in either direction. The guy who fixed it says the tranny says it’s all normal that he used stronger more powerful parts so that’s what I feel and the loss of power is a pause in overdrive so I don’t go to fast ! Am I wrong to think that’s insane ? Can the wrong stall torque converter cause these issues or a transmission rebuilt the wrong way ?
