I love how every solo guthrie does is a one-off improvisation in his mind, playing purely from the soul, yet to us mortals we need them all tabbed out as if it were a pre-composed and pre-structured song!
This is probably the most soulful and flowing solo over a blues progression ever conceived. There is no possibility for 99.99% of us guitar players to ever even approximate what this dude is doing.
He quotes a Cannonball Adderley lick at 1:46 The Adderley Trill is an excellent lick for saxophone (You can hear him play it in the song Jive Samba), never heard it on the guitar. Good job on getting out that sound Guthrie!
I only recently learn who this man is and i am now always sitting in pure awe of his skill and tone. What a true guitar master this man is Thank you to everyone who has posted vids as my world is now so much fuller musically. peace
just discovered Guthrie Govan last night. cant believe i havent heard of him all this while..think ive watched this video a hundred times since last night
dude this helps those that wanna see what's going on from the players perspective and it makes it easy to see what notes he's playing.it's really nice and smart of him to do this.
Great Lesson! I learned so much. I practically have this whole jam wired,...because of this "Lesson". I found the close up of him playing upside down particularly useful. And only €10 a month to access more Lessons like this one? Sign Me Up Baby!!!!!
That is quite possibly the happiest most intricate blues I have ever heard! I will only say WOW and why has Guthrie never been part of the Satch, Vai G3 yearly event?? It is a crime!!! He is one of the most melodic, modal and free playing guitarists I have ever seen! One comment below suggests this is why he should put down the guitar forever? For me this only inspires me even more... I may never be that technical or great but I love the way I feel when I'm playing! So Nothing else matters!
I have never heard anything.. so incredible, other than other GG video samples. His technique is stratospheric as is his heart, and that is what makes him fantastic by biblical proportions. An epic, epic, epic player and individual.
Well thx and glad you liked my channel.I also agree that we are arguing over unimportant things.Still havent found an act in any genre in western music that its work isnt traced back to scales one way or another though.Even the band that plays three chord tunes is essentially using scales cause those three chords came from harmonizing some scale. They didnt appear out of nowhere or randomly sound good together.Find me something in western music that it isnt traced back to some scale.I cant.
Très belle initiative que ce "Bendnote" que je viens de découvrir ! La camera "renversée" est juste super, plus besoin de tablatures à tel point la vidéo est efficace ! Je vous souhaite une bonne continuation ;)
Like any other "hobby" "skill" whatever you would like to call it, it takes time and depending on how much time you put into it, it could take years. I've been playing guitar for around 9 years now and every day I pick up the guitar I still learn something new that I haven't tried before. Never give up everyone isn't Yngwie Malmsteen over night :D
@@JeanFontanille Wow you're still replying to comments? Thanks! Yeah that seems to be the progression. I'm really surprised I hadn't encountered it before after years of playing blues.
On bendnote.com in few days. The JamLesson is the video, the interview, backing track, partition, forum, and ask questions to Guthrie. BendNote is focus on musical practice and interaction with greatest guitarists.
Well there's fast licks and then there's Guthrie Govan fast; which is incredibly clean and articulate. Wow, first time I've really heard him play anything like that. Caught a few snippets here and there but Wow. I said Wow already didn't I? Like he said it's ok to leave more space than he did but if I could play like that, I'd have have myself a little fun too!
I always disbelieve anything that comes after or before "Believe me", and in this case, people listen to Schenberg and think it's sublime. Anyway I insist that I think we mostly agree and we are arguing over unimportant subtleties. I like your channel by the way, nice advice on the "to metronome or not to metronome"!
OMG this is so good! very tasteful and soulful and as always with Guthrie's signature fiery lines. I've been wondering if B.B King or Clapton or other blues legends hear Guthrie's blues, particularly this one video sounds like the right one to pick, what would they think about it? I know Clapton is not anti fast lines since he's a known fan of Albert Lee. and why not some 'fire' in blues right? as long as the soul is present, and clearly is here, lots of it!
How can you know there's not very much passion? How do you know exactly what guitarist is feeling? He's played for about 40 years, do you think he doesn't have very much passion? As far as I know, the only reason somebody plays for that long is if they love it and have enormous amounts of passion.
Hello there !! Guthrie is awesome !! Somebody could explain me a little more this blues progression what are the chords, what are the harmonic relationship between them please ? Thank you very much ! :)
Here is the guitar lesson with Guthrie ! BendNote call them "JamLesson" with transcription and backing track. With a Premium Account, you will access to all JamLessons and ask pedagogical questions to Artists and other BendNote Members.
I think we agree. Of course scales are important! The discussion started from the statement that they are the bulding blocks of music, and I don't think that stands on it's own if rhythm is left out. Furthermore I think it's more important to have good rhythm than to have a good command on scales. However, it is obvious that you can't play any non-percussion instrument without using scales so yes, they are super important. By the way there is plenty of music not derived from the major scale.
I think we get to the point were we differ: I think there's rhythm, for which you need to produce a sound. Then you want variety in rhythm, so you pick different sounds, so you get pitches -> notes -> scales, then you want simultaneous sounds and you get harmony. In this view, rhythm is the most fundamental aspect, even though you need the three. Also splitting something into three does not mean that the three parts are equal (in size, importance, whatever).
I agree with chapealesmirriau - music is a lot of different things. Cut down to the basic elements it is notes played in a certain sequence and with a certain rhythm. Scales are only a way to categorize groups of notes that sound great in user-friendly chunks that are easier to relate to and use. First came the music and then the scale - not the other way around.
True that. Just remember that (afaik) Guthrie picked up the guitar first when he was 4, meaning he had some advantage there. Well surely, he has an amazing talent too (he has very good hearing for example), but only a very few people in the world are on the level as Guthrie, you don't have to reach that to be a good guitar player.
guthrie has such interesting licks! i have a decent guitar ear (at least when it comes to bluesy leads) but even when watching where his fingers going and use my ear i just can't replicate them! However, i would suggest trying to mimick his licks anyway because that way you end up with your own interesting licks!

Another kick ass Guthrie Govan video, love this guy ! Can't wait for the next Aristocrats album or Guthrie second solo album !
Guthrie you are a joy to watch and to listen to.

spectacular style ! I love the way this guy plays !
I wanna play upside down too.
hahahaha but will it still be considered blues, to the purists, if your playing physically inverted? lol
I can only say Albert King at that point ;)
Thank you very much BendNote for free lesson of this incredible performance, I love Guthrie Govan
genius to make it upside down! so easy to feel!!

Bonjour. Les sous-titres sont disponiblent sur BendNote en cliquant sur le bouton ST sur le Player.
Merci !
Totally agree, Jimmy Bruno's dvds were godsend. He too agrees with this stance.
It provides an excellent view of his right hand technique, which I think is missing from a lot of these videos
Beautiful !
1:15 is most insanely amazing bend i have ever seen or heard!!
so creative
the upside down vid really helps. feels like im playing. guthrie rocks! \m/
I agree. It's a lesson in humility.
Guthrie is just the BEST... no more to say
...you can add a few more...this is just great!
HE IS A GOD OF MODERN BLUES GUITAR
lots of cool techniques here, lotsa fun !
Which song is Guthrie talking about at 2:49?
Hello, I think he is talking about classic blues song like Stormy Monday :-)
@@JeanFontanille Wow you're still replying to comments? Thanks! Yeah that seems to be the progression. I'm really surprised I hadn't encountered it before after years of playing blues.
Always awesome!
Good idea to put the top of the video with reversed view
He is on fiyah!!!
love the idea of the top view of the fretboard
I think the same thing regularly. Woody is a great way to describe his tone.
@0:30 ... that harmonic was deliberate. look at his right hand!!!! YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!
unique! Love it.
this is awesome
Its Just so Damn Amazing!
love the "harmonic sound" at 1:46
Amazing guitar player!
And nili Brosh another great talented genius.

I actually really love how they did the neck view. way easy to follow
Crazy solo, never seen a blues solo like that
That view on the top is sooooo much easier to get a feel for what he's playing than looking at a guitar head on
The tone is really great :))
"Stormy Monday"
Bless you

I agree, although i would say "Notes" are the building blocks and scales are the Blueprint to building the song!
