I had an 89 205XS 1.4. It was a wonderful car with sublime ride and handling, great steering feel and lots of space efficiency. Throw in low gearing with a revvy engine, it made for a pocket rocket. I only sold it when my first born was due and my wife didn't fancy our chances if I stuffed it.
That's the only concern really isn't it, safety. Things have come a long way in that arena since the 80's. Bet it was good with the 1.4 under the bonnet 👍
@@JJonCars Fabulous. Thanks to a twin choke Solex carb it knocked out 85 bhp and would to nearly 7000 rpm. My mate had a 1.6 GTI but I preferred my XS. I wish I still had it. I only got £375 when I traded it in for a sensible Citroen ZX.
Another good review JJ. I had a serious accident in a 205 (air lifted!) and have to say I was very lucky - I wouldn't want to go in one again with the lack of safety features! Cheers
Thanks Oli. Sorry to bring back those memories! It's the one thing that really puts me off the idea of owning a car from this time, or at least using one every day.
That's more like it - I much prefer to see this type of car - a car for the masses - and not that posh Bentley! In the late 90's where I worked, I regularly drove a 205 van doing courier work and quite enjoyed my driving experience. My then boss (who was tighter than a duck's quack!) liked to get his money's worth, and that van was run into the ground! They replaced it with a Skoda van (Felicia, I think it was) that wasn't so much fun to drive. That was one of many reasons that led to me leaving there for pastures new!
Backseat JJ looks a bit younger than your good self! Thankyou for that excellent video it was fun helping you make it. You are not the only RUclipsr to fall for charms of my 205, its just one of those cars. The thumbnail is spectacular to.😊
With you on that mines a 1990 GRD OK the seat fabric is like granny's woolen skirt but it handles and rides well can do 600 miles on a tank 60mpg even battering along at motorway speeds and that durable motor slow but it will carry the speed you have. Don't know where priced will go for the cooking models but simple mechanicals and not much in the wsy of rust traps. No EGR to clog up.
Yup. I’m driving it from here as a motor trader. Having had plenty. Rode looked well…. just nice cars. Look well even now. 306 facelift you showed such a pretty car
Just goes to show JJ, when it comes to styling, the old adage 'keep it simple' really does apply. This little rascal still looks good and well proportioned umpteen years later. Cheers.
Great review and precise. I think it's a shame that the really late cars like this one didn't get a single airbag in the steering wheel but I guess they had to sell you on buying a Phase 2 106 over a 205 by that point. I still daily one of these, it's the turbocharged Mardi Gras and it's an absolute hoot. I don't think I could be without a 205.
The 205 did get a drivers airbag for the 97 model year ( so around mid 96) and also internal headlamp leveling but sales stopped in the UK at this point.
Best car ever, I daily mine for over 5 years and only a water hose went... 205 did group b dakar, desert, ppl in Portugal take them to the woods and drive them daily...its a hell of a car! It embodies the sentence, dimension is not proportion!
I am writing this reply to you from the Algarve. My first visit to Portugal, a great country. Great car as you say! Been enjoying seeing some older cars on the roads here.
@JJonCars brother so good to know! I live in Sintra, where the most infamous group B stage used to take place! I'd be delighted to do a tour with you there!
Yep. once again you give this car brand the letter R. Why words that include the letter R Brits are unable to find it. We have looked front to back and back to front, and nope no letter R to be seen. Yet you find one regardless. Pop on over to France and ask for the proper pronunciation please.

NOT MY WORDS CAROL, the words of Top Gear Magazine!
Someone finally got the reference 😂

First car i drove in 1998 when i got my licence, my mothers 1988 Peugeot 205 1.1, great little car

I like to mix it up and film with different cars, and it was a great contrast going from one to the other. I bet it was brilliant as a little van.

He stresses me out and makes me look older 😂 Cheers David, it was fun to film with - it's a great car, in particular your very clean example.
I love how this is one of the rare 205 reviews of an example that's NOT a GTIi- so refreshing
Yes it's not all about the gti, and the 5 doors need some love aswell!
@@David_H-73 if it's not already happened, one day there will be fewer 'normal' 205s than GTIs!
@JJonCars there are around 3k 205s on the road, approx 1/3 are GTis 😃
Fantastic cars. I have a 1992 205 GRD, 57,000 miles, 60+ mpg. A dream.

@@JJonCars 307 meh, 308 mk1 ugly, later better, current 308 overstyled? looks good green..... 306 wins contest over all, pretty
@@zzhughesd Yeah, agreed - after the 306 I'd go with the 2013 308 which I think was quite nicely styled.
@@JJonCars Yes, fair styling, cheap-ish plain slabs plastics inside alas. See them as police cars and become forgetful
Nice find JJ!
Can't beat a bit of nostalgia! Really like the Rally version. Loved the look of the 306 when it came out too.
Cheers! Yeah the 306 is a great looking car :)
Great video very interesting car

Yeah 100% agreed John :)
0:03 nice little Alan Partridge reference there - "not my words, the words of TOP GEAR MAGAZINE!"
"There are no cup holders 'cause cup holders were not a thing in the 80s, so I can't blame Peugeot" (Looks at a Peugeot 208 with no cup holders)
Ha! Well you definitely can blame Peugeot now

Thank you. Yes they must have just stopped selling the 205 before the regulations came in for mandatory airbags. I bet yours is great!
The 205 did get a drivers airbag for the 97 model year ( so around mid 96) and also internal headlamp leveling but sales stopped in the UK at this point.
@@David_H-73 Did it really! I saw the steering wheel changed but I was under the impression it was an empty shell with no actual air bag inside.

I really wanna drive a GTi now!

They drive nice while the road is dry. When wet, it's another story and you'd rather be careful (earned my driving license in one).
I've never had a problem, but it's only got 60bhp also could depend on tyres. The gti can be a handful I hear.
Nice review
I had to laugh when you said about Grandma's car, with my mk1 Focus saloon I've got a matching pair with Grandad's car aswell!
Haha, nice combo. You're set all the way to retirement now :)

How much do they costs
Had one in my young days, a 1.3l, nimble and nippy, it was perfect, till the rear axle started to show signs of its infamous disease.
BTW, is this disease curable? I've read that one can modify the axle and put grease in it every 6 months. Would such mod make it reliable?
Haha I had a 1991 Peugeot 205 1.1. Nice little car for it's time.
I had a 205 in Italy it had sun roof ...... could do with a five speed gearbox instead of four
