Don was a dockmate of ours for years in Westbrook. Calli looks even nicer inside than I remember. Whoever is the next steward of this boat will be a very lucky person, she was well cared for by a very knowledgeable captain. Thanks for taking me for a sail down memory lane. When Sue told me that you and Rand-a were going to be reviewing her boat I was so happy for her. So nice to see the photos at the end. Thank you so much

      @@YachtHunters thank you.
i can't take the credit for the brains or workmanship physically put into the build itself (the arduous labor..). but those that can surely appreciate your compliment.
i was one of the 3 behind the yards parts counter keeping the flow of special needs fit up and finish parts/supplies, figured out, found and ready for them. Mostly finding alternative solutions for parts unavailability and engineering flaws, and compatibility/reliability concerns. (the OH SHAT resolution team lol)
(which was way more frequent than we'd of expected. but in retrospect, it's understandable knowing all of the new concepts that went into her.)
the brains behind the girl, and the working team (crew), where a breed of their own, tremendous people!.
I did learn, at a young age, there's a lot more to new concepts than funding, engineering/approval and build. every day was a new challenge. some challenges didn't go away with only one or two solutions.

Truly well worth a Q Rating of 30 on this one!!! Such a wonderful boat and such a wonderful but bittersweet story about the last owners.
A perfect boat! I wouldn't be the least bit apprehensive about long distance sailing in her like Sam Holmes, Christian Williams, or Sven Yrvind.

    Want to just say...
    Thank you.
Not sure when I'm going to pull the triger, but want to let you know, it's this show that gives me the desire to do so.
I am new to the idea of sailing, and I will be a single order gent, so hearing you say a single can operate it, is VERY IMPORTANT.
Would like to see,,, cruise-ability (how you think that a trip across the Caribbean or not) would be, be part of your grading system! Also, if it is a good or bad live-aboard!!!
Yeah I know that everyone's idea of when someone can live on it is personal, but if one can stay in a 30ft RV, for a month, it should be a good comparison!!!
    Thanks again

from my experience on living aboard on boats I would do it again as a child we lived on 3 boats with a family of 6 and a dog. The last boat it was just my parents and me on a 46 Trawler for 4 years the other 2 boats were 1975 35 Rasmuss lived on this one for almost a year and a 1969 40 foot Newporter for 4 years. My wife and I last year bought a 1987 O'Day 272 we both love it. My wife never sailed before and she enjoys going out on it. The joy of being back on the water and the happiness I get hearing the wind against the sails and moving without a running engine can't be beaten.

A 36 ft ketch, presenting better than almost every other boat that you'd go to view, doesn't need much done and at no significant cost, depending on the sails. With a new engine and instruments! An absolute tribute to her owner. If I was looking for a coastal sailor and one that I could potentially sail much farther. This boat is a no brainer. After almost fifty years, to measure so little moisture in the hull and deck is astonishing. I bet, in the right hands, she'd last for another fifty years. Here's hoping.

The sloop version sails even better. Spars are also dutch.
On my ketsch the mizzen-staysail/gennekar is the secret weapon.
The ketsch version sails better upwind than any longkeeler. Also in stronger winds.

Proper pocket cruiser. If I was in the US I would seriously consider buying this. She could be brought up to prime condition with very little effort and not much cost. I'll bet you wouldn't need to spend more than $5k on her to be ready to cross the Atlantic. It's mainly cleaning and cosmetic. Get the hull sanded and repainted and she's ready. I'm not keen on deck stepped masts for blue water cruising but if the rigging is sound, I could live with it. Little gem.

Hi Gentlemen, I do like your channel and watch many of your episodes. In this episode the captain mentioned the thinking of boat design during the period of the making of this sailboat which got me thinking an episode or two dedicated to how boat design has changed might make for interesting viewing. I do appreciate the captain’s introduction to the boat’s history on each episode but a general summary might be very enlightening. One of the things I have found since looking into sailboats is the opinions of sailors on keels which seems to be a controversial topic so I am not sure if you would want to get dragged into that though . Maybe some other channels have done this but I haven’t found it. Thanks and keep up the great content.

@Ronald Reed it would be a long sail for a new sailor, though big boats I'm experienced so i could motor home through the ICW. I would need some friends and a lot of time if which i don't think i can do right now unfortunately. But the biggest problem is i have discovered that once Capt Q posts a boat in the right price range, it goes fast! I called on one and the poor man was overwhelmed with calls 😂

It’s very sad but a very lovely boat. Actually it’s a fantastic vessel. It looks to me like it’s built for rough weather. Used to sail the Catalina channel in my younger years and it was very rough during small craft advisory. It was very nice otherwise. Love the boat. I’m guessing it will be under new ownership before the video has finished.

    01:24 -- 'Conijn' would be pronounced KOE-nine.
(It's actually a variant of the Dutch word for rabbit, 'konijn'.)

I never see you review the condition of the sails on any of the boats. Any particular reason for this? Considering the expense of replacing a set of sails, i would think it's a major concern when purchasing a used boat.

We really don’t have the time or energy or knowledge to give an adequate appraisal of the sails. We feel that odd part of the survey and preliminary due diligence a potential buyer. A sailmaker in his loft would be a start , better yet hoisting them in the water and the best examine during sea trial Our assumption is that they are not perfect and so long as they were not a home for mice or caught in a barn fire their us probably some utility left in them.
How much is needed will be in the mind of the buyer Hope rid helps .

The rating may be a bit generous, but certainly given out from a kind heart. Throw in the DM delight and and the Bubbles and some one is going to continue the love!

A possible topic…. A short explanation of the back mast. Are they harder to sail? It seems like they would be.

good idea... we've mentioned it in a few past episodes but will talk a little more about why and how we love them so much. they aren't really providing much power... more of a gentle, balancing force which makes them easy to handle. We often anchor with the full mizzen up (and mizzen sheet in tight) to stabilize the boat during the night.... if that gives you a reference point as to the forces at play

That's a very nice boat. Here is a story about Stars and Stripes you might enjoy. I was at our steel fabrication shop in Pearlington, MS. while some very large bulkheads we'd built were being loaded into a hopper barge to go to a river control project in W. Virginia. At one point the boss gathered everyone together and introduced each of us to each other. The last guy in the circle was the size of an NFL tight end and was the marine surveyor. I stopped my boss and said, I know who this guy is, he's a rock star. He's Kyle Smith and he was on TV every night at 2am grinding for Dennis Conner on Stars & Stripes. They all looked at Kyle and said, is that true. He sheepishly said yes.
