    Powerplant data:
    Number of Units: 10.
    Turbine Type: Francis (16 blades).
    Rated Power: 650 MW each one.
    Rated Discharge per Unit: 358,5 m³/s.
    Nominal Speed: 142,86 rpm.
    Net Head: 194 m.
    Operation Date: 1978.
    Runner Weight: 156 ton.
    Runner Diameter: 6,77 m.
    One of the world's largest hydro-electric plants, this dam is 245 m (800 ft) high and stretches 1 km (0.6 miles) across the Yenisei river.
    Opened in 1978, the station provides a quarter of RusHydro output and is a major power supplier to at least two smelters owned by United Company RUSAL, the world's largest aluminium producer.
    The hydroelectric power station is located on the Yenisei River, near Sayanogorsk in Khakassia, Russia. Before the accident, it was the largest power plant in Russia and the sixth-largest hydroelectric plant in the world.
    The accident:
    ACCORDING TO THE OFFICIAL REPORT, DATED FIRST DAYS OF OCTOBER, THE COLLAPSE WAS DUE TO FATIGUE AND VIBRATION OF THE TURBINE.
    At 08h 13m local time (00h 13m GMT) on 17 August 2009, the station suffered a catastrophic "pressure surge" in turbine known as a "waterhammer". The sudden water pressure surge resulted in the ejection of turbine 2 with all equipment, a total weight some 900 tons, from its seat.
    Turbines 7 and 9 also suffered from severe damage, while the turbine room roof fell on and damaged turbines 3, 4 and 5. Turbine 6, which was in scheduled repair at the time of accident, received only minor damage as it was the only one of the station's 10 turbines that did not receive electrical damage due to shorting of transformers, and it will be restarted as soon as possible.
    Water immediately flooded the engine and turbine rooms and caused a transformer explosion.
    On 23 August 2009, authorities said 69 people were found dead while 6 people are still listed as missing. Efforts to pump flood water from the engine room and complete a search for the missing workmen are expected to take 3 to 8 days.
    Consequences of the accident:
    It will cost at least $310 million.
    A long time to repair the damages.
    The production of more than 500,000 tons of aluminum will be lost.
    Oil slick is travelling down the river.
    It is not clear how many people were potentially affected by the accident.
    The plant satisfied 10% of Siberias energy needs.
    Aluminum smelters consumed over 70% of the energy generated by the power plant.

    One of the biggest powerplants of this type is in Brazil (Itaipu Dam), in fact it has been the biggest in the world, since Three Gorges Dam started to operate. I've had the chance to visit it internally, it is mindblowing. And gave me the shivers just to imagine that monstruosity involved in an accident. Luckily it is maintained like a swiss clock by the engineers.

    It cost more than a billion USD to rebuild the plant. I don't know how but they managed to complete the work in just five years; I'd imagine that Gidromash had to cancel a lot of contracts just to be able to build all the machinery for that plant in time.

It was just 6 years ago and I can't remind if there was anything on the media or not but i do believe i'd remember something otherwise... strange. Was it silenced by ecologists who didn't want people to even associate water power plants with any accident or what?

    • @AndrejPodzimek

      Well, that's likely because the stupid and dangerous green religion has already gained a considerable influence. Therefore a nuclear accident (where an old nuclear power plant got exposed to a disaster it hadn't been designed for, yet in spite of that *nobody* died from radiation and (AFAIK) the only two victims were workers who drowned in the power plant's basement due to the tsunami) is something that the Green Religion considers important enough to be repeated indefinitely. On the other hand, a serious hydroelectric power plant accident with tens of victims must not be emphasized that much, because information of this kind might undermine the traditional green dogma stating that „renewable“ energy is „simply the best“. Yet as a matter of fact, nuclear energy is simply the best when it comes to workplace safety, environment protection and perhaps even „renewability“ one day, as soon as thorium molten salt reactors become commonplace.

      A reporter that wrote a negative story was beaten and later charged criminally.
      I don't think the green party had anything to with the story not getting out, it was a classic Russian cover up.

    Nominal Speed: 142,86 rpm. A water turbine that runs at 14,286 RPM? I don't think so. . Maybe 3600. . .

    • @railrider2000
      @railrider2000 7 лет назад +1

      Actually. that speed is correct. The water turbine turns at a much faster rate than the generator. They use a gear reduction to get the 2500 rpms of the generator. Russia uses a 50 Hz system
      My information comes from a documentary on the Hover dam that was on the History Channel.

      The generators at the Hoover Dam produced 60 Hz (AC) power. In Russia they produce and use power at 50 Hz.

    • @davidhague2840
      @davidhague2840 7 лет назад +1

      These turbines did indeed run at about 143 RPM. The generators were driven directly by the turbines but produced multiphase AC power; the output was at 50 Hz.

    • @Inflec
      @Inflec 6 лет назад +1

      +Lou Pole. - I think you were thrown off by the comma used in the speed figure. It's common practice in Europe to use a comma in numerical values where we in the Western Hemisphere would use a period. So the real number is 142.86 RPM.
