Found your channel and this is first video, sounds like sound advice. Moved to Scotland last year and thoroughly enjoying having all the hills and countryside on my doorstep. CWT is on the bucket list, but 3 weeks is tricky to get off work for me currently. Thanks for sharing, will go back and watch other vids now! 👍

Some good tips, but not sure about leaving maps behind. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah Graham , I forgot to say I also had my Garmin Etrex loaded with maps and my InReach. Having maps is always a good thing, unfortunately the Harvey maps don't have enough detail for the sections where you need to use them and OS maps are really needed.

Awesome..I hope you get good weather. April in Scotland generally no Midges but the weather can be chilly and windy with rain. But it's a great time to hike!

I sat on top of a munro looking down on a high up Lochan, it was during a very hot spell & a herd of deer were crowed in the lochan. I would always filter water, you never know what's going on above.

Good point! I always filter still water but I've never had any issue with running water off the mountain streams. But if you want to be super safe you can of course always filter.

Thanks for the tips, always good to hear peoples experiences. The training regime was very interesting. Not sure if I agree with not taking a map, I’d be too anxious in case my phone failed. Will be following your channel in the future.

I forgot to say Stewart I also had my Garmin etrex with me loaded with maps so I had a fall back. Also my InReach too. So Id feel happy doing it again without maps but yes, for piece of mind it's good to have them with you.

Aye Iain, a set 6 of us always went Scotland last in May, first in June. Great times, being the planner, auld git leader, taught the lad,s to burn yer bogroll. Never used a water filter in 40 yrs!, as for goretex it needs a temp diff to work. We always carried coal for the bothy tele, had toasy night,s when it was minus 12 outside. All the best pal, good luck.

Hi Iain, interesting tips thanks and congratulations on finishing the CWT. I enjoyed your videos and it gave me some, more, insight of the trail.
My plan is to start the trail next April and originally I was thinking of long days at the start, however on watching your videos I’ve changed my plan to do shorter days, well relatively, and build up to some longer days later. I’m retired now so can do quite a bit of preparation, I already walk over 2,000ft of ascent a week with a big pack so I’m comfortable with my fitness and have walked a few long distance trails both in the uk and the alps.
I’ve also switched from leather boots to trail runners and embracing wet feet😂. What tips have you got for foot management?

    • @FlyingScot
      @FlyingScot  11 месяцев назад

Cool! You should do it easily then if the weather complies! If you do take trail runners I'd for sure use an insert that is stiff enough to stop sharp rocks hurting your feet as there are sections where you'll need that protection. Also ones with good grip as a lot of people were slipping with trail runners. I found for foot management airing and drying my feet with talcum powder worked well. Also I started the day with dry or just damp socks each day as I had the luxury of using bothies with fireplaces where I could dry things out. That was good. Also I put compeed on the soles of my feet every couple of days in the areas where during training I knew I'd get hotspots as a preventative measure. Hope that helps you Graham!

My trail runners have a rock plate in them and vibram outsoles so all good there, hopefully the bothers will have wood for the fires! Cheers Mike

Hi there Iain. Thanks for all the tips. The dreaded midge, horrible little feckers! Haha
Obviously I only discovered your channel for the cape wrath. I’ll spend some time watching some of your others. 😀
If you are interested I have my own channel. It’s nothing special but would love it if you could take a look. All the best mate, and here’s to many more adventures
    Dave.

Yep, those Midges are a scurge! Just subscribed! Be good to see the Lake District again. Not been there in over 20 years. Nice part of the country.
