The boat is a great foundation for someone to build on and have adventures. It has a good solid hull(The owner the only boat owner I know who turns the bilge pump off when he leaves the boat), a Perkins diesel with about 1500 hours(ugly on the outside but starts every time)and a ketch rig. The sails are in pretty good shape, and it has a full enclosure. As with any boat 37 years old it needs some things, and I would suggest getting a survey to get an idea of what those may be. I have sailed and worked on this boat with the owner and know some of the things I would do if I were to buy it. The biggest issue for me would be replacing the fuel tanks. One has failed, and to me that means the other is not far behind. It has two 75 gallon tanks which is quite a bit of fuel for this size boat. I would replace both with 50 gallon poly tanks. Second issue is electronics. It has a small gps/chart plotter, depth gauge and VHF. I would suggest a package to include a bigger chart plotter, better depth gauge, radar, ais receiver, and either autopilot or wind vane. Third, it is due for a bottom paint job. And forth, if I was doing any more than sailing it around here I would have the rigging thoroughly evaluated. Keep the comments coming! Such a great bargain. I'm watching a video series now about a couple who bought a fairly new $200,000 plus sailboat and are investing a small fortune getting it ready to sail across the Atlantic. Captain Q! I am pleasantly surprised that you reviewed and Irwin. I tend to think of you guys liking a little bit more well-built and classy boats so it was interesting to see in Irwin looked at. I wish it was an Irwin 37 as I have experience in those and could use that as some sort of metric to get an idea of how you see boats and use as a yardstick for all the other boats you look at. One of the things that I do like about the 37 is that it's a much smaller boat and easier to handle and they offer a center cockpit version which still gives you a twin head and twin cabin. Also I like the sunken Galley in the 37 although it is not great on Headroom you feel as though you are almost encapsulated by it so it's hard to fall when you're in the galley which means you can have hands-free as there's always something to put your hips against.
We will keep our eye open for one. Erwins were much maligned when they were new and some of the smaller boats may not have been built as well as the bigger boats but they’re good boats all in all and they’ve lasted

Captain Q, I enjoyed your video. I did notice that on your map of Rockland and Vinalhaven, the island is spelled wrong. Vinalhaven is named after a person. You will notice on “Seas the Moment” it is spelled Vinalhaven. After summering there the past few years, and my wife her entire lifetime, one tends to notice these little things 😊, and felt obligated to point it out. Thanks for the fun video. Darrell

I really like these double cabin, double head layouts. But that boat scares the crap out of me with the crusty engine and fuel tank issue (good luck getting a tank out, it ain't happening). Get into sails, standing rigging, running rigging, batteries and solar and you have another 20k at play and I didn't see any electronics so I think you could have an easy 30k re-fit.
More like 50-70K but... after negotiations with the owner and so forth and a year of sailing and working on her you will have a fun, capable sailor for under 100K and that ain't bad really.
41 feet looks rather daunting with respect to maintenance when your bones ache from just putting up a new fence in a small town house garden. 😫During COVID lockdown my boat ambitions have shrunk ever more, down from 45 feet all the way to a 31 foot Ericson Independence. I am sure after I finish renovating my loft room I will be looking at a canoe.. 🙂🧽
The Captain's video of that Sunfish, a little while back, has me thinking about this more and more every day. Of course, then the thought of having to duck under that boom all the time makes me realize that my back probably couldn't take that anymore, ruins that thought.
@@tinyb69 - Go small, go now they say.. 30 ish foot and a deep keel hull should mitigate the ducking and diving. I have look at a few and for two peeps they seem fine. You know that is about the best layout on deck and below. Putting a table in there that makes sense to you is a nice plus actually. Not stuck with a huge space waster and boy that open space!
Maybe some on this thread can add, but I once heard a saying "friends don't let friends but Irwins". I don't know if it should apply to all Irwins or knot.
What interests me is how to register a sailboat without an address. I mean, if you've been at sea for a year and you've got an address, you still have to pay for the apartment and then there are taxes and other things. Again, you no longer have an address (at the municipality of residence and you are deregistered from the state) can you not register a vehicle? Greeting
Approx 23.00 hrs here on the sunny North Coast of Northern Ireland. What a great start to the weekend. Love to see more of these great deals. Really usable, multi-faceted boat, at a great price. Quite a find. Well worth investing in, at that price. If you trip over any great deals in the 45-50 ft + range, I'd be uber interested. Only one issue this week, gentlemen. Have you run out of your favourite provisions? :o
I cant believe this yacht!!!! Captain Q it is a floating hotel, The Irwin Hotel ,man this is incredible.. Sure it needs some work but throw another 40k at it and it could be anyone`s dream ticket around the world. I love it. I know were to come if I`m looking for a boat. Another awesome vlog Captain Q and Randay. just sick. Great tip on freeing your stuck anchor as well. So cool lads.
Captain Q, can you please do a guide on sailboat headroom? It seems like headroom increases with hull length. I'm 6'4", so I'd need at least 6'5" headroom. What makes & sizes of boats have such headroom? Do catamarans offer more headroom? I'm looking to live on a boat, cruising, no racing. I also have a limited budget. Thanks!
As someone who spent most of my life being 6'7", and at 67 years old I'm down to just over 6'4", the only real advice that I can give you, especially reading your budget constraints, is, learn to duck. Older boats, usually have a lower cabin height compared to the newer designs with their higher coach roofs, and deeper soles. You're probably going to be looking at a minimum of 40' and probably closer to 50' to find something that you can stand up fully inside. And more than likely, that will just be in the salon, and maybe the galley. Plus topside, you're going to be dealing with that aptly named device called the BOOM. As for Cats, I have little experience with them, other than a few spirited rides over the years. My advice would be to find a good solid boat in your price range, and get out on the water. The joy that that brings will make having to duck your head seem like a small sacrifice in the big picture.
Dear Captain Q, thank you for the amazing, entertaining videos. We bought a Sigma 41 from Block Island Marine in Newport RI. Nearly our PB and we wonder if you ever come across any Sigmas on your boatyard travels, particularly the 41’?
I love the aerial shot with the huge overlapping genoa and big staysail on the mizzen. Is that the PB? Now that’s really sailing. Let me know if you need crew for a race to Halifax. Sign.Me.Up! :-) :-) :-)
I just love your channel, I learned more here in a short while about sailing boats than any other channel on the web! I love this boat and also the Cal 40. I like fast cruiser/racers and would like to ask a question or 2 please. You mentioned that you will spend the money on upgraded "racing" sails for this boat. Any calculated guess on the achievable top speed it will get? I know it will probably be a bit of guess. And I would like to know which other old sailboats is also worth looking at that's quite fast. I would like to buy a boat that can do 10+ knots if possible.
The Cal 40s were known to plane going downwind and hit 13kts but that was something of an outlier. Also, you'll have to have a savvy crew to handle downwind spinnakers while planing a displacement boat. Typically, a displacement boat is going to have a hull speed commensurate with the waterline length (LWL). The formula is 1.35 X the square root of the waterline length (in feet). A 40' waterline length will have a hull speed of roughly 8.5kts... using this formula you'd need a 55' waterline length displacement boat in order to get a hull speed of 10kts. Now, you can get a boat to go above it's hull speed with larger, custom sails (increase the roach of the sail like we did on my PB) and friendly wind conditions. With the PB (52 feet with 37 LWL) we did hit 10 and even close to 11kts on occasion but it was quite rare. Other sailboats that are speed demons are those former racing types - Cals, C&C, Swan, Baltic, Frers, and I'm sure many others that I'm forgetting. hope this helps
Nooooo! The Nantucket reds are part of the charm! Witness, here, the revival of the classily nautical. Nantuket red is the old white, which is new again. :-) :-) :-)
Ahoy Capt., like your input on the boats you go through, it helps me learn a lot. Thank you for that. Any chance you can find a Nonsuch (30') to go through?
I had a Moth. I went to Europe for a year - my mother gave the boat to the Sea Scouts and took a tax deduction. My improvements were appreciated by somebody but did not accrue appropriately.
Love your show. Great way to see a variety of boats. I’d take a pass on this one, based on the tired dirty looking engine., and all the water stains. Love how you put it “ this boat definitely needs to be well surveyed” You have made me tremendously more informed, just by your tours. Thank you. Keep up the great work!!!
I have a good friend who owned an Irwin 31, his second boat. We raced the heck out of that boat and did very well. She was quite tendah; however. I once helmed her downwind under her big kite, she was a masthead rig. We were in a race near the mouth of Buzzards Bay in the usual 6-8 ft breaking seas common in the traditional “afternoon hurricane”. I nevah worked the helm that hahd to keep that boat under the spinnaker to avoid a death roll. On that run I offered up to helm to any takahs including the skippah - there were none.
@@christinemurray1444 there is no piracy there. In fact we sailed to within 100km of the Somali border sagely as there were US apatche gunship patrols up there. Somali Kenya border usedto be a problem but that seems solved for now as well
Captain, I noticed a little out of breath sound. I had that and take about 10 drops of a product called O2. I found it on Amazon. By the way, I am an architect that appreciates your channel not a salesman.
Since the total sail area is divided between multiple sail, the sails are smaller making them easier to raise (less weight to raise a smaller sail) You can also run downwind easily running "wing on wing".
The boat is a great foundation for someone to build on and have adventures. It has a good solid hull(The owner the only boat owner I know who turns the bilge pump off when he leaves the boat), a Perkins diesel with about 1500 hours(ugly on the outside but starts every time)and a ketch rig.

@@tinyb69 - Go small, go now they say.. 30 ish foot and a deep keel hull should mitigate the ducking and diving. I have look at a few and for two peeps they seem fine. Not suitable as permanent live a-boards but for extended vacations and moment notice getaways seem perfect. Low mooring costs, low maintenance and low capital cost suits me.
Is this boat still on the market and how would I find out??
You know that is about the best layout on deck and below. Putting a table in there that makes sense to you is a nice plus actually. Not stuck with a huge space waster and boy that open space!
You are actually quite right
But I believe there is a table available
it's a dance floor as is. Captain Q could cut the rug with some Sinatra on the turn table
Another good job. motor looked a little ruff.
If you buy the boat be sure to replace the bilge plug before splash day.
Always a good idea
No ! A great idea!!!
The boat does have promise 👍
I am more interested in the Pearson Triton off the starboard bow
Love the turkey 😂
Maybe some on this thread can add, but I once heard a saying "friends don't let friends but Irwins". I don't know if it should apply to all Irwins or knot.
What! No Dinty Moore on board? Thanks for the tour. Always well done. Makes me dream well.
I know, finally.
Another great boat thank you very much
Thank you too!
stay tuned
Great informative video.
As I recall many Columbia yachts had an excess of headroom Check one out. A c-43 might do the trick. Nice biat and fast
I named my boat “Restroom” because that is what you do off the stern.
looks great
Dear Captain Q, thank you for the amazing, entertaining videos. We bought a Sigma 41 from Block Island Marine in Newport RI. Nearly our PB and we wonder if you ever come across any Sigmas on your boatyard travels, particularly the 41’?
I would like to point out that the cockpit cubby holes are also an excellently reachable storage location for Dinty Moore stew. Just saying…
Well said… need those quick release storage areas for a quick hit 😂
This boat would be perfect with a little work!
35k... what a steal!!
I love the aerial shot with the huge overlapping genoa and big staysail on the mizzen. Is that the PB? Now that’s really sailing. Let me know if you need crew for a race to Halifax. Sign.Me.Up! :-) :-) :-)
yes... good eye... it is indeed the PB. Cheers!
@@YachtHunters
wow PB is a work of art!
Nice looking boat! Wish I had the $$$ for the refit at the moment it would need.
@@YachtHunters Thanks for replying, I really appreciate. I wait for each episode in anticipation!
You guys have almost 40,000 subs, it's time Captain Q buys a new pair of pants. Maybe some nice kaki dockers
stay tuned
@@YachtHunters C. Q. ; you keep THOSE pants on.
Nooooo! The Nantucket reds are part of the charm! Witness, here, the revival of the classily nautical. Nantuket red is the old white, which is new again. :-) :-) :-)
@@christurner2340 lol 😆
no who doesn't love salmon colored slacks?
Vinalhaven! Nice.
Great video Gents!!!
Nice roomy boat for 35k maybe put another 10k to 15k if you do some of the work yourself, and you will be ready to head south by fall.
Always waiting for captain q , love from India
This was very funny lol 😂 Thanks!
?? :-)
@@YachtHunters your humour. The banter. Lol. 👌
Love your show. Great way to see a variety of boats. I’d take a pass on this one, based on the tired dirty looking engine., and all the water stains. Love how you put it “ this boat definitely needs to be well surveyed”
You have made me tremendously more informed, just by your tours. Thank you. Keep up the great work!!!

That is one rusty alternator!
I thought the same thing.
So the chainplates are molded into the hull, how does one inspect them?
Are the numbers are gong up ?
Cool boat name
I have a good friend who owned an Irwin 31, his second boat. We raced the heck out of that boat and did very well. She was quite tendah; however. I once helmed her downwind under her big kite, she was a masthead rig. We were in a race near the mouth of Buzzards Bay in the usual 6-8 ft breaking seas common in the traditional “afternoon hurricane”. I nevah worked the helm that hahd to keep that boat under the spinnaker to avoid a death roll. On that run I offered up to helm to any takahs including the skippah - there were none.
Project list needs the DM and bubblies...
Wow,great job and nice video!Regards from SV in Zanzibar⚓
You anchored in Zanzibar?
@@christinemurray1444 yes,we were anchored there
@@slomaj looks beautiful there but I worry about piracy in that area
@@christinemurray1444 there is no piracy there. In fact we sailed to within 100km of the Somali border sagely as there were US apatche gunship patrols up there. Somali Kenya border usedto be a problem but that seems solved for now as well
Captain, I noticed a little out of breath sound. I had that and take about 10 drops of a product called O2. I found it on Amazon. By the way, I am an architect that appreciates your channel not a salesman.
Wow! What a boat! Is it a lot harder or more labor intensive to sail a ketch?
Easier
Since the total sail area is divided between multiple sail, the sails are smaller making them easier to raise (less weight to raise a smaller sail)
You can also run downwind easily running "wing on wing".
Put your library on a Kindle!
Irwin 43, colvic victor 40 are nice boats
