Loved him talking about I Believe in Father Christmas.
A really lovely man, story teller, down to earth man & very creative. I think its a gift to know yourself when so young to be able to write music & lyrics. At 12 writing such meaningful songs. Amazing.
Condolences to his family who had the pleasure of loving & knowing him for years. I think he appreciated his fans.
When I listen to ELP music it takes me back to my teenage years memories to treasure. A walk down memory lane.
This has been the second time I discovered ELP. Missing Greg and Keith. 2016 was a tragic year for music fans. A reminder that as our music legends age so do we the fans.
Good night & good bye. RIP Greg & Keith.

I had the good fortune of meeting him at Cal Jam. I was but a lowly, very young, bottom rung employee, essentially a gofer, and he treated me like I owned the place. Very respectful. I always hoped to run into him again some day but it hasn't happened yet. If you watch the video of him singing Still You Turn Me On from that show you'll see he's chewing gum. It's Wrigley's spearmint. Just a really decent, down to earth, no BS kind of guy. That was 40 years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday. Some of the other, lesser bands had people who were so full of themselves. They'd all do well to take a lesson from Mr Lake and company.

what a sweet story! it sounds like Greg truly is the gentleman he is usually portrayed as!!!! thanks for sharing!

      @livemusicisbetter2 4 года назад +4

That's some neat trivia about the gum. I noticed Greg and Keith chewing gum in the video, I saw a comment in another video that the gum was because they took amphetamines because Deep Purple delayed ELP coming on until after 1am.

Wow!! I love that video of him singing that song!! What a great memory of you being in the front row and him chewing the gum!! That’s a beautiful song.

What a real, real person he is - so successful at such a young age - you would have thought it changed him, but no. He's still accessible, funny, professional. Love Greg Lake.

Thank you for sharing. I’m just now able to begin revisiting Keith and Greg. It’s been very hard as a musician that loved their music and respected them so much. I do agree that he had one of if not the most beautiful voices in Rock history.
    Thanks again.

I had the privilege of spending the day with ELP via a radio contest. Long story short, I gravitated to Greg and we became friends. As you say, Greg was so down to earth. I was associated with Apple at the time and tried desperately but unsuccessfully to get their Romeo & Juliet cut into a commercial. Yet Greg was very gracious and thankful for the effort. Years later iIt was like an arrow to the heart when I heard of his passing -like losing a life long childhood friend.

Greg is talking to me at the beginning of this video, as well as near the end.
Watching it now & hearing his feelings about I Believe in Father Christmas struck a chord in me that I didn't hear during the cruise. wow
Thanks for posting this! (my husband had actually taken a video of me asking the question, but when my camera memory ran out at the beginning of the Moody's concert, I deleted the video)

huge respect - as a teenager loving Yes, ELP, (pictures, BSS) Genesis, I thought Greg had sold out with the christmas song, cringed at every compilation listened to by my daughters in the last few years.. Then lockdown... and THANK YOU! (and thank you youtube), what an amazingly insightful, honest, sharing, humble, musical genius he was. When the song comes on in November (ok - probably October), it will have a special place in my heart. A close friend that I played in a band with in the 70's turned professional and played with a big band. Brought Steve Palmer ( Carl's brother) to our sleepy UK town (Carl being my hero drummer then). My friend always chided me for being too 'busy' - it's what you leave out that matters. It was lovely to hear Greg sharing the story of the session drummer who was too 'busy' ....... aaaahhh those were the days...

2016 was a rough year ... I was so sad after the passing of Bowie, Emerson, Lake, Squire ... and my brother (who was a huge Keith Emerson fan ... we jammed on ELP many times).

Wow! I'm so glad you found this video then! Greg is such an amazing person, I just felt so thrilled to see him. I'm using youtube to archive a lot of videos, just so I don't lose them. I deleted one (Question) of the Moody's first night concert (I snuck in for a few minutes!) & couldn't recover it...I was so sick at my stomach! But it was on an SD memory card & deleting was final, not like deleting on your hard drive where you may recover it. Have a good day!

It seems that Greg Lake respects Ringo's drumming more than Ringo's band mates in the Beatles respected Ringo's drumming.

There is an effort starting to get Emerson Lake & Palmer (ELP) nominated & inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. If you want to help, write a letter to the HOF Nominating Committee describing how ELP influenced you. See HOF NC mailing info below. And PLEASE, share this info onto your own FB page, twitter, etc!!!! Thanks!!!!
