I'll tell ya what, this show is the real deal! Shit it's just like being back in the barn. I retired last year after 28 years with the Milwaukee Fire Department. Found out about your podcast after I get a side job working at Conway Shields making front pieces for the brothers and sisters. My grandfather came on in 42, my dad in 68 , myself in 97 and brother in 2000. I got to ride the last Bulldog Mack's and wear the long coats. Never wore a plastic helmet my whole career. 5A or nothing!! We all that loved the job miss turning the corner and knowing we were going to get some work but we made it out safe and for that I'm grateful. Thanks for all the work you put into this, because it's a language and lifestyle few will ever understand understand. I always said... Layout or Lay up. Keep killing it boys.

Frank Ancona is my cousin and I've always been very proud of him from when he left for Paris isl. boot camp to graduation from the Fire academy. He's been my hero since I'm a little kid. We are 13 years apart so I've always looked up to him. Watching this podcast was great it reminded me of when were all together on Sunday dinner and I would listen to my uncles and older cousins talk about stories from work or hunting trips. It was great to hear Frank talk about his times on the job. I always wanted to be a fireman but I became a union electrician local 3. Love you cuz stay well and safe. And God bless all firefighters and first responders.

One of my old timer friends was in 231 engine during the war years and he told me that when the interchange was going on they would meet half way between firehouses and swap trucks and go back to their own firehouse

During the video, Frank Ancona was talking about accumulating "points" to be able to qualify for an interchange during the war years. Is that a predecessor to companies "taking a mark" that you hear to day? Or completely different. What is "taking a mark" in today's FD?

I happened to be riding along in Rescue 2 (Guest of Lee Ielpi) the night that L-132 dumped i believe was an old commercial washing machine with Sky Lab painted on the side, right in front of quarters, absolutely hilarious!!

Hi Randy, I plead guilty with an explanation. I was the junior man working that night, Our resident mad professor Paul S had gotten an old hot water heater. He stenciled it with NASA, Solar Batt Pack. Etc and took some soot from the rigs exhaust and made it look like re entry burns. We had the old Seagrave rearmount so we slid one of the ground ladders out of the rear a few feet and placed the piece of “Skylab” on it to transport it to R2 (they were in with E210). Me and Paul rode the rear step holding it on. When we got on Carlton Ave the rig was stopped for a second, we took the piece of “Skylab” put it in front of the apparatus door. Paul got on the rig and they took off around the corner. Me being the junior man with the youngest legs had to bang loudly on the door making it seem like “Skylab” had fallen out of the sky hitting the apparatus door then sprinting around the corner jumping on the rig for our getaway!!! As I was running I could hear the warning bell of the apparatus door going up.
