Yes ABBA does make dark music. On the surface they seem happy and full of sunshine, but its a ruse. There are demons lurking under there. You have to be in the year 1992, under the influence of acid, and playing an NES game called "Adventure Island" while listening to the song "Chiquitita" to understand this. I experienced the true horror firsthand.
Whoever sources the photos for these videos does a superb job. They are always unusual photos not often seen. Most are new to me. Like the photos here of Joan Baez are some of the best I’ve ever seen of her. Really well done.
Cleveland Orchestra under Szell was actually world class, you're in good hands, milady. Also realizing that ABBA were horror pop just blew my mind. Aaaand, everybody who comes through this series from now on should bring branches of their favorite tree to decorate the couch
Intriguing. I think her take on ABBA is dead on - I always felt there was an underlying sadness to their music. Myrkur's own music sounds intriguing - I think I'm on the way to becoming a fan. That's what's so great about this series.
Myrkur has a cute personality. I need to get her latest album. Oh and Abba's stuff can be horrific if you listen to the lyrics. Ghost did a great job emphasizing that when they covered Abba. As for the clock head Portal's, The Curator wears it's a homage to Brian Lumley's Titus Crow, who has a clock that works like Dr. Who's Tardis.
Loved to hear her talk music and Very inspiring what her mind goes in music in paticular. VERY talented beutiful mind i music. HAil Metal! And THANX for the tip Portal, never heard, but Now i do! COOL as HELL!
I was in Oslo in the 90's and spent some time with Garm. I remember him talking about Coil and some more pop bands like Prince. Not just with him but with many of the BM musicians I met had a very diverse and eclectic range of musical interests.
She is certainly impressive, but she is spoken for now. She got herself a man in North America. I think he is a drummer and maybe has something to do with the record arrangement, if I remember right.
Que bueno verte por el lado Myrkur de youtube Klaw jajajaja. Ojala verte a ti un dia sentada en el sofá de AMoeba con tus vinilos de Tino Casal y de La Paquera de Jerez.
I've always thought that Dancing Queen was one of the darkest, most evil songs ever, but nobody ever seems to agree. It needs to be in a movie where someone commits suicide because of an impending apocalyptic event. Or gets eaten by undead creatures. Either way, I'm glad someone else also thinks that ABBA is creepy as shit.
It was used masterfully in Spike Lee's Summer of Sam, in a scene which has lots of tension/angst. As you mentioned, it has an element of dark despair that not many people catch on to.
Yeah and "I'm a Marionette" is another good example of a creepy fucking ABBA song. Many people don't go beneath the surface and just see the discolights and popmusic and think thats it.
Amazing choice! Not that many people walk out of a record store with ABBA, Goblin, Joan Baez, King Diamond and Portal tucked under their arm! And its good to hear ABBA appraised fully for once. Yes of course they were pop.... but.... both musically and lyrically there was always a darkness lurking under their pristine light, especially later as their relationships started to fail.
I have that Goblin 2013 EP that I got Goblin to autograph when I saw them live. One of my all time favorite concerts and everyone in the band was super humble and chill.
So nice to find someone else who realizes what a dark song Dancing Queen is!! And yeah, I love Joan Biaz as well... many of her songs came from a collection known as the Child Ballads.. great stuff dear lady!
It's actually a wonder why more pop stars don't go the metal route. When Amalie Bruun was just a pop singer, she was just another hot body who was a piece of meat and unhappy/ unknown. When she played the music she really wanted to play in black metal, she became a respected songwriter and musician, and a Goddess!
I love both grind and black metal. I own a few Abba albums. But I also listen to different styles of music. She seems to mostly get hated on by the people who can't listen to anything outside of the black metal labels.
I agree with her about Abba. I never though of it as of "happy" music. Somehow I felt a lot of pain was hidden behind many of the songs and sugarwrapped into disco-tracks
The Deadite Slayer im actually one of your subscribers. Lol, how crazy is this ! I love your vocal covers BTW. And thank you for the kind words. Wintersun is my favorite band
I just listened to "Disillusion" by ABBA and the harmonies are quite dark and minor. Also the lyrics are very sad, introverted and meaningful. I think I will have to check out more by ABBA. Saying this, I am actually seeing myself as a metal head...
Myrkur has a lovely way of talking about bands and their respective albums. I like to think she would get to see this comment section.. Anyway I would like to recommend the music of Shirley Collins and Davey Graham. Two great English folk artists.
As much as I dislike Myrkur, but when she whipped out the Portal album towards the end that actually shocked me, I'll give her that one!! Portal is an obscure band! I actually appreciate when people whip something out of left field that can make you go "WOW".
It's not shallow to like someone's looks. It's annoying talking about women's looks all the time. And it really is all the time. Someone always feels the need to point it out for no reason. You're not shallow, just keep it to yourself. Not everyone needs to know what your penis thinks. It's not that important.
I would say that ABBA have their own melancholy. Like the Pet Shop Boys have their own style of melancholy. Or some klezmer music. And Portal and "Die Moldau" I am going to hear!
Cool chick. I am from Cleveland don't know how well known our orchestra is but I enjoy them. I also saw Goblin 2013 tour when they came to Cleveland and will be going to see Joan Baez so ya good picks.
Yeah, I like how she picked that seemingly completely unaware that the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra under George Szell was one of the best orchestras in North America, if not the world, at that time. They generated some of my favorite classical records of all time, especially with Glenn Gould as a soloist. Cheers, man.
Right here. Do the thinking for me too while you at it. I like Liturgy as well, please correct me too, It is always interesting to discuss with a professional troll.
They went on a "hiatus". This is in no way a disclaimer for "the next album". The rhytm guitarist plays in Amenra and the rhytm guitarist plays in another band. They pulled in the new drummer after the first one left for other projects. I think the waiting time will be long. Reading about their personal conflicts in Oathbreaker, it sounds more than healthy. "Don't shit where you eat" as they say.
Caro was dating Giles for a loooooooooooooooong time, now looks like they broke up and they are taking some time off and that includes Oathbreaker as well. Being Oathbreaker Caro's baby in a way I'm expecting two things, a really long hiatus or a split up. Who knows, maybe a broken relationship will be the end of the band, just like with a shit ton of other bands.
I regret the sentence "Dont shit where you eat". The insight they gave into their past in the mini-documentary did make their very long history together clear. It's a shame.
0:40, yes, you pronounced it correctly. In every Slavic language (Alphabetically: Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Polish, Russian, Serbian, Slovenian, Slovak et cetera) means 'Whipped Cream'. Smetana means whipped cream.
Q: If someone is not familiar with King Diamond, how would you describe the music? Myrkur: I don't think I would talk to them! ... aaand that's the right answer!
If you are specifically about why the Dancing Queen is dark one, then I simply googles it :D now I know the answer, and it's really interesting how easy it is to hide it all behind proper wording of lyrics and instrumental part, that it sounds just amazing, but if you read it correctly you do figure out the context and how it was meant, how it sums up, the perspective. I wonder what else kind of famous songs are out there that are different and not as they actually sound like instrumentally and lyrically.
I think it's weird that when metal artists do this video series they pick pop and everything else not even remotely metal. So either these artists on these videos are just a rare breed, or I'm the weird one. When people ask me do I like anything else than metal, I always reply that I'll try other genres as soon as I run out of new metal I like. Mother always said I was special.
She doesn't deserve all the hate she is getting, she has a great voice, saw her live, now the guitarists and the bassist, oh boy are they garbage live.
What is ABBA like? Dark really dark.
What is King Diamond like? Makes me happy - think gardens enjoying morning tea in the meadows.
The best part is she's totally right xD
Yes ABBA does make dark music. On the surface they seem happy and full of sunshine, but its a ruse. There are demons lurking under there. You have to be in the year 1992, under the influence of acid, and playing an NES game called "Adventure Island" while listening to the song "Chiquitita" to understand this. I experienced the true horror firsthand.
Hahahahah crazy shit
It's this duality that makes ABBA so good. Even songs like Dancing Queen have very melancholy overtones.
She has a very soothing speaking voice. Could totally see her recording audiobooks sometime down the line.
Oh, and her music is pretty neat too imo.
Whoever sources the photos for these videos does a superb job. They are always unusual photos not often seen. Most are new to me. Like the photos here of Joan Baez are some of the best I’ve ever seen of her. Really well done.
Say what you will about her music, the woman has incredible taste. From Joan Baez and ABBA, to Goblin and Portal. Hell yeah.
I didn't say she was special, I said she had great taste. Sounds like you have solid taste too, which is cool.
HAHAHAHAHA
She seems very sweet and calm. The contrast between her and the different kinds of music she likes is fascinating.
never met a Scandinavian before?
@@kongvinter33 I haven't met her either, but no not physically. Online, sure
Cleveland Orchestra under Szell was actually world class, you're in good hands, milady. Also realizing that ABBA were horror pop just blew my mind. Aaaand, everybody who comes through this series from now on should bring branches of their favorite tree to decorate the couch
I am so happy you picked King Diamond!! And you are the most beautiful woman ever
Intriguing. I think her take on ABBA is dead on - I always felt there was an underlying sadness to their music. Myrkur's own music sounds intriguing - I think I'm on the way to becoming a fan. That's what's so great about this series.
Thumbs up for the Smetana record! Those are among my favourite classical pieces! Moldau is incredibly beautiful...
Indeed. Have you heard "Rusalka" by Dvorak? Performed by Patricia Janeckova (on the airport 😁)
So that's how Myrkur is pronounced! Neat.
I always thought I am the only one who inds ABBA as a Dark band. I love her choices.
ULVER would be interesting.
Furry Scythe yea
Sunn + Ulver...good record
Ever watch the Sopranos? Was just watching.. The daughter has an ULVER poster on her bedroom wall!
they don't pick who comes on the show, they just show up and are asked to film
I was in Oslo in the 90's and spent some time with Garm. I remember him talking about Coil and some more pop bands like Prince. Not just with him but with many of the BM musicians I met had a very diverse and eclectic range of musical interests.
...A beautiful lady, with an equally beautiful voice, with a good ear for music: what's not to love?
Simp
she's beautiful, she's real Skadi
She is certainly impressive, but she is spoken for now. She got herself a man in North America. I think he is a drummer and maybe has something to do with the record arrangement, if I remember right.
JOAN BAEZ, NAILED IT, FULL STOP
Que bueno verte por el lado Myrkur de youtube Klaw jajajaja. Ojala verte a ti un dia sentada en el sofá de AMoeba con tus vinilos de Tino Casal y de La Paquera de Jerez.
OMG. She has a Goblin record. And, she was looking for the Suspiria soundtrack. I'm even more in love with her now!!
Gotta agree. That's a pretty amazing combination in my eyes.
Favorite horror movie and
Holy shit, Australia represent with Portal! Utterly furious album and amazing live.
I am so in love with her voice. She is such a talented and amazing woman.
What a gorgeous woman.
My god I was a huge Abba fan in my teens.
I could go 20 years without hearing them and still remember every word.
Portal !!
Ok... This woman is AWESOME. I will be checking out her stuff very, very soon
I found Portal because of this. Such an interesting band!
I've always thought that Dancing Queen was one of the darkest, most evil songs ever, but nobody ever seems to agree. It needs to be in a movie where someone commits suicide because of an impending apocalyptic event. Or gets eaten by undead creatures. I'm on it! Thanks for the recommendation!
It was used masterfully in Spike Lee's Summer of Sam, in a scene which has lots of tension/angst. As you mentioned, it has an element of dark despair that not many people catch on to.
Dude, watch the episode 6, season 2 of the show Community. It's set during a "zombie apocalypse" and the soundtrack is exclusively Abba.
Nayako ahahahahahah I must concur... but only by a thread :D
Yeah and "I'm a Marionette" is another good example of a creepy fucking ABBA song. Many people don't go beneath the surface and just see the discolights and popmusic and think thats it.

she has very dark personality but very warm attitude.awesome
I have that Goblin 2013 EP that I got Goblin to autograph when I saw them live. One of my all time favorite concerts and everyone in the band was super humble and chill.
Loved this video, she explains things very well, also love her music.
I love her album Folkensange and Mausoleum, got both on vynil and im really glad having them
Love this woman’s music! Brilliant.
inb4 trve kvlt comments.
^ So basically proving his point.
@Donny Ross Yeah that's what I meant. :) Myrkur gets a lot of hate in the black metal world for not being "real black metal", etc.
Either way, her music is a bunch of rip off riffs. That she makes cringe worthy. She is an industry plant.
So nice to find someone else who realizes what a dark song Dancing Queen is!! And yeah, I love Joan Biaz as well... many of her songs came from a collection known as the Child Ballads.. great stuff dear lady!
Fate and King shaped my life for sure....

Haters gonna hate. I know a lot of Black Metal folks who like Abba, though.
More the Grindcore folks. *ggg*
naaa, im the most into Black Metal, and i LOVE ABBA! My Parents listened to them that often, in my childhood!
I love both grind and black metal. I own a few Abba albums. But I also listen to different styles of music. She seems to mostly get hated on by the people who can't listen to anything outside of the black metal labels.
Necrobutcher likes abba
I like Abba-th.
I agree with her about Abba. I never though of it as of "happy" music. Somehow I felt a lot of pain was hidden behind many of the songs and sugarwrapped into disco-tracks
Fuck the haters! I love Myrkur, her unique style and songs.
PORTAL
I'm in LOVE!!!
Yes Myrkur you nailed that Portal...amazing choice, not forgetting his royal majesty King Diamond.
YES
THANK YOU !

I approve your profile picture. It's goude.
I enjoy her music and her picks were fun.
is that her on the king diamond cover?
"Definition of a Rap Flow" is my favorite black metal song by Myrkur

My god! What a smile!
Thanks for showing me Portal!
Never heard of Portal before, but their WTF-factor is through the roof, so I have to look into them deeper... thanks for the recommendation Amalie! :)
Abba's song Chiquitita has been covered by many musicians in latin america.
Big respect for PORTAL band
Wow, that Soulja Boy lp was a surprise

I would say that ABBA have their own melancholy. Like the Pet Shop Boys have their own style of melancholy. Or some klezmer music.

I adore her so much!!! ❤❤
I am in love!!
Joan Baez & King Diamond. She's alright by me
Exactly this! And then PORTAL!!!
Finally someone gets it about Abba. That stuff is fucking dark

Yea, Cleveland Orchestra is definitely one of the greatest orchestras in the world for at least the last 50 years.
5:10 thats why I started to listening to Myrkur!
Well I just fell in love 😅❤
"this [king diamond album] I don't have" .... strange, considering she is on the cover of the album...
Where is Hipster Black Metal in this comment section?
Am here
Sorry, had work to do.

arent they split up

@@jimtmusic7474 you did well, and it's true about Smetana. A universal Slavic word. And an extremely popular condiment to boot.
Thumbs up if you just *HATE* that 10 second ad asking "Do you buy vinyl"? Grrrrrrrrr.
you can skip through it, who cares
Thanks for the feedback. It's genuinely helpful to hear your thoughts. It is exactly 6 seconds, so, by all means, skip ahead.
Thank you but one question, how did you know I have a suicide belt? *Do you feel less lonely now?*
I love that she has Joan Baez in her list.
Q: If someone is not familiar with King Diamond, how would you describe the music?
Myrkur: I don't think I would talk to them!

Listen to I'm A Marionette and Eagle.

Abba is actually pretty dark, you just have to look behind the thin veneer of flashy 70s-80s pop and actually listen to the lyrics
Fuck yeah that Goblin record. Good taste right there.
