  • Not your typical upgrade, but was it a wise decision? Coming from the Sony A6400, here's why I love using the Canon C300 Mark II for my filmmaking work.

I exchanged my Lumix S5 mirrorless for a used C100 Mark II recently when the mirrorless overheated on me during a shoot...and I'm just so much happier to have the C100 as a B-cam to my C70 as I can use the same lenses ! Plus the ND and audio capabilities are 100% worth it

Nice! Not to mention how easy it is to match it to the colors of the C70 thanks to Canon’s brilliant color science. Thanks for sharing. 🔥

Correction: At time code: 3:10 you said the C300 II does not shoot RAW? Yes it does output raw via hd-sdi and you can record raw with the Shogun Inferno.

I bought a C70 when it first dropped and I found myself needing a companion camera. Found a C300 II on Sharegrid with a ton of extras for like $3400 last year. It had been very much worth it. The image is so nice it’s hard to articulate how and why but you look at it and you can tell.. it looks like 35mm film almost. Guys I shoot for have commented on it and clients have been “impressed” with the size and how it just looks complicated to operate with the buttons and cables. I do miss the 4K 60 but it’s ok I just use my C70 to get those shots.

Do you use EF glass with an adaptor or do you have separate EF and RF glass?

You don’t realize the perception value of working with pro looking tools and how that can impact the way clients perceive the work you’re doing for them. It helps that the footage looks amazing!

Nice take on the C300 M2 I have two, one I purchased new in 2015 and I’ve just picked up a 2nd. I find that the color science has a lovely timeless cine feel compared to my gimbal camera the Sony FX3. Thing is I have worked my way past needing to stay up with the latest cameras, phones etc and I work that little bit harder to get the best out of what is still a truly great image from the C300M2… especially as you say with L glass… cheers Steve

This is very interesting. Since I have my fx6 I feel much freer, more creative. When I have to work with a camera I feel like I'm not having fun, I'm missing something. With the fx6 I don't have Rolling shutter problems, I don't feel like I'm a slave to a gimbal even though I can also use it. I think it has been a definitive leap for me. A hug from Santander (we agree on Muse)

Love this, I took a similar decision coming from the Sony world where the image somehow feels so “thin/sharp” or less dense to canon with such lovely “density” in the image, lovely skin tones and color science (very close to ARRI) . It’s robust build is great and yes it does look incredible, I’ve been asked by producers too on which camera it was. They were super impressed!

This is probably the only talking head video (with next to no test footage) that I’ve ever fully watched and enjoyed. I’m rockin the Sony FX3 and love it, but havw been leaning hard toward the 300ii for years, just haven’t pulled the trigger on one yet. Your video is encouraging me. Thanks for sharing ur thoughts.

Great video man! The line up of C cameras are sweet! I’m still shooting some stuff with my C200 and C100mkii from time to time, they’re awesome 🤘🏼

Good decision. Came from Sony Mirrorless to Black Magic, then finally landed on a C300 just out of curiousity and haven't went back to anything else. Now re-circling back to Sony with the FX6. All great cameras, I love em all. Each has their strengths.

I love this. I found your review this morning. I've been debating sell our 2 C300M2's. I love these cameras and we have shot 2 features and multiple projects on them. Flat out work horses. The big question is are they worth keeping or just move on? Thoughts? The C70 is great but at this point all these cameras are just so good it doesn't matter. Or does it?

    • @theworkofjar
      @theworkofjar  Месяц назад +1

It just depends. The C70 body has advantages that the C300 II doesn’t, such as a built in monitor as opposed to a screw on monitor, and it’s just a much newer camera with a lot of new features, where as the C300 II has other advantages such as ergonomics and perhaps even some of the points I mentioned, such as the perception value increase.

I am in school and have access to a c300mk2. Should I use it for my projects or should I use bmpcc4k or my Zv-e1?

Do you miss no higher frame rates in 4K 10-bit?

    • @theworkofjar

I do yes, but I find myself being much more intentional about the shots I am getting and how long I shoot them for if that makes sense. So instead of relying on slo-mo b-roll montages to tell my story, I am finding myself holding onto moments for longer. Hope that makes sense? I also have two other cameras that can do 120FPS, and I usually bring it with me (It's a stills camera.) So if I really need super slow-mo, I'll capture it with the stills camera.

@@theworkofjar I’m really debating getting a used mark II but it would be my only camera. Just weighing up the options, even looking at pro camcorders as well.

Your comment about the ISO leads me to believe me to believe you are treating ISO on the Canon like a stills camera
Keep in mind Canon Cinema cameras shift the middle grey point when changing ISO
Ie you can get better results when you turn the ISO up in broad daylight or turn it down in dark scenes
Google 'canon c300 mark ii dynamic range chart'

I'm confused as to why we as filmmakers got sucked into buying DSLR/Mirrorless Photography cameras as opposed to Video/Camcorder style cameras (me included). For god sakes, even camcorders would assist us in the jobs more effectively, from both an ergonomic and usability perspective, more so than lets say a Sony a7s iii for example. When I mention camcorders this includes ENG cameras as well, like the FS5/7. (obviously not the FX3/30)
-Talking head interviews: built-in XLR, most dual. (if you read XLR and then said to yourself "who the hell needs XLR, you clearly have never heard the difference between XLR and 3.5)
-Lenses: built-in parfocal lenses. All camcorder lenses are parfocal. Designed for smooth zooming and maintaining focus.
-Lenses: Servo Zoom. No need to mention how much a servo zoom lens by itself would cost.
    -Insane built-in stabilization
-Built-in (some variable) NDs. Once again if you're saying who the hell needs that, you've clearly never experienced built-in NDs. And no, Canon's adapter slide in NDs don't count. Slide in NDs do not properly stack up with the convenience to pushing a button to stop down. When I remove an ND from the adapter I still then need to stop, put the camera down, find a place to properly store the slide in ND filter, then pick the camera back up and continue as if I just didn't stop the entire set. It's no different than unscrewing filters on and off imo.
-All-in-one kit. We have spent far too long kitting out Mirrorless cameras, when everything we needed was right on a camcorder to begin with.
-Camcorders are also much cheaper. After you've kitted out your DSLR/Mirrorless camera you've most likely spent twice the amount then a Camcorder. Could've had two camcorders for CamA CamB setup for the cost of one Mirrorless camera. If you've just said in your head camcorders are not cheaper, do the math. Just the mere fact that it comes with a parfocal servo zoom lens already wins out. If you now are saying "well now I can't change out lenses". You might have a point, that is until you've done documentary work with a zoom/parfocal lens. You might change your mind.
The ONLY 2 reasons why Camcorders lose out is:
    - Small Sensors. Harder to get subject separation. But if you know how to manipulate the scene and shoot zoomed in you can still achieve this.
    - Small Sensor = low light performance is not as good as Super35/APSC/Full Frame
    - You don't look sexy in front of your other filmmaking buddies with a camcorder.
I cant think of any other reasons why to not shoot videos with a video camera.

If you're referring to a Canon C300mkll as a camcorder, then no, they do not have a built in lens. If you want a parfocal lens, you need to put a cinema lens on it. "L-Series" lenses, like the ones that this video was discussing, are NOT parfocal, because they are designed to be "still camera" lenses.
