All-star audience attends Bob Dylan's historic Isle of Wight comeback concert (1969)

Happy 82nd birthday to Bob Dylan!
On 1 September 1969, ITN reported on Bob Dylan’s historic comeback gig at that year’s Isle of Wight festival at Wootton Creek on - you guessed it - the Isle of Wight. Dylan had been little-heard-of since a reportedly near-fatal motorcycle crash in July 1966, an incident which is, like many aspects of Dylan’s life, steeped in mystery and much mythologised. Dylan’s three-year hiatus from public performance coupled with rumours that he would be joined on stage by one or all of the Beatles created a hype around the concert that any artist would struggle to live up to; Dylan, being Dylan, didn’t even try. In the end, no Beatles joined Dylan on stage, and he played for just over an hour. As can be seen in this footage, George Harrison, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono, and Pattie Harrison were seated in the VIP section of the audience. ITN’s cameras didn’t catch some of the festival’s other high-profile attendees, namely Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Jane Fonda, Pink Floyd’s Syd Barrett, Elton John, and Maureen Starkey.
The result of Dylan’s short and understated show, as is captured by this report’s interviews with festival goers returning to the mainland, was mixed reviews - another experience that has over the decades become associated with Dylan’s unique and uncompromising performance style. Despite his enduring ability to divide a room, Dylan is commonly regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of all time, his music having influenced the biggest names in popular music in the last 60 years, from the Beatles to Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Adele, and Ed Sheeran.
Director James Mangold announced at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival that a biopic of Bob Dylan is in the works. A Complete Unknown is set to star Timothée Chalamet as Dylan, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Benedict Cumberbatch as folk legend Pete Seeger, and Elle Fanning in a role that is yet to be revealed.
