    On barbers not being mind readers: On my very first trip to my favorite barber, I sat in the chair and she asked me, "Do you want your usual?" I had no idea who she thought I was, but I said, "Sure." She may not have been a mind reader, but she could apparently see the future as the cut was exactly what I wanted. Sadly, she's retired now.

    I think finding and supporting a good barber is just as great as finding and supporting a tailor. I try to tip generously and once you’ve found one that suits you, it’s a pleasure having someone who knows how to make you look your best. Also, I’ve found being a good customer (keeps appointments and times and tips kindly) will grant you the occasionally needed emergency appointment or service. Great video!

      Depends on the barber i think
      Over the years barbers have used whitewalls and fade to describe my haircut so now I just tell them the guard size. "1 1/2 on the back and sides and enough off the top to .make it even"

    When I get ok to good service I always over tip (20%+) for three reasons (two self serving-ish, one positive): Being a good tipper gets you remembered in a positive light and liked, people that like you tend to work harder for you, and some extra dollars aren't a big deal but the person receiving it will hopefully feel appreciated and it may make a hard day easier to get through.

      I always tip well too, even if it’s not expected or necessary (in the case of countries where it’s not common practice). Being supportive of the staff who are doing what you want always gets you further, especially if you find yourself in a pinch they’re more willing to help you out.

    I think it's very rude to take a phone call while in any situation like this. I used to have patients taking phone calls during appointments with me in general practice. I had 10 minute appointments and their calls would often make me late for the next patients. It's rude and thoughtless. Turn your phone off for the time you're in your appointment, just call people back after if you've missed their call.

    Know what you want... I cut my hair with the same guy for 45 years, when I had to change it, unfortunately, and I was asked how you want it cut, I had NO idea! For 40 years I would just sit and my barber would cut it! It took a while to get things right with the new guy...
    As for looking at the mirror, I had no problem whatsoever with that, I'm nearsighted and I take my glasses off to get a haircut, so I won't see anything anyway lol

      Can I ask whether you ever tip anyone for anything over there? I live in Canada where service industries do pay at least minimum wage (we don’t depend on tips to survive, it’s a bonus) but I still give tips to anyone who helps me with physical labour.

    • @givememynamebackbigG
      @givememynamebackbigG 2 года назад

      @@jenniferelyse5134 Tipping wait staff for a sit down meal is pretty common, especially if you've come in a large group. A rate of around 10-15% is typical. Tipping bar staff isn't completely unheard of, though with almost everyone paying by card now you would have to go out of your way to do it. I'm struggling to think of any other services where you might pay a tip.

      I really don't understand how american tipping culture got to this point really. Tipping at a restaurant is something that is common pretty much everywhere but in America you're basically expected to tip else the waiter won't make any reasonable money. But tipping babers is what really surprised me, in a restaurant you're paying full price for the food and the service is a bonus but in a barbershop the service is everything, so if I'm expected to tip what's the full price for? Why just not put those 10% extra in the full price to begin with if you expect everyone to pay it.

    I’ve always enjoyed these kinds of appointments, though I am fairly quiet, not really there to chat and always appreciate anyone who understands that (social anxiety re: small talk) ❤️
    While tipping isn’t mandatory here, I still do for anyone who performs any kind of physical labour for me in cash as a thank you. I don’t do it to ensure they’re given a liveable wage, it’s just out of gratitude. I was also raised to tip anyone I see regularly because they will be more willing to go the extra mile for you. My father said “I tip servers through the year so that when it comes to last minute or challenging requests or (like say valentines reservations) they’re more often than not willing to oblige”.

    I still don’t really know where a barber is around me so I don’t even really know what a barber place that doesn’t have women really even looks like. Why would it be bad if your SO dictates your cut? They are the one who is supposed to see you all the time so I don’t see why they don’t have some say in your look, unless they like how you style it naturally. I also don’t understand the tipping part. Why is tipping so common? Why not just price it accordingly?

    If you have to tell a (presumably new to you) barber what you want, depending on your barber to know what you need once the cutting starts is ridiculous. I may have to, since without my glasses I am blind beyond about six inches, but if you can see you should give the barber any feedback on your inadequate description before the start. After your barber really knows what you wanted, maybe you don’t need to worry.
