He has his moments where he is a better man/father, but they are so few and far between and are never sincere because he always reverts back to his usual behaviour. He completely screwed up Ben's life from a young child and has never stopped doing it. Destroyed his self-esteem and sense of self-worth. Pushed him to beyond breaking point. And when he found out Ben was Gay...well...I have never wanted a fictional character to die quite as much as I did Phil. He was disgusting and cruel and downright vile to him. When Paul died, Phil still refused to call him Ben's boyfriend and in fact just called him his friend. Ben did not take that well...at all and lashed out physically at Phil and had to dragged away where he continued punching the door and then completely broke down. Even then, in seeing his son in so much pain and distress over the loss of the man he loved, he still had to coaxed to go and hug him. Yes, Phil has got better accepting Ben is Gay over the years, but the scars are still there I really like the Ben Character. He is so complicated and so conflicted. There are basically two sides to Ben, there is his "Phil" side, the one he uses when he is being the hard man, and then there is the "Ben" side, which is the one he shows around Callum, Lexi, Lola, Jay and Kathy. The only people he trusts and who truly accept him. There is no denying, Ben has some darkness and rage in him. When he was with Paul, he said life was better, he was better. But from when Paul died, Ben just wasn't the same. The trauma of his first love dying in such a horrific way, he blamed himself for mouthing off to the attackers and has since convinced himself that he is not worthy of love, that he will only hurt and destroy anyone who comes near. Phil said to him once "You aren't good for anything", and Ben really believes that he isn't good for anything or anyone. That he is nothing but bad news, that no one could or should love him. I am hoping Callum can make him see that there is so much in him worth loving, that there is so much good in him if he would just let it out instead of burying under his tough guy image. His desperate need, still, to please his father and somehow gain his love and respect. Callum has already been a great influence on him, convincing him to give up his dodgy deals and go straight, and he has. He has been so happy with Callum and it is so clear how much he loves him and how much Callum loves him, even if they haven't actually said it yet
