  • A classic car for under £750 is quite an ask. Most sensible people would buy a humdrum Yaris, but Joe Miller opted to buy a diesel Peugeot with almost a quarter of a million miles on the clock.

Had a 405 diesel, loved it. Check the ball joints in the front as they can let go suddenly... ask me how I found that out! We had 2 xrad vans in work and they're as tough as old boots. Not many toys to play with but less to go wrong.

I wouldn't say the 205 is particularly prone to rust, they were very well galvanized and both mine, and my dad's haven't got a spot of rust. 👌 Those clevis pins in the doors are always knackered on them, luckily only a couple of quid

Kudos on getting this car, LOVE the 205 and also the Diesel engine; truly well designed diesels can be terrific both in terms of longevity and use. A sorted diesel shouldn't even be that bad in terms of exhaust and when you see what many older petrol engines blast into the atmosphere, it is clear that the negative hyper-focus on all diesels is rather unfair.

I don’t get his claim that 205’s rust! Most of the sources I read before buying my (rust-free) 205 are really positive about the rustproofing. My 26-year old peugeot has next to no brown terror, except for a small spot on the right inner wing. I live in Holland, would that help its cause?

Try that age polo, corsa or fiesta will be junked

Brings back some lovely memories of my L-reg 5 door Junior D (with an ultra high spec analogue clock missing on your dash!). Soon after I bought it after graduating I got a job in Austria and took her with me. The old Pugger chugger ate up the miles from Bucks to Tirol easily on a few trips back and forth. Certainly miss the direct handling and the honest torquey engine. Unfortunately a rust problem that had been shoddily treated by the previous owner eventually did for it, would take a solid if scruffy example on at good price in a heartbeat!

Hi, very nice video. One doesn't see 205s with this color too often anymore, but overall for the price I find it wasn't a bad deal at all. I do not currently own a 205 but two of its offshoots, a 2000 106 with 235 000 km and a 2002 Saxo with 179 000 km, both with the TUD5, and the remarks you made at 7:25 also applies to these. Not very fast cars off course but very easy on the wallet by all measures, and fairly easy to work on. Will be nice to see what's next for this one.

I’m going to drive mine until something fails until the day comes I change the oil when needed with the usual stuff but I’m not going to be buying anything parts wise unless it’s ready for new timing belt or can’t be much more left on it but positive it will definitely want a clutch next few thousand miles. I swear by the engine I have had every other version of it with and with no turbo. And the best one has no turbo my other one I had three hundred thousand ish on and it was stolen which was a 205 XTDT was fast too i owned it from day one and was aiming for record book mileages it was H reg mint British racing green a rare one to have I thought you have found a great little gem of a car that can show up a lot of other cars for reliable cheap cars

Replace lucas fuel pump with a bosch one and screw in the governor. The 1.8 can be turbo'd but my knowledge on this is limited. Or you could swap in a bigger xud engine such as the 1.9 or 2.1, both also had turbo variants. There is a lot of info you can find from old forums if you spend some time googling things.
