  • Here is an installation video for any customers who have purchased a Sempu torque sensing bottom bracket from ebikes.ca or one of our dealers. Robbie elaborates on the installation procedure where a few key steps are different from installing a regular bottom bracket.
    The torque sensors are available from here:

    2-weeks too late for me but the tip at 4:45 about the alignment dot is extremely helpful. I am going to pull the crank arm and check to see if I installed the cranks incorrectly. Thanks for the video!

    I recommend the use of a stepped drill bit like a Unibit to follow a 1/8" pilot. Using a standard style bit, going from small to large, the hole will be out of round, the chaser bit may bind and cut a notch or have otherwise crappy looking cuts. The bit isn't cheap (buy a name brand) but whenever you need to enlarge a hole in metal or acrylic the results are perfect. It will leave a slight taper to the hole on thick material if only cut from one side and you must de-bur the back side (or on flat stock clean it up with a chisel).

    Could you cut the connector off and solder it back on to avoid needing to drill such a large hole? How many conductors are in there?

    • @fun_ghoul
      @fun_ghoul 4 года назад

      You could, but the closer the wires are to the edges of the hole, the more likely they are to be cut! In either case, I'd recommend some kind of chemical goop (hot glue, silly-cone or if you're really brave/confident in your installation, maybe urethane).

    • @fun_ghoul
      @fun_ghoul 2 года назад

      @@colincampbell4261 I mean yes, if you're cutting it anyway, but the durometer of the usual grommets is insufficient for all-weather punishment season after season (IMO). If just one of those wee wires is nipped on a throttle-less installation, your customer is walking home, so it's best to immobilise to the greatest extent possible.
      -Anyway, the POS in this video is obsolete for many installs with the advent of small, slick add-on torque sensors of the type Grin has now added.- [EDIT: Brain fart; I was thinking of the PAS sensor...d'oh!] I don't have one, but I'm [still] jealous!

  • @ryanseidel7436

    Could you route the cable up into the seat tube and out an enlarged bolt holes originally used for the water bottle holder?

    • @GrinTechnologies
      @GrinTechnologies  5 лет назад

      Most bottom bracket shells are not drilled out up to the seat tub tubing. But if you have a bike where this is hollowed out, and you fed a snake/string through the tubing first in order to pull the cable up through that opening, then yes that could in principle be done.
      Note that it would be a PITA to work on if you ever needed to remove parts for service though. That's the case with most through-the-frame cable routing.

    • @fun_ghoul
      @fun_ghoul 4 года назад

      If you or anyone wants to do it this way, but your frame doesn't (yet) have the requisite hole, look for "installer drill bits". They come in lengths sufficient to surpass any seat tube.

      The steel road bike frame I used I had converted years ago to full-size travel bike with S&S couplers, and had a hole in the bb shell at the bottom of the down tube, so I drilled holes on the bottom of the down tube just in front of the BB shell and just behind the head tube, routed the bb sensor wire through the internal hole into the down tube and out the whole at the top of the down tube to the CA, and routed the wire connecting the CA with the controller in the top down tube hole and out the bottom down tube hole. Very clean internal e-bike routing. The only zip tie is on the chain stay for the hub motor cable. The S&S couplers make it easy to connect the plugs inside the down tube.

    How is this a torque sensor when the crank set is not attached to the body of the sensor but only slid onto the axle along with the pedal? When you pedal, the chain is going to pull against the axle which is connected to the pedal directly. How can it measure with how much force you need to pedal? I have just finished installing my new "torque" sensor which seems to have the same "feature" and I realized that I could've just bought a simple PAS.

    • @GrinTechnologies
      @GrinTechnologies  6 лет назад +3

      Hey Daniel , it measures the resulting flex on the spindle from the downwards force on the pedal cranks, as opposed to the actual torsion. So correct it is not a true torque transducer but it does a very effective job of measuring the forces present when a rider is torquing on either the left or right pedals. This is explained this along with some diagrams on this page here:

    Hi,
    what is the purpose of plastic spacer? .. is it important for torque measurement?
    thanks

    • @GrinTechnologies
      @GrinTechnologies  6 лет назад +1

      No, rather it has notches and alignment slots and plays a very critical role to stop the body of the torque sensor from turning as you tighten the drive side cup. Otherwise, the body of the torque sensor could rotate and damage the cable as it pulls it through the hole in the BB.

    Should I be concernederned about water from the street splashing up into the bottom bracket now that a hole's been drilled into the frame?

    • @GrinTechnologies
      @GrinTechnologies  5 лет назад +3

      If anything it's the opposite, now you have a drain hole so that water which gets into the frame tubing or the seat tube has a nice easy escape and won't pool up. Just make sure that the hold is drilled at the actual bottom, and not towards the front or back sides.

    Out of curiosity, are there any precautions I should take while drilling the cable hole into the BB shell on an aluminum frame?

    • @GrinTechnologies
      @GrinTechnologies  5 лет назад

      Not really, aluminum is much easier to drill than steel and easier to file off any sharp burrs too.

    • @Kane615
      @Kane615 5 лет назад

      Thanks! I was just worried drilling an aluminum frame might be lead to cracks in the BB shell considering how soft the material is.

    • @GrinTechnologies
      @GrinTechnologies  5 лет назад

      I suppose that's a valid thing to think about. But most BB's already have a drain hole in them anyways, and the bottom center of the tube like this is not where the crack producing stresses are concentrated which would tend at the chainstays and downtube welds.

    • @fun_ghoul
      @fun_ghoul 4 года назад

      @@Kane615 Any metal is prone to cracking if you drill/cut it, but that's mostly related to surface finish when you're done. The deburring tool in the video may be too aggressive for aluminum, especially if you're new to using it. Smooth the hole with a round file and, ideally, bevel it. Paradoxically, aluminum prefers a _coarser_ file than steel; finer files load up too fast!

    are there any BB torque sensors that work with bafang bb mid-drives? (bbs02 or bbshd?)

    • @GrinTechnologies
      @GrinTechnologies  5 лет назад

      Almost be definition no, since the BBS mid-drive systems already include the bottom bracket spindle with all the associated gearing on them. You can't replace the bottom bracket in a BBSXX setup, since the BB is an integral part of that setup unfortunately. If you get a mid-drive kit that drives the right side chainring, like a Cyclone or ecospeed etc., then in principle you can use the THUN/NCTE style torque sensors since they measure just the torsion on the left crank and that is decoupled from the motor power.

    • @GrinTechnologies

      Using the V3 Cycle Analyst you can add a torque sensor to virtually any motor controller once you hook it up so that the throttle signal to the controller is coming from the CA3's throttle output.
