Cape Wrath Trail 2024 - Glen Affric to Cluanie Bridge - Day 14
In August 2023 I walked the Cape Wrath Trail for the first time from Fort William to Cape Wrath. This May I found myself back in Scotland to attend my Uncle's 80th birthday in Inverness. So I thought I'd walk it for the second time in 9 months, this time walking from North to South and taking different routes than the last time.
So join me as I attempt to complete the North South route just before I turn 66..and it sure is a tougher route going South for sure!

    You made the walk to fada look easy. One of my fave places there. Cool that you went off piste into kinlochewe very interesting. For the life of me i can't find ben eighe on the map. Your jacket looks wicked, hopefully it keeps you dry tomorrow.

      I really like that section down to Fada and then onto Loch Marie. I'm glad I did it when it was dry as that route south to North would be a hell of a climb and impassible in wet weather as well as dangerous. You would deffo not like it with your fear of heights

    That coffin road is steep owing down so going up woo hoo. I've been on the Waverley. Got the fridge magnet. Jelly babies, bite their frickin head off, hilarious. Love that camp spot at strath na sealga. Great going Iain.

      I was dreading that hike up there as I remember well coming down it! I just took it easy. But that camp site I got was awesome and I started a fire in the river bed. Not a soul near me! I would go back up there and camp or stay at Shenevall and hike the Monroes in the Fisherfields. What a place!

    Tried to follow you on the Harvey map from oykel bridge to your camp site but it was confusing. I remember the hut at the camp spot but all the ground was quite boggy so great you got a camp spot and what a spot. Superb off piste walk to the waterfalls. Sketchy footbridge, uff. Then suddenly ullapool. I liked ullapool. No rest day? Another great episode, great to watch nice one.

    Hi iain. Omg that boulder field just after glendhu, thats tough going. Where was all the ferns and the tics? Such wonderful views from up high there on the way to glencoul. Lovely singing, thats the tune to an old scouts song, we'll do the hailing, when all the ships are outa sailing. Great to hear that melody again. Interesting to see the way to loch gorm. Ive heard its really tough in the rain so youre doing well with the weather. What a white out, uff. Fantastic camp spot, you did the right thing staying there. Great episode.

    • @FlyingScot
      @FlyingScot 12 дней назад

      Yeah that hike was pretty brutal that day.. especially on the hike up from Glencoul bothy and when that mist rolled in I was getting anxious for sure. Glad it happened when it did because the peat hags I just came through really was like Gollum guiding Frodo through the swamps in Lord of the Rings. That section would be hellish in the rain!

  • @tubbatravels
    @tubbatravels 12 дней назад

    Hi iain. Wonderful start to the episode, great weather and a good path. I remember the boathouse and that cool camp spot. I wish we had carried on and camped there as we had a torrid time camping further back past the second loch, which was our first loch coming the other way. We tried to camp by the beach where you took a dip but couldnt get the pegs in securely so went higher which had other problems. Stunning views on day two. Thanks for the mention. I think the perceived length of the track to or from glendhu depends on the weather and you had unrelenting heat like us which seems to add to the length. In my opinion glendhu is a better bothy to stay in than glencoul which you pass tomorrow. The guy with the ticks , well i found the path between glendhu and glencoul to be infested with ticks, so many landed on us but with long trousers and gaters we were ok. Captivating episode Iain bringing back so many wonderful memories.

      @@tubbatravels lol .it was a bit of a cockup..the road was not drivable in a section due to major potholes so no regular bus was running. However, a group chartered the bus wanting to go to the lighthouse so he put on a special run. However as you saw the big boat wasn't running so he could only take over 2 people at a time. I went first with the bus driver and started walking on the other side. Looks not a bad route that Ian. What would it be like going up the way? How did you get on with your pack? Been looking at the Arc Hail but with all the add ons it looking about £600 😮

    • @FlyingScot
      @FlyingScot Месяц назад

      Yeah I've used that pack twice now on the CWT. It's great. Mine is a the Arc Blast which has been superceded by the.Arc Haul Ultra.but it's only $399 over here for the 60L. I added the pocket on the front,$43,the water pouch, $30 and the chest pack, $75 so pretty expensive but all in around $550 which is around 400 UK pounds. I think you get hit with import duties? Its a real tough climb going up to Loch an Fada via that route and there are a couple of treacherous water crossings on extremely steep hill side where the path has been washed away. You will see that in the video.

    Hi Iain. You’re right the weather has turned. You met some characters on this stage didn’t you. The Polish Dad looked like Big Foot! 🤣🤣 The tough valley at the end reminded me very much of the path down Gasgale Gill in the Lake District. All the best mate, have a grea5 weekend. 😀🥾⛰🏕️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

    Hi Iain, wow, what a diversion that was, well well were the detour. Those waterfalls were absolutely beautiful. Bit disappointed we didn’t see any footage of you crossing that footbridge! 🤣🤣 All the best mate 😀🥾🏕️⛰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    • @FlyingScot
      @FlyingScot Месяц назад

      Yeah I was surprised how great that detour was. That bridge was sketchy but the annoying thing was that the farm had a fence all around it right next to the river and right up to the main suspension bridge that crosses it into their property so you couldn't get access to it and I had to cross the river!

    Hi Iain you appear to have the weather gods on your side this trip. Is this route tougher than the usual south to north path?

    • @FlyingScot
      @FlyingScot Месяц назад

      Yeah Steve the weather was awesome. So lucky with no midges either. Certainly tougher North to South for me. The climb up the 4x4 track from Glencoul bothy is really steep and the climb up as you will see later when I avoid going up the Glomach falls over to Morvich is brutal!

      Yeah I seem to have been so lucky with the days I picked. Just by pure luck I took a different track from the schoolhouse bothy to East Rhidorroch and then via the waterfalls as you saw were beautiful in the 2nd half of the video.

    Hi Hard long slog in the damp, must say I have a berghaus Paklite jacket 19 years old still ok and I screw it up in packs, another 3 layer but heavy winter jacket perfect after years, yet a recent one does get wet !
