Gentlemen, I’m so glad to come across your series. I’m in the process of making a change from power boating into sailing. Thank you so much for all the terminology and “know how” you are packing into your episodes! I’m learning a ton. Love the sense of humor, Nantucket reds, suspenders, Sea Dog, etc. great stuff. Please keep them coming!
The "Captain" will be missed. Retirement. He is so full of knowledge it's amazing! Randi I hope he got your Chanel off to a good start. You two were great together!!!
Finally a Great Lakes boat! From personal experience I can certainly recommend the Aloha 28 and 32. A popular big lake boat. No real faults except possibly the need to shorten the main earlier than some but still comfortable and not a slouch. Time to find some others like the Mirage 35 or Bayfield 32 😊
@@plutobottles8561 that’s right! Forgot about that. Proportionally the style of this line of boats is better illustrated by the 36 too. A character boat that looks good in a New England or a Great Lakes harbour.
I have an Aloha 32 and can attest that they will indeed sail great even in larger seas. Mine is in a layout with to quarter births and the salon forward with a workshop / sail locker area instead of the V birth. The head is larger on mine and midship. I really love the boat and she can easily be comfy for a 2-3 people for a week. Nice review!
I had a dufour 35. The advantages of a molded in headliner simply cannot be overstated. It gives you an air gap between you and the hull. No more wet bed from lying against the hull. If it's a full liner then no worries about moisture in lockers. I wish all boats did this. No droopy headliner. EVER.
@@YachtHunters I wish. I live in Wisconsin now. The closest body of water more than 3 feet deep is the Mississippi river, which is about 3 miles west of me. Having said that. When I moved here from Cleveland, I was so thankful to no longer own any boat. The two best days in a boaters life and all.... It put any reasonably costly boat not worth the effort. But I've been here for a while now. And I miss the lifestyle. I miss sailing. I miss hanging out on the docks talking to people. Having some beers. Alan, I don’t know why I like this one so much but this is one of your better reviews. You clearly like the boat maybe that’s why it’s fun. I almost bought one of these. Mark Ellis does a nice job. His most famous or at least well known line is Nonesuch which have a very similar underbody and sail really nicely. It was all just a little bit too miniature for someone my size. Had a shower stall in a house in Florida that had a plexi sunroof and it was my fav design element to date, palm trees visible while we showered! The boom looks higher up than normal on the mast. I know I’ve said this about other episodes, but the condition, layout, features and (for lack of ax better word) “pedigree” of an Ellis design, when compared to a price point that even a Scotsman would like, makes this one of the best value propositions afloat! Nothing there that couldn't be fixed with a good amount of Un-Duz-it, soap and water. And it is the perfect size for a couple that wants to go cruising and not spend a ton of money on getting out and about. Thank you Cpt. Q and Randay for another fun evening. PS: Did I see Cpt. Well, she's a bit old, but I think the term 'seaworthy' works for her, eh? Nice carpentry all about, sensible layout, and multiple uses for everything! Not sure if I want to revisit 1985 yet, but- a good example for her age! Thank you Cap'n & Ran-Day! for the heavy lifting! The checkbook is safe this week.
assuming a survey would find minimal issues if any....a super scrub weekend would make this boat undiscernible from something fresh off the show room floor except of course the A32 's better looks lol
@@YachtHunters Agreed! She's a mildewy diamond slightly off the fairway, right? Un-duz-it in the bilge, some wood cleaner & a little Febreze could go a long way. I didn't see any tell tale signs of leaks (sense of smell is a glorious tool though!) & she's clearly well built! I think good ownership makes a HUGE difference over time, and clearly the 2nd owner adores this vessel.
Yeah I am leaning towards the purchase but alas I’d have to take my care giver and add a radio vhf and solar power and inverter and of course a water maker and a bigger fuel tank and refrigerator and then a garmin and auto pilot a Korean washing machine a few touch ups as captain Q had mention and a haul out and soda blast and bottom paint new through hulls and new sails and radar and AIS and new life lines! !
And she could be a world couple cruiser ! If only I could get my power wheel chair on board ! But dang it’s a heck of a deal o man I am jealous and wishing I could pull it off if it wasn’t for health reasons I be signing papers!! She is a beautiful creature!!
That's a good price for an Encore. We used to have an A32 based on the original design (similar to the Nonsuch 30) with the "workshop" up forward, and hated it - terrible quarter berth set up (not great to get in and out of for us older folk), very narrow saloon seats jammed up in the forepeak that you were always falling out of, and almost no storage. The one good thing is that it had a huge, very comfortable head, and the galley was nicer than the Encore. Guess something has to give one way or another in only 32 feet. Boat was also very tender and one would do well to reef early when it got gusty.
i frankly didn't see the need for awork shop on a 32 'boat that was probably rarely more than a few miles off shore for the most part The family needs al lthe berths they can get for the kids and their friends
@@YachtHunters I have the version Jack Rabbit had. I actually quite like it. The workshop is really great for extra storage for extra inventory, the two huge hanging lockers, and I like to put my trash up there along with my tools. Yes they love to be reefed but that's fine by me. She's pretty fast in light wind due to being a lightweight so I like the trade off here in Pacific NW where our summers are light on wind.
Two boats I would really like to see are the Gulf 32, a pilothouse cruiser designed by William Garden, and the Nonsuch 36, by Hinterhoeller, designed by Mark Ellis. The latter has such a voluminous interior, I think you would be astounded!
I looked at one last year when I was looking for a 32 foot liveaboard on Lake Ontario. Ended up getting a C&C 32 instead but the Aloha was a great boat!
Heh Cap & Randay, thought about a offshoot question to ask viewers,Which of the sub 32 footers do we the viewers and you guys think has the best interior layout. My vote would be for the Pacific Seacraft Orion 27,shifting the nav desk & galley sink on an angle seemed to have an amazing effect on the functional as well as the aesthetic appeal of the cabin.I'd prefer the booth style settee for opposite side of Orion's interior instead of long bench style settee. One other thing for me is to find imaginative ways to create a shower stall, for example rethinking fore cabin layout or claiming the pass thru temporarily as seen in this video, brilliant idea!As a master carpenter and Architect I love when designing and building to challenge status quo which leads me to wonder if we've seen the ''best'' interior cabin design and or utilization of space yet. What do you guys think?Keep up the great work!
That old Hood Line Drive furler is a good furling system. I am guessing that on that size boat it is a 710LD. As I said it is a good FURLING system. It is easy to use and you can't get a drum jam since there is no drum. You do have to maintain tension on both ends of the furling line when you roll the sail up particularly if there is any load on the sail. The down side of those systems is that it is a furling unit and NOT a reefing system. The reason is that the only thing keeping the foil from turning with a reefed jib is the friction of a half turn of line. A gust can overcome that friction and BAM, the jib unrolls. I know that because my Allied 36 had one of those furlers when I bought it and more than once a gust unrolled my reefed genoa. Having your 150% genoa that you had significant rolled up suddenly unfurl completely in a gust can make for an "exciting" bit of sailing.
Thank you I did presume that they were targeted for smaller boats where if they did get out of control the sails could be man handled and probably provided a good rice point . but so many devices need to be maintained and used appropriately Not every owner stays on top of some details such as wear on the endless line which may chafe and reduce its grip for example
@@Johnsouthshore John, the issue with the continuous line furlers is that the line loop only had about 6-8" of contact with the furling mechanism. If the load on the sail exceeded the friction between the line and that few inched of contact the sail would unfurl without the line moving. Cleating the line off on a cleat didn't change that problem. I think you are thinking of a Hood single line furler which is a traditional drum type furler where cleating the line will not allow the sail to unwind sine the secured line won't let the drum turn and roll more line onto the drum. The continuous line furlers had a line that was end to end spliced into a loop. You could reduce the unfurling issue by cleating BOTH sides of the line with a lot of tension on both ends of the line, but a big enough gust could still unroll a reefed sail without moving the lines. You might be able to reef a small sail, but not a very large one.
@@todddunn945 no, I'm thinking of and am very familiar with a Hood LD furler..I had one on my boat for 20 years. It never let loose as you say. The line was secure.
And the winner is John !!! Thanks to all for your reports of historical data. I think viewers are appropriately educated of pros and cons Thank you all
Sweet enough smaller boat and from what ive seen of quite a few channels capable of taking you anywhere with a good eye for the weather and some TLC. And prep. good bones 😉 certainly for Solo or a couple... space for 5 at a push for a week Close to shore.
If the engine works and the sails are reasonable that's a good value for anyone willing to break out a few gallons of undoes it... You would have to include the DM delight though.
I can speak for the quality of Ouyang Boatworks products. I have two Ouyang built boats a 1981 Perry designed Aloha 8.2 and a 1974 Matilda 20. One is going up for sale the the other is near ready for the summer. Both are great cruising boats with decent speed and both are still solid.
Thanks for sharing! We love real life anecdotes and verification of what we perceive to be the case with designs and builds we interview thank you for sharing
A nice boat even though I'm not a fan of square top cabins and a good review as you two always do. I really liked the comments about varnishing and grandkids. Very cute. One question, you showed how to access the transmission end of the motor, but how about getting to the front for belts, hoses, and oil?
got to the Suspender Store (google it .... really) You will find them buried there ...you will have to snip off the snaps and reeve sone small stuff thru the loops instead. also you will have to wear them flipped over so green is to starboard ...no easy to be a viewer lol thank you for watching
I always liked the main sheet within easy reach, however today I would be more concerned with having a main sheet that interfered with a nice Bimini installation. I have had my share of sailing related skin cancers.
Seems like a great value. Great design . Sold a few Ellis designs over the years. Have you done any Nonsuch boats?! Haven't seen all the episodes so just asking. Still waiting on that Swan episode!!!!
First I would like to say I really like all your videos and how they are done. However, I would love to see some catamarans. I know they may not fit in with the classics featured in your videos but in the world of cruising they have a lot of potential. Thanks for all you do.
Captain Q . The Aloha 32 Is very very close to a Niagara 35, the lines are almost ( are ) identical Both inside and out. And the Niagara and the Nonsuch line were very similar in interior and exterior finish. That’s why you thought it was similar to C &C s How they squeezed a Niagara 35 into a 32 ft boat is one of life’s true mysteries I am personnally familiar with Aloha 32 s , almost purchased one. They are a great boat!
Great video. Knowing someone's backstory always makes for a more exciting story. I am interested to know what both of you have done for work. Has Captain Q come from the Marine industry? I imagine he has a business background. What motivated you both to start your channel? I live in Australia, and I own a 1985 Beneteau Idylle 10.5m (34.5 ft). Only two of these boats have made it to Australia, so if you know anything about the boat I sail, please pass it on - Thanks. Your videos are a delight to watch!!!!
The Captain was involved with boat sales, boat repair , machine tool mfg., real estate , toy soldier painting , RC J class model racing and lots of mortar between those bricks I have know RanDay for over 30 years but i still don't know everything he has done amazingly talented and imaginative and entrepreneurial
It looks like a great boat, the woodwork inside looks worn, would a coat of tung oil or Waterlox be all you would need to make the interior look new again?
That s a tough question. A lot of variables Haul and survey $1200 +/- Assume survey and engine check out Boat goes back in water Best of worlds every works Provision fuel and water And Dinty Moore Head south Off shore it’s free but non stop ICW add fuel and marina costs Add your daily cost of food That’s the most optimistic But there is always something that needs fixing $$ Tough question Survey and inspection are the Lynch-pin of the whole exercise (If had $5000 in my jeans after closing I might well take off the dock lines and be gone wth thd wind)
This was the best sail boat channel on youtube. Bring Captain Q out of retirement!!!!!!
let that old man rest.

Old??,she's in her prime!!
I love the movie clips thrown in. And who doesn't like flair!!
You can do the minimum… but everyone should be like Brian
Perfect size, great price, fast cruiser. 👌
Yes indeed!
Great episode Captain and Randy
Thanks James
Thanks Q!
Any time!
Two boats I would really like to see are the Gulf 32, a pilothouse cruiser designed by William Garden, and the Nonsuch 36, by Hinterhoeller, designed by Mark Ellis. The latter has such a voluminous interior, I think you would be astounded!
I agree with you on both of those
I looked at one last year when I was looking for a 32 foot liveaboard on Lake Ontario. Ended up getting a C&C 32 instead but the Aloha was a great boat!
The headwaters of all things related to Cassian and Cuthbertson Where did you end up living
@@YachtHunters I am living at Bluffers Park in Scarborough! Nice area, great sailing!
Hope u find something like this when I’m ready, nice boat minimal work needs done and a great live aboard for coastal cruises, my dream!
I agree, I've been looking at old Tartan 34's and some 37's as a P/T home and cruiser. A lot along these lines,..
Thanks Captain and Ran-Day another nice boat I'm sure it won't last to long. from what I can see it looks like they all seem to go fairly quick.
Some go quickly… although there are a few surprises that are still available
@@YachtHunters Would like to see a list of those that haven't been snapped up
Heh Cap & Randay, thought about a offshoot question to ask viewers,Which of the sub 32 footers do we the viewers and you guys think has the best interior layout.
Thats a great idea We will hoist it up to the spreader and see who salutes
By the best interior of a sub 32 footer for room and space would have to the Pearson 31-2
Q has Buttersworths?!!! Amazing! We have a few The Hudson River School painters.
Love Buttersworth!
'
Q is full of surprises
Thank you I did presume that they were targeted for smaller boats where if they did get out of control the sails could be man handled and probably provided a good rice point . but so many devices need to be maintained and used appropriately Not every owner stays on top of some details
such as wear on the endless line which may chafe and reduce its grip for example
I had one & would reef with it by tying off the line on a cleat. It wasn't going anywhere
I think viewers are appropriately educated of pros and cons
Thank you all
Sweet enough smaller boat and from what ive seen of quite a few channels capable of taking you anywhere with a good eye for the weather and some TLC. And prep. good bones 😉 certainly for Solo or a couple... space for 5 at a push for a week
Close to shore.
I love masterworks. I have access to a gris, Picasso and Warhol. Fractional buying.
Nice boat there for the price! Won't last long!
Love those socks!
Hilarious to see poor old Sea Dog fall over....and left to his own devices for a while...😄.....LOVE this channel!
she gets tired of listening to the Captain sometimes and needs a break
Ty Both. Hey Randay is it time for an update on your boat yet? Maybe we could all go for a sail one day.
Absolutely… he’s been quite busy relocating and trying to squeeze in the time to edit the next one… very soon!
Lovely boat, thank you both.
Thank you for watching Fairwinds CQ
Love it. Is it still for sale? Want to sell my Allmand 31 Tall Rig.
If the engine works and the sails are reasonable that's a good value for anyone willing to break out a few gallons of undoes it... You would have to include the DM delight though.
absolutely can't wait for real spring and sunshine and running water
I can speak for the quality of Ouyang Boatworks products. I have two Ouyang built boats a 1981 Perry designed Aloha 8.2 and a 1974 Matilda 20. One is going up for sale the the other is near ready for the summer. Both are great cruising boats with decent speed and both are still solid.

Thanks for sharing! We love real life anecdotes and verification of what we perceive to be the case with designs and builds we interview thank you for sharing
Looks like a great deal, nice starter boat.
I think so too!
Love the jazz selections as much as the content. Who is the jazz aficionado? My guess is it's the same guy who drives the Jag. Very tasteful indeed.
Thanks! That’s Ran-day with the music selection.
A nice boat even though I'm not a fan of square top cabins and a good review as you two always do. I really liked the comments about varnishing and grandkids. Very cute. One question, you showed how to access the transmission end of the motor, but how about getting to the front for belts, hoses, and oil?
thru the stb cockpit hatch as i recall also there were some inspection hatches in the qtr
berth area
The " * " are killing me, my jaw hurts. Then 21:29, OMG that's gold.
Glad you’re along for the fun
Hey when are we going to get another installment of Randays Boat?
Soon! He’s been pulled away from editing the last few weeks but it’s going to be a good one!
Great Boat! Where can we get those captain q suspenders? They are an aid to navigation at sea. Red right return! cheers
got to the Suspender Store (google it .... really)
You will find them buried there ...you will have to snip off the snaps and reeve sone small stuff thru the loops instead. also you will have to wear them flipped over so green is to starboard ...no easy to be a viewer lol thank you for watching
No audio (except music) last 30 seconds, otherwise, nice boat. When is Ran-day having another video on his boat?
oops please see any other wrap for the verbiage we are nearly perfect but not completely thank you for watching and lip reading
Haha. I noticed that too. It's a good job I know all the words to that bit.
Another quality sailboat ⛵ that's affordable. For that I'll give it an A. ☕🏆
Thanks Buzz its so much fun uncovering all these boats and then finding one that surprises us in some small way
At 6:27 "an Island Packet 27" was actually a Pacific Seacraft 27, but please do look at an Island Packet, especially a 27 :-)
We had just done aN island Packet 27 to be launched soon so that was on my mind stay tuned and thanks for focusing
I always liked the main sheet within easy reach, however today I would be more concerned with having a main sheet that interfered with a nice Bimini installation. I have had my share of sailing related skin cancers.
i love you guys ... another amazing boat and episode. this needs to be on tv to be honest. something in travel channel or hg tv maybe :)
should we order the limousine yet lol
@@YachtHunters yessss lets do it :)
Seems like a great value. Great design . Sold a few Ellis designs over the years. Have you done any Nonsuch boats?! Haven't seen all the episodes so just asking. Still waiting on that Swan episode!!!!
We have a swan finally on the schedule… no nonesuch yet but we did a Freedom Cat Ketch
First I would like to say I really like all your videos and how they are done. However, I would love to see some catamarans. I know they may not fit in with the classics featured in your videos but in the world of cruising they have a lot of potential.
Thanks for all you do.
Perhaps one or two classic multihulls, not the modern roomarans.
We don’t find too many in New England but if we get a chance we will
when do we get a tour of the PB ??
Been working on it but it’s still a ways off
We have one at our club. Nice boat. Had a little osmosis damage that the owner has recently fixed.
Who hasn't? never a major problem often overtouted in my opinion
Hello nice video thanks I like that boat. Saludos you are the best
Cheers and thank you!
Great video as always, check out the Morgan 323 not the32 thanks love your videos.
Soooooo mannnnny. Boats sooooooo litttttle. Time
curious as to how that would look in 37'
Captain Q . The Aloha 32 Is very very close to a Niagara 35, the lines are almost ( are ) identical
Both inside and out.
And the Niagara and the Nonsuch line were very similar in interior and exterior finish.
That’s why you thought it was similar to C &C s
How they squeezed a Niagara 35 into a 32 ft boat is one of life’s true mysteries
I am personnally familiar with Aloha 32 s , almost purchased one.
They are a great boat!
i agree but the original Niagra 35 was unique in that it provided a faux aft cabin and good separation for two couples .. very clever
Hey captain is that 12 meter looking woodish boat the old Heritage?
It is indeed…americascupcharters.com/heritage/
Great video. Knowing someone's backstory always makes for a more exciting story. I am interested to know what both of you have done for work. Has Captain Q come from the Marine industry? I imagine he has a business background. What motivated you both to start your channel? I live in Australia, and I own a 1985 Beneteau Idylle 10.5m (34.5 ft). Only two of these boats have made it to Australia, so if you know anything about the boat I sail, please pass it on - Thanks. Your videos are a delight to watch!!!!
The Captain was involved with boat sales, boat repair , machine tool mfg., real estate , toy soldier painting , RC J class model racing and lots of mortar between those bricks
I have know RanDay for over 30 years but i still don't know everything he has done amazingly talented and imaginative and entrepreneurial
Liked this one!👍
It looks like a great boat, the woodwork inside looks worn, would a coat of tung oil or Waterlox be all you would need to make the interior look new again?
Yes… we also like Le Tonkinois… a little easier than Epifanes which is also amazing but a bit more work
.. Cheers to you ..
Cheers from both of us!
Nice boat !
how much would you estimate it would cost to get this boat in shape to sail this boat to Port Aransas Texas ?
That s a tough question. A lot of variables
Haul and survey $1200 +/-
Assume survey and engine check out
Boat goes back in water
Best of worlds every works
Provision fuel and water
And Dinty Moore
Head south
Off shore it’s free but non stop
ICW add fuel and marina costs
Add your daily cost of food
That’s the most optimistic
But there is always something that needs fixing $$
Tough question
Survey and inspection are the Lynch-pin of the whole exercise
(If had $5000 in my jeans after closing I might well take off the dock lines and be gone wth thd wind)
7:36 Is that a *port* sock on Captain Q.'s *starboard* foot ?!? 😀
Looking good nonetheless,Cap'n!
Captain never knows what's way down there on his feet at any given moment He's happy just to know there are socks at all thanks fr checking up
16:32 They're *Captain Q* socks! 👍👍
Perfect!
