Wool is cruelty free, especially if purchased from reputable sources. It gathered by literally just brushing the rabbits to remove the shed fur. Those rabbits are treated like royalty by most spinners.
Wool from a reputable source is not only cruelty free, but biodegradable.
Most wool is from sheep, though sometimes it can come from other animals such as rabbits etc. just not as common at all.
Generally, these animals are often used until a certain age and then sent to meat industry etc and killed.
Before they are sent to be killed, they are often mutilated (at least sheep) for various reasons. No pain killers, and often lots of blood shed. “Humane” is extremely hard to come by and marketing can trick you in an instant. It’s best to watch the entire process, from the specific company or seller, yourself and decide.
