Pokémon: The First Movie - Explained

- Lets talk about Pokémon: The First Movie and what Mewtwo's plan teaches us about our individuality and place in the world. I'm sure you'll disagree with some of the points I make so let me know in the comments!
I think people forgotten that this is Mewtwo’s story. It was never really about Ash trying to stop him. Mewtwo is the protagonist of the movie. In the original Japanese version, Mewtwo was trying to find his identity about whether he’s real or a clone.
Can be easy to forget when Ash was always the main protagonist that we were following throughout the series when the movie came out. But yeah, this really was Mewtwo’s story for as much as he also served as being a main antagonist for Ash and his friends to deal with.
28:08 - .. Even continuing into it, even until it then becomes a terrible, hypocritical version of its COUGHSERIESwizardscoast - self..
Yeah, and originally Mew was an absolute menace of an asshole to Mewtwo, straight up taunting the guy!
I cried so hard in the theater when Pikachu tried to wake ash after becoming stone, incredibly heavy for a kids movie. Truly a memory I will never forget
*''.. Dad gave me this. Fifth birthday. He said, ''Childhood's over the moment you know you're gonna die.'' - Top Dollar, The Crow* +
My friend cried so hard and I just laughed don't know why it was so funny to me but my buddy was broken hearted over it.
Pokemon the first movie is surprisingly deep for a kids show and ages timelessly. mew-two just asked what we all ask ourselves at a young age. why do i exist.
Im still asking myself this question 😂
I don't know if the footage is reversed to avoid copyright or whatever, but I actually love the vibe it gives to see things go backwards while the recap is done. Great vibe.
@@LibraryLateFees it was done for copyright- the video is clearly fair use but the Pokémon company are super brutal with their automatic takedowns haha!
That being said I’m really glad you enjoyed the vibe that the reversed footage brought!
I'm not crying, you're crying.
Ohhh how I cried!!!!!!! 😢 😭 😢 😭
@@rewerstfd just something about the thunderbolts right now
Considering that the last thing Mewtwo did under Giovanni's control was to torture Gary Oak and his Pokemon into unconsciousness, Ash was lucky Mewtwo abandoned Giovanni when he did. Otherwise, there's a good chance that, during his gym battle, Giovanni would have taken things to the next step--and seen if Mewtwo would obey his command to kill a human.
I remember seeing the episode long time ago that ash was about to battle Giovanni. Mewtwo was in a room with all the gear on and ash was trying to figure out who and what it was. I am a big Mewtwo fan and I’m loyal to him as I still think he’s the best. His story, his looks and powers will always be superb. But that one scene when ash first saw him is hard to find… I tried recording it that one small scene with a VHS tape but it never came on again😅
This is a really well made video! Thank you so much!
Thank you!
The tragedy of Mewtwo is so deep, this movie was so deep in many themes like the meaning of life the most prominent.
Yes!! I just rewatched Mewtwo strikes back in my adulthood and it became one of my favorite movies. Mewtwo is such a great character! I'm so glad to see other people appreciate it as much as I do.
This video is awesome, hoping it gets more views 💗💗💗💗
What is this spooky coincidence, I just visited parents and found an old vhs-tape that I recorded Pokemon 2 on in 2000. We watched it with my own kid.
I almost can't decide if I prefer Pokemon 2000 over the first movie. Both classics for sure
Personally it's the 2nd one for me, simply because I saw it at an age that I actually remember something about and it had an impact. The flute melody (played by Melody) from that movie still lives rent free in my mind hha. Great video btw!!
@@crispy9566i hope your kid appreciattes the moment
The uncut story of mewtwos origin adds a lot to his backstory
I agree, I'm not sure if there's more outside of the extended cut of the first movie, but seeing his creation, and what he speaks about with the scientists daughter via telepathy adds a lot of sympathy for him.
I swear the animation is soo peak i honestly forgotten how beautiful this movie is haven't watched it since i was a kid
I want my old self back this 32 year old me IS disturbing
Mewtwo is a metaphor for the nephliim.
They will crush your skull, and you shall bruise their heel.
Mewtwo didnt know about EVs…only IVs.. his new pokemon just needed battle experience
IVs did not exist. I think you mean DVs.
I still feel so sad for Mewtwo, I wish I could have helped him. With the right guidance, he would have had a better life and be actually the strongest in the world.
I’m sure pretty much anybody with a good set of morals and principles, would’ve wanted to help someone like Mewtwo at some point in their lives.
Wonderful and beautifully put
AmaIng video. Keep em coming!!! Subbed
I like the way you say “directly” and also the video too
i remeber gathering with my friends at the youth center i went to one cool adult there rented this movie for us to watch after school.
Damn the first two mins hit my feelers
The first two Pokemon movies were great, they truly felt like unique cinema experiences, but by the 3rd movie and forward, it just felt like the stories for the movies were just weaker, and it started feeling like those Disney direct to VHS movies, where things were low effort and were just a cash grab. Being a 90s kid was truly an amazing experience, since the hype and everything related to the first two Pokemon movies could only be experienced once in a lifetime, but it is good that recently efforts were made to restore some things of the past, such as the flash game that was developed by WB in order to promote the Pokemon 2000 movie, that since it was a first person adventure thing, it scared even Nintendo and Gamefreak so much that they issued a cease and desist order to the development team, and for a long time the game was just forgotten media, but now its completely playable again so that people can relive that nostalgia.
I agree, although I do remember enjoying the 3rd Pokemon Movie, the one with Entei, I haven't seen it in a very long time so I might just be looking through rose tinted glasses.
I feel you, mewtwo...
When you also watch the movie that comes after this one, the Mewtwo returns one, that is only on DVD as I can remember and actually see the part 4KIDS deleted from the original Japanese movie where you see Mewtwo and a girl. The whole story feels so much more complete, then just seeying this movie in the cinemas or on television. Like, there is so much to be told. And I still feel so sad for Mewtwo and so angry at Team Rocket for what they've done. I wish Mewtwo and his clones wouldn't be so seperated and enjoy live with us. They deserve better.
That part is included in the extended release of the first movie too, I used a few of the clips in this video. But I hadn’t seen it until researching for making this. It’s a real shame it wasn’t included in every edition as it adds a lot of important context to the movie!
Its been a while since I watched this movie, but I do remember that in the original english release (idk if it was in the Japanese theatrical version) in order to explain what happened in the end without the stuff the re-release has, the harbor master tells everyone about a storm just like the one Mewtwo created, that once occurred that killed many humans and pokemon, and after the storm, the pokemon cried and everyone came back
I can't believe how lucky I was my parents brought my brother and I to the first Pokémon movie, I admit I cried when ash turned to stone XD
Mewtwo is my favorite Pokémon, and he's one of the only ones I find relatable, aside from Lucario from the Mystery of Mew, Zoroark in Master Of Illusion, and a few others. But if Mewtwo is half human, then that makes him my kin.
Well what would that make Ditto a failed Mew Clone ?
This a a really great video.
Great Video ☺️👍🏻
Good work
I wish Pokémon still made movies like this. This movie is more mature, deep and engaging than detective Pikachu… zzz
I wish love and friendship would be real in this world.
it kinda is but not the anime level haxx it is.
1:32 About to roll up and vibe
Actually, when I was a child, I did cry a bit, but not as much as I do now as an adult. Somehow, certainly with the original English song Brother my Brother, it just hits so much harder. And then the fact Pikachu actually cries, no everyone cries. I mean it's just impossible not to cry. Certainly if you actually have felt/experienced what losing someone you love means. I for example do not even need to hear anything now and still, cry. It's such a shocking/harsh scene, so painfull/sad, all that useless violence that shouldn't be needed, very interesting to actually see aired in a 4Kids country. I mean. It's just to much.
Great video bud made my druve to eork sad but entertaining lol
Mewtwo's story feels incomplete without him remembering Aitwo (amber)
Who or what is that?
@@theodorejenkins6066The little girl that talks to Mewtwo during his origin story, who was also the daughter of the lead scientist in the lab where he was created.
It’s mentioned in the video.
I'm always fascinated me how they made this movie with such purpose but seemed to have lost that direction after such a positive reception. This movie was entertaining to both kids and adults. It contained a deep message. Where'd that purpose go? Did they just get caught up with marketing over story telling? As a child who grew up watching the original series, it never reached this level of depth after the first season
That’s just the point too. When you’re a child, that kind of realization doesn’t reach your mind until years later when you mature more.
Being a Pokemon watcher myself as a kid, a kinda tended to wonder at some point, what if they could go beyond the usual routines they always took, and went along with something deeper.
Looking back, it really makes you realize that the Pokemon did indeed actually have a lot of potential to have more serious themes, instead of repeating the same usual shenanigans we were used to.
I’ll always consider myself a fan of the Pokemon anime, but it’s the lack of more serious themes why I began switching to more mature anime as I got more exposed to it.
Great video. Excellent script and narration.
I do question why most the clips are in reverse. Is this a copyright thing?
It’s a copyright thing yeah, Pokémon are particularly brutal with their automatic takedowns!
Thanks for your comment dude, glad you enjoyed the cideo
If you didn’t cry when Pikachu cried you’re lying
There is a radio drama on you tube subbed called birth of mewtwo for those interested in mewtwo
Truly loved this movie
If mewtwo is man-made is it really legendary
Honestly what if all of the other legendaries tried to stop him? Yeah he's powerful but he's not invincible
Cheap tricks ending with the audio of that scene.
I didn't consent to being born either, but here I am part of the economically exploited workforce typing up comments on pokemon videos on the magic internet!
That’s exactly the point: NOBODY can consent to ever being born, let alone what lead to you coming into the world.
And yet at the same time, the mere fact that we are born is a grand miracle in of itself.
Eventually, depending on the nurture and experiences we go through individually, we come to realize that our lives are much more invaluable than we think they are.
Such a overanalysation of a children's movie. Loving it.
Brilliant ❤
i really wish they gave us a post story camoaign based on mewtwos movie where we battle his clone mons and he even uses a cloned version of polemon trainer reds teams and onky after we beat that team can we face mewtwo to catch him. multiple phases of him going through his mega forms still losing because he is alone
there shouldn't be need to put a spoiler warning on a movie everyone's seen,if you've not seen any of the movies how are they even considered a true fan of the show?
Wow thanks for the spoiler warning, this movies been on my to watch list for decades now it seems. Ill have to watch this video in the future. Later!
You’re in for a wild ride! I hope you
Enjoy it!
Did Mewtwo turn back time at the end of this movie , thereby having time manipulation before Celebi and Dialga
as far as I can tell he just teleported everybody back to the harbour and wiped their memories, rather than turning back time.
Speaking of mewtwo, how about giygas from earthbound/mother. In the first mother game, he kinda resembles mewtwo a bit, strong in psychic abilities, hatred towards humanity but for a different reason, not going to spoil it but you should play the mother/earthbound trilogy, they are well written stories who tell a complex story. If you get the chance after playing the first two games that are out internationally, maybe make a review of giegue/giygas if you get the chance or of the mother trilogy if you finish mother 3 fan translation.
Supposedly Giovanni IS a pokemon
Bro you asking when I became me bro, that was when I stole my first pokemon from a trainer on Pokémon Colosseum. I was probably worse than snatchems team when it came to taking other pokemon but hey I took care of my stolen mon even though trainers got all mad

This is just a recap lol. No deeper thoughts were explored.
What is the point of reversing every scene, that shit is annoying
We really didn't deserve this movie. Pokemon didn't deserve being so sincere.... I remember entering the theater as a ten year old boy, and leaving as something else
The movie changed you. Movies these days are mostly surface-level slop compared to such a masterpiece.
This is the movie we deserve, but what is the movie we need?
We need Meowth (the translator) in Gaza.
