- Monitoring and Instrumentation Specialist Brian Jastram explains how a tipping-bucket rain gauge works. This particular model is a Texas Electronics TR-525USW Rainfall Sensor. The MWMO uses a network of rain gauges like this one to collect localized precipitation data inside the watershed.

Hi, Betsy! One tip equals 0.01” of precipitation. I.e., 100 tips equals 1 inch of rain.
