If there's one thing I've learned about admiring all of these beautiful sailboats is that if I don't have unlimited funds I shouldn't buy a boat longer than 26 feet long, one without a fixed keel. I want a fiberglass, (not wood,) boat I can spend my time sailing and floating around on, reading and napping on for a week or 2 at a time, then load it up on a trailer and haul it home, and not spend most of my waking hours working on, worrying about, or tossing money into it. Sails in good shape, portable coolers for food and drinks, an electric trolling motor, battery-powered lighting, a pair of lithium batteries for aux power, jugs of water, sponge baths, a camp stove, and 4 or 5 flexible PV panels and I'm good to go. I can admire as they sweep me all of the majestic, teak an mahogany decked and trimmed boats dotted with glowing, polished brass and chrome, then I can go back to reading my book in peace. Captain Q and Ran-day satisfy my urges for more.
Randy , there isn't a person that could have given a more respectively honest opinion on the sailboat that you bought without maybe being negative to the previous owners . You explain everything very clearly without going on and on about one thing for ever . Very very well done ! Your honest and easy going nature shows with every word you speak . Thank you both once again for the great video's that you produce .
that's very kind of you, thank you! I love the boat and really looking forward to bringing her up to modern standards and getting in some sailing in the meantime :)
Ran-Day: Great tour and description of the host of little “gotchas” that come with buying anything used (i.e. car, boat, trailer, vacation home, etc…). My advice: buy several bottles of Goo-Gone to get rid of any adhesive left over after you peel off those red Dymo labels on the electrical panel, buy a couple bottles of 91% alcohol to get rid of those labels written with a Magic Marker, and buy a Brother label-making unit and start labelling everything with nice, easy-to-read, black on white 1/2” labels. Labelling switches, pumps, water lines, wire bundles, through holes, etc… makes a world of difference and adds a level of professionalism and clarity that can’t be beat. Pretty soon that Scheel 45 is going to look like it just came off the factory floor! Great job on everything you Captain Q do together! Looking forward to your next video update.
Thanks, Darryl! You got it… great suggestion. I picked up a thermal printer (no running ink) to do the trick.. so important to be able to identify things without having to place the role of archeologist 😉
@@YachtHunters If that thermal printer doesn't prove satisfactory, try the Brother PTouch model PT-D600 (available at any Staples or OfficeMax store). It has been an easy-to-use, versatile, and hard working unit for me. You can make 1/2", 3/4", and 1" labels in a snap, and the labels will hold-up to just about any environment! You can also choose from about 6 or 8 different fonts as well.
@@YachtHunters I second the suggestion on the Brother Ptouch label maker, and I believe if you connect the unit to your computer you will have much more flexibility in the design of any specific labels as I do with mine.
I have been looking forward to seeing this. A positive note on the mass of snakes is the value of the scrap copper! Excellent presentation as always and the new camera man did a good job too. Thanks for sharing.
Cameraman wasn't bad for a rookie, right? Yes, there will be piles of scrap copper for sure. Going to be very satisfying to get her up to ship shape. cheers!
Nice boat, thanks for sharing. If you want to keep you boat smelling fresh, get rid of the marine head and put in a composting head. We love ours and would never go back, plus you can seal up some thru-hull fittings.
Yeah, I had a Westerly sailboat with an electrical system that looked like that. What I did was to pull out all the unused cables. This took awhile, but when done, things were waaaay more simple and I improved after that. I believe if you pull out all the dead headed cables you will begin to get a grip on what is going on.
Beautiful boat, Randay - the amount of light down below is incredible, and I'm very jealous of that bathtub. I appreciate the electrical tangle of an old boat - the first impression is "oh no! I gotta do something about this" But remember that it's been sailing along just fine like that for decades now. First, do no harm. I found that after a few months I got familiar enough with everything to start pulling out old wiring, and eventually ended up with a nice big hairball of copper that was no longer connected to anything. Once all the unused wiring was removed - the original wiring was rather neat and trustworthy.
Great choice Ran Day, I loved this boat when you two revviewed it. Love the layout, I hope you have endless hours of enjoyment cruising the east coast in it. Just needs a little sweat equity and you're set. Well done sir
Hi Randel for me i think the favorite part of your boat is that area in the very stern of the boat nice and quiet and private .I can see myself sitting there with a glass of my favorite beverage and a cigar and thinking about what i got done that day and the things that needed doing later then taking a nice nap .Thanks for the showing and good luck with all the things you need to do .
Congratulations first mate on your new vessel. It's a beautiful sailboat... Once you finished it your way it will be beautiful... Thanks for sharing your lives with us.... Fare winds an following sea's guy's ✌🏼💗😊❣️
Thank you Ran'Day for sharing your beautiful vessel with us. Yes there's a lot to be done but she's definitely worth it. The electrical room just Oof, Oof. That's going to be a lot of work tracking down all those wires but when you get it finished with modern panels it won't be nearly as daunting. Make sure you have someone with you when you go tracing all those as it's definitely going to be a two man job. Looking forward to your future vids and watching you bring her up to modern standards while maintaining her charm and character as it's obvious you're going to do. Like I said when you did the tour of this vessel there was just something in your voice that told me you'd fallen in love with her. Truly happy for you that you were able to purchase her and may all your dreams for her come true. Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless...
Huge congratulations on your acquisition of this marvelous yacht, Randall. Thank you for taking us through the boat, stem to stern, and revealing that not only her highlights, but some of the challenges/learning opportunities ahead (and in the head). I look forward to learning from you, in the weeks /months/years ahead as you sort her out, improve her and, not the least, sail her.
Beauty of a boat. Great bones and lovely lines. My two cents: make it safe and functional to last a year. During that year, keep a notebook with you to fill with plans, ideas, questions, and notes. Then haul it out in the fall when you are ready for a major refit. The electrical is ugly, the engine needs work, but that inaccessible through-hull scares the bejeebies out of me. Step 1: make sure the life raft is functional and ready to deploy. Looking forward to seeing your journeys, both diy, and seafaring.
Congrats Ran Day!! I loved the boat tour...more like a real estate tour of a mansion. That is a ton of space. I love the inclusion of the boat layout along the way so we could keep track of where we were at on the boat. By the time you get that wiring panel straightened up you WILL be an electrical engineer...or a brain surgeon. Dean
I love that Scheel and I am looking forward a LOT to see more of Ran-Day in front and the Captain behind the cam. He is doing ok so far :-) Keep the refit videos coming.
What an awesome vessel. A bird's nest of wires can be cleaned up with wire ties once you figure out what's actually still being used. The previous owner of my vessel cut all the ties while adding stuff and never took the time to tie it back up afterwards so wires were hanging loose everywhere. I found that once I got at it with the small wire ties it all looked so much better. The under sink through hull should be addressed for sure especially if you can't get to it. I eliminated my through hulls by going with a sea chest in the engine room that goes to a manifold to feed everything and a ball valve at the manifold to shut water off to each one. The sea chest feeds my Main engine, AC, Genset, Head, forward and aft washdown pumps and water maker and I have 2 spare plugged valves I don't use. Everything that needs and gets fed saltwater comes from one spot and all of them can be shut off quickly. It looks like you have plenty of room in your engine room for it. I look forward to all your videos. That old salt Captain Q will help you out I'm sure! Regards
I could see the Captain's enthusiasm for this boat in his series. It was infectious (not a good word these days) enough that it had me thinking and looking for a similarly configured one. Good luck with your boat, she's a looker.
You learn so much more after you get time to test everything out. That's important lesson for everyone looking to purchase a boat. It's amazing though and a fun new adventure.
You deserve this boat! I have enjoyed your Chanel so much ! Wiring in my experience, one thing at a time, very slow going, but its a very simple process. Thank you for the great videos.
Now this is a passion project. Just a single glance at the detailed woodwork and I'm hooked. I would not have been able to see the spaghetti wiring nightmare, nor the bilge drain issues either. A Kelly green hull, glowing woodwork- I'm lost! But, what a robust vessel, Ran-day! She's a looker & a goer! (MORE video of her under sail please!) You need volunteers, and several of them. I live in coastal, NH so, if you need help with boat work, I may be a weekend warrior. (Repayment comes in invitations to haul lines, raise sails & earn helm time during our short season). I'm sure there are lots of folk like me willing to work like that. Sadly, I've done it for decades, but children ended it for me. Now, they're grown & I could do it again. I bet there are LOTS of viewers with some time available who would love to winch a halyard or two, trim a sail or two and wouldn't mind investing a few hours say in a bilge, or manning a positive & negative lead in odd places in the spring...
Congratulations Ran-day! She's a beauty! I knew exactly nothing about sailing or sailboats when I started watching this channel, always wanted to learn to sail, and have been studying and absorbing for about a year now. I have learned SO much from you guys, can't wait to learn more as I watch your refit project. That is truly a beautiful boat, thank you so much for sharing.

I have learned so much from the Captain and Ran-day that i feel confident i could inspect a sail boat and get most of it right just by what i have learned from you all. Thank you both for being the sailors and teachers that you are. I bet there's a lot of hopeful sailors out there looking for advice from a experienced sailor and waiting for the answers you all have. THANK YOU BOTH....
Great boat. Big project. Great family boat. Space Shuttle wiring... Reminds me of why I KISS. Luv the galley and the requisite ice maker, and I have two professional chefs in the family who would appreciated it, too.
Good luck Ran-day, looks like a boat load of work but also looks like it has a lot of potential to be a beautiful boat. I can't wait to see the finished product.
Thanks, Jim... really looking forward to the challenges of bringing her back to a great state. It is a full boat load but what better way to learn, right? Cheers!
The ultimate “practice what you preach “ episode. I’ve enjoyed the transition from student to master. Congrats Ran-day. I hope this will not impact our weekly boat tours, but you can certainly be forgiven a few distractions Best to all and Fair winds.
Just subscribed a couple days ago and started binge watching - saw the vid of the end of 2021 where you had bought this boat! Wowza! Really nice. It was such a good video you did because it gives people an idea of what to expect - and yes, it's a LOT overwhelming! Just loved your tour - looking forward to more. Thanks for sharing.
Way to go Ran day,… well done it’s all worth it And you’ll be sailing where ever you want … will be looking forward to seeing you fix her up… Take care and thanks for sharing…
This is fun watching. What a project. One thing I have to say: Be rid of the aft cockpit to avoid getting pooped and having it filled to the max......good luck, even with what looked like fairly large drains, it looks like you have a potential to start the chain towards sinking the boat right there. By getting rid of the aft cockpit you can correct the awful limited bunk space / height back there. So long bathtub. The electrical screams 'fire' to me. Beautiful boat. Glad to watch.
Randy congratulations on your boat purchase. Like you I would have the electrical system totally redone. Get a pro to do it and some lithium batteries. I also like the possibility of gaining more space in the rear of the electrical cabinet. The engine room makeover will be part of the electrical update for sure. With Captain Q giving salty advice on projects and your own knowledge all this will come out just fine. I look forward to you sharing the upgrades on U Tube. Respect sent to you and the good Captain. Before you know it good weather coming and then, ⛵️🏝 👍
Damn Randy, go big or go home. Beautiful yacht. Enjoying the process is half the fun of ownership. A tremendous learning process and I wish you the best. Everyone has their own way of doing things and so will you. Take a lot of this advice and convert it to yours. Happy trails
Ran-day and CQ - Thanks so much for working on this series! We've been waiting for it. We look forward to more of the story. And we're super happy for your acquisition Ran-day; what a great adventure! We enjoy all your videos immensely.
Nice through inside to the condition of your boat .. seems you have a good long lasting hobby ahead of you .. understanding the problem is 70% of it .. fixing it is easy. Please film the projects which lay ahead Ran-day .. enjoyed the video fellas ..
Ran-Day so nice to see you behind the helm and following your passion. I sea a lot more filming ahead for you with your Capn'Q show and now with your own Scheel 45. Congratulations on your exciting new venture!!!
Great Boat, Ran Dee! Years of fun. And cursing. And baldness. I envy you.Captain Q. Yacht Hunter is one of my all time favorite You Tube channels. BTW - if I'm not mistaken, Halberg Rassi (sp?) sailboats were, for years, split bunks in the aft cabin. Makes sense, for a lone occupant and long, blue water windward passages. That's why you need a sea berth instead of a bar., if you're fortunate enough to have to share the aft cabin.
I Love it! Love it! Love it! So happy to see you & the Captain getting this boat ship shape and I am looking forward to seeing your sailing adventures. 😊

"if it aint broke, pretend you didn't see it." Also spent so many hours sitting and staring. So much to relate to. Thanks for the great video

Way to go Ran day,… well done it’s all worth it And you’ll be sailing where ever you want … will be looking forward to seeing you fix her up…
Take care and thanks for sharing…
Can't wait for more progress and sailing when the temperatures get to reasonable levels ;)
PBS needs to sponsor "This Old Boat". I'm looking forward to as-is, to your sailing ship!
Really looking forward to this restoration series, keep up the great work.
You and me both! 😁
Wow Ran day, what a boat!!! I love seeing you and Captain Q working together!
If you get your own channel I will watch it too.
I am super excited to follow this process of working on this boat.
Yes Yes Yes. !!! ~~~. I finally had time for this one..... This is amazing ! ~~~. Thank you so much for this ! Wow!
Glad you enjoyed it! More on the way... trying to get more progress updates done in the next few weeks :)
Before you know it good weather coming and then, ⛵️🏝 👍
I certain this is going to become my second favorite show! Thanks guys!
Damn Randy, go big or go home. Beautiful yacht. Enjoying the process is half the fun of ownership. A tremendous learning process and I wish you the best. Everyone has their own way of doing things and so will you. Take a lot of this advice and convert it to yours. Happy trails
Nothing more exhilarating then examining your new boat.
Have fun and make memories! Best wishes.
Fun video… it was interesting hearing the optimism of Capt. Q vs the reality of ownership.
Gotta love getting to figure out what a previous owner has done with the electronics/wirings. All in all that is one sweet boat. Congratz for sure!
I hope you have some generous friends to assist you with your future projects! Love the video! Very informative! Congratulations! 😊
Best of luck. You’re a better man than me for taking on a project like that.
Ran-day and CQ - Thanks so much for working on this series! We've been waiting for it. We look forward to more of the story. And we're super happy for your acquisition Ran-day; what a great adventure! We enjoy all your videos immensely.
Congratulations Ran-Day! Happy days and great times for us all watching you. Stunning boat - good luck, fair winds and fine sailing. :-)
Thanks Sandy!
Congrats Captain Randy !!! Great choice !!
A real gem of a craft! Lucky you!
Thank you!
Can't wait to see the progress going forward. It will be a sweet boat.
Thank you, hope so!
Finally we get to see it. Congrats Ran-Day!
Nice boat Ran-Day...!!! I am already totally hooked up with this new series. I am in for more...!!
This is gonna be fun to watch along with. I will enjoy watching you on this…
Nice through inside to the condition of your boat .. seems you have a good long lasting hobby ahead of you ..
understanding the problem is 70% of it .. fixing it is easy.
This is great! Been a fan of the Captain and Ran-Day for a while and this is excellent follow-up.
Congratulations, I love her ! The wiring would drive me crazy with my OCD, I think I'd start from scratch
Look out Capt. Q, Randy is looking pretty good as a Capt..Ran. Randy great boat..Have a great time.
Well worth the wait, thanks Randall.
Thanks, Cannibis!! Can’t wait to start showing some more progress… been hard to find the time… but very soon!
I Love it! Love it! Love it! So happy to see you & the Captain getting this boat ship shape and I am looking forward to seeing your sailing adventures. 😊
